Anyone work in Japan and try to not drink at company events?

that's me. i drink a glass of chuhai, and the rest is oolong-tea. i eat lots, though.. and people tell me i get happier with oolong-tea more than people who are actually drinking alcohol! i was never forced to drink.. i was asked to hold a glass of beer for kampai, but nobody forces me.

it looks like the girl had too much fun and didn't know her limit. feel sorry for the parents.. RIP girl.

some people are saying she's trying to get a PR status because moving to the states is COOL? (oh PLEEEEASE!!!!).. geez. she wasn't even interested in marrying or even dating an american first.. it's only when the guy asked her out MANY times and after they got to know each other, she decided to be with HIM for him, not his nationality. some people here are judging her too much.

She must have some bad relationship with her own parents here in Japan

no she doesn't. what do YOU know to make a comment like that... her japanese family is supporting her and the baby ALL THE WAY. and respecting her decision to raise the baby in the country where his father grew up, and to live near the parents of the dead husband who had lost their son so that they can see their only grandson growing up.

and i do agree with Loki520 ... people in the south are really nice. cant say EVERYONE is nice and warm, but my impression is that people in those big cities like NY, LA and etc, they really don't care about foreigners.. it's not that they are not nice, but there are MANY MANY foreigners in those cities so people just dont care, while in the south, many people actually notice when there is a foreigner and they care and offer help. again, not everyone, but when i went to some of the states in the south, everyone was so nice.. very curious yes, but overall, my experience was positive. i would NOT assume this girl wouldn't be accepted with open arms. Good luck, Hotaru!

couple of people here mentioned her language ability.. wondering what makes you guys think that this girl doesn't speak much english? she was working on the U.S military base and spoke enough english to be hired and keep the job, and though i do not know what her occupation was, but i would imagine her english probably would be much better than many of the immigrants coming into the united states.

and regarding getting married over the phone... they did it as a procedure for her and the baby to get benefit while he was in iraq, and i wouldn't be surprised if they were going to have an actual wedding and the whole getting married thing AFTER he returned from Iraq... unfortunitely he didn't return as a living man, but i don't understand why some people here are making it sound like a joke.

anyways.. i hope all will go well with the girl and the baby.

getting married over the phone-- well, apparently some people on this thread don't know the background of the story and why this girl and the Marine guy who was killed Iraq had to do this. He tried to give her and the unborn child all the benefit the military could give them by getting married and they only found out she was pregnant after he left for Iraq.

How can you explain that to your teenager in how you married dad ? By phone ??? Wow !!!

she can certainly explain the whole thing to her son and can be proud, and she can tell the child that it was the father's love that made him decide to get married over the phone rather than waiting to return from Iraq.. Ever imagine being in the military and being deployed, far from your loved ones? He wanted to give every benefit she and the unborn would get by getting married.

Anyone think this couple WANTED to get married over the phone? Anyone think they would have wanted to be together and get married while holding hands and celebrate with hugs and kisses? They had a good reason of doing what they did.. so I don't understand why some people here are making this story like they just chose a quick-and-easy way to get married?

Making toddlers watch these videos probably won't help much, but if parents watch the videos together with the kids and they sing and dance together along with the Shimajiro tiger, then the kids would probably memorize the songs and phrases.

We speak Japanese and English at home but when we watch Dora the Explorer DVD with our toddler, we sit together and we count Uno Dos Tres together and dance, we shout AMIGO~ and have a good time... My toddler can count 1 to 10 in Spanish and can sing some simple Spanish children's songs she learned from other kids DVDs because WE sing together and have fun :)

So, yes, it all depends on how we use the language materials. The key is to learn together and have fun! Instead of studying the language, I'd say EXPOSE your kids with other language(s)... worked with me (grew up in a Japanese-French speaking house but my parents and I watched and danced Sesame Street and other English programs together and as a little girl, I remember shouting One Two Three! ):)

Sorry, I was referring to Cleo's post. But it wasn't meant to be offensive. So I better apologize in advance. I was just sayin

we should be free to express our opinions so i dont think you need to be sorry.. i was just curious because a woman who posted a comment right after whitneyrocks' unhappy comment.

and i know (from what i have been reading on JT) cleo is a woman with mature personality and has her own opinions while listening to others' opinions. she wouldn't be easily offended, right, cleo ? :))

and while i agree to a certain degree that some husband might not be as happy as their wives think they are... and i guess that's when communication becomes so important.

we can't just assume our spouse is happy, we have to keep communicating so that you KNOW your spouse is happy as much as you are.. and you need to let your spouse know when you are not happy because then you can work together to make things better..

as i said in my earlier post, a happy COUPLE makes a happy marriage.

And personally, I don’t believe in a marriage that only wife OR husband is happy.. WE have to be happy to make the marriage work, not just He or SHE. A happy couple makes a happy marriage. A happy wife and unhappy husband doesn't make a happy marriage and vice versa.

One guy says that he hasn't met a happy couple. Then a woman says that her husband is really happy, and then talks about thorns and occasional metaphorical blood-letting

which woman are you talking about? me? guess not.

If I get out of my second marriage, I`ll never marry again! MARRIAGE SUCKS!

Marriage with a wrong partner really sucks I'm sure.. but marriage with the right partner is wonderful I think.

At the same time, marriage is a constant work that never ends, and unless you're willing to enjoy the work and put yourself into the work, it won't work.. unless both wife and husband are willing to work for THEMselves..

I am yet to meet a happily married man. I am yet to meet a happily married Japanese girl too. That says it all really. Marriage is the accepted social prerequisite for kids.

meet me and my husband :) then you've met a happily married man and a j-girl :)

A great way to have a Japanese woman lose interest in you is to have dirty nails or "fukazume," nails that are cut way too short. I once polished my own nails as an experiment. Believe me, the ladies notice.

fukazume is bad, but i don't like it when men have long nails!!!!! keep it short and clean :)

I just can't see any advantage to married lifestyle

well, actually, there are lots of disadvantages and less freedom when you are married, especially when you have kids, you will have even less time purely for yourself. HOWEVER, I still love being married and being a mother to my children.

Might sound funny to you, but the happiness of the disadvantages is what's keeping me in where I am.

marriage isn't what it says on a piece of paper, it's inside of people..

I'd rather spend time with my special family at home doing not much than going out every weekend to meet attractive people ... in fact, my family is more attractive than any of those attractive people i might meet outside :)

Tax rate is 50% if the tax base is over 300,000,000yen. Up to 10,000,000yen tax base, the tax rate is 10%. Up to 30,000,000yen tax base, the tax rate is 15%.. etc etc.. It scared me when you said 50%, but my land isn't worth 300,000,000yen or even closer, so.. whew.. I'd still look for better ways, though.. The good thing is that there are still well over a decade before my kids are adults :)

There are better ways to structure inheritance for your kids

and ... if you know better ways, i would like your advice ;)

A gift that will be subject to a stiff inheritance tax (a socialist wealth transfer tax).

there will be still lots of left over money when/if they inherit... for the kids to get some portion of the money we spent is our profit.

but we are actually thinking that we will sell the land and then leave the money to the children. tax, yes, but still they'll get a good amount of money.

Buy an apartment in Japan only if you are prepared to live in it yourself for the next 30 years. Otherwise you will lose a lot of money or make close to nothing from your "investment."

i agree. well, there's a different between the way most japanese people think and westerners think when buying a house/property.. for most japanese, buying a house and property means they are to stay there for the rest of their lives, not many japanese buy a house/property thinking about profit.

i have a house right outside of tokyo and we're making monthly payment.. i wanted a house not for me to make profit but when my husband and i are gone, there's still the land so if our kids want to knock down the house and sell the land, whether the price of the land is more than what we paid or not, the children did not spend money to get the land in the first place, so it's a gift for the children when they are adults :)
