    miamum-

    I'm glad we agree :)

I find the safety stuff here is pretty rubbish. I don`t know about elsewhere to compare as I have only ever raised kids in Japan

I have to say, that child safety stuff is trushy outside of Japan, too (at least the places I've been to..).. but the thing is, child safety stuff is not a baby sitter.. it is there to support parents. parents shouldn't rely on those safety stuff too much. To educate your children, to be in the same room with children and watch them to make sure they're safe is the most important I think!

Japanese news said that this girl tried to look down to see if she could find her mother.. the mom should have taken the girl (and the baby) with her. Shouldn't be too much of work (a baby in one arm and the girl holding the mom's hand -- easy).

so let them play on the balcony should be an option

yes, agree. Letting toddlers play in the balcony IS an option and I think it is good AS LONG AS THEY ARE SUPERVISED THE WHOLE TIME they are out.

i sometimes bring a kiddy pool on the balcony in the summer and let my toddler play there because there's a roof to protect her skin from sunshine while if I put the pool in the backyard, there's no roof. but the rule is to be there and watch the whole time..

3-year-olds are SMART but NOT SMART if you know what i mean.. they are smarter that parents would think (they learn lots of things so quick .. like how to unlock the door and etc) but at the same time they do stupid things like climbing up somewhere high to look down without realizing their heads are heavy and etc).

I am glad this girl was okay.. I am sure the mom will be much more careful from now on !

in this case, the girl was already in the balcony. even if there was the secondary lock, in this case, it wouldn't have helped because the mother probably opened the door to let the girl be out on the balcony to play.

3-year-olds are often smart enough to quick learn how to unlock the secondary lock once they see their parents do it. the best thing is to TALK TALK and TALK MORE about safety and tell them over and over it is NOT okay to go to the balcony unless they are with mommy or daddy. My 3-year-old knows how to unlock the door, but she also knows she is not supposed to open the door/window herself. she always asks me or daddy to open when she wants to go out, and if we say no, she sometimes cries, but she does NOT try to open the door herself because she has been told many many times that it is dangerous.

Doubt the international porn websites would include Japan porn and Anime porn(much of which is now created/copied overseas) unless there was a demand for it.

i agree.. There was actually this American guy I used to work with and he was so openly into Japanese porn..

Why would he break the door down if it was not locked

break down, is just an expression in english. the guy did not literally break the door. i guess in japanese you could use the word 侵入する。

I will not donate nor donate from my child. By the same token I do not expect an organ to come my way.

can you be 100% sure and can say the same exact thing if your child is seriously ill and can survive if she/he gets organ donation? you think your child should just die because you don't want to accept donation? would you not think that your child probably wants to live and have his/her own family when he/she grows up?

you not wanting to donate is one thing, but i hope you have an open mind when/if it comes to your children (if you have any).

27-year-old barrista, who has been identified as Zentaro Shimizu, was asked by a male co-worker to stop attempting to proposition a 27-year-old female employee

first of all, the guy who was arrested was NOT a Starbucks employee. He was a regular customer. He said to some girl (employee) hey, kanojo! (hey girl!!), so the male employee said this place is not that kind of place.

Moderator: Yes, the original translation was wrong. It has been corrected. We apologize for the error.

I've actually had some conversations about organ donation with people in the office and some of my Japanese friends.

One thing that was quite interesting to me was that people who have children said that when their children are brain dead, as parents, it is probably extremely hard to make the decision to donate the children's organs, and even if they know the children will not speak or open their eyes again, they still don't want to stop the heart. As long as the kids' bodies are warm, they don't want to stop the heart -- so, VERY tough to decide to donate organs of their kids even if it means that some other children might survive.

However, most of them said that THEY want to donate their organs if they are brain dead. And some of them showed me the donor card that they carry in their wallets. I have mine, too. They said that they would like to donate their organs if it means someone else will live using their organs.

I am not sure how older generation think about this whole thing. My guess is the older they are, the more against they are about organ donation.

To be very very honest, I cannot be 100% confident if I can say yes IF one of my kids die (brain dead) and asked the question... Thinking about this makes my heart ache..

I don't want my parents to go through the pain IF I'm one day brain dead, and that is why I carry my donor card so that they know it is MY decision and not theirs.

Small kids cannot make the decision and so the decisions are all up to the parents/families. And because it is not their body, it is their beloved children's, the decision is tough even if they know it's a good thing..

I will talk to my children when they are 18 and so that they can make the decision to carry or not carry the donor card. Most people don't have to face the decision, but I think it is a very important topic for every family to discuss.. What-if..

Sorry my post is so long but I get so emotional when it comes to topics like this...

pretty doubtful the girl has any idea or understanding what happened

really??? 4-year-olds remember lots of things!! my 9-year-old remembers and talks about when he was younger.. what he did in daycare and grandparents. I myself remember lots of things about when I was that age, too. Not everything, but lots. Assuming 4-year-olds won't remember isn't cool and it certainly won't make this OK to do what the mother did.

and this girl might hear about what her mother did when she grows up -- imagine how she'd feel???

    completely agree, mimamum.

mothers do NOT sell their (our) little one's pictures to strangers no matter how poor we get. I'd rather be on the street and beg for money/food.

You mean 'former' model, correct? I know many women here look great well into their 40s but...what's she modeling (hopefully, not dentures, or a woman's hairpiece) and where's a good recent pic of HER?

she's still very pretty and looks great. she's really famous and still does modeling (magazines).

Did you have issues with getting both your names on the kid's passports?

nope!! actually, the people at the passport center offered to put both last names :) I didn't even know we could do that until they told me!

my husband is an American and he has taken the kids out of the country many times. the kids have Japanese passports and he has an American passport.

as i said before, my kids' Japanese passport have both my last name AND his last name.

he takes the kids to the United States on a regular basis to let them see their grand parents... Kids always use their Japanese passport and he uses his American passport (as that is the only passport he has). Never been a problem.

When they enter the U.S, he simply tells the immigration officer that the children belong to him (a U.S. citizen) and they have never given him any troubles.

Having said all I said, things might be more difficult when entering in another counteies other than the U.S, so I kind of understand what you are saying :) I'm just saying that we have never had problems with out 2 different last names and our kids having my last name in Japan... Everyone has different experiences and I respect your opinions and experiences.

I hope Japan will allow people to have the right to choose their last name rather than forcing them to pick one!! :))

Fishy, have you tried taking your kids out of the country on their own on a Japanese passport???

??? My kids always use their Japanese passports when they travel, and we travel every year. They are too young to travel on their own, so it is usually me, or my husband, or both of us are with the kids when travelling.

My kids' Japanese passport have 2 of their last names (my last name and husband's last name) so that we don't get questions when travelling. Well, we've only travelled with the kids to Hawaii and the mainland U.S, so I am not sure about other countries, but so far, travelling to the U.S with their Japanese passport has never been an issue.

They have my last name in Japan and have husband's last name in the U.S. By the way, just for your info, my maiden name isn't Japanese (it's french as my father is french)... and the only passport I have is a Japanese passport. Never been an issue.

i have a rare family name, would like to keep it. I however don't expect my future kids to have it as they would deal with a bunch of BS related to it

you can keep your last name after marriage. your kids can take your husband's last name. your husband doesn't have to use your last name at work. He can use his original last name if he is Japanese. no problem :)

Next "problem" to be solved will be: Kids shall carry father surname or mother surname?

it's not a problem. it is just something a couple would sit down and talk to before their child is born.

my kids use my last name in Japan and use my husband's last name in the U.S. their last name(s) never caused any problems.
