illsayit: it is true that there are countries where people do not have to wear seatbelts by law, but if you are driving or riding in a car in JAPAN where the law says you have to wear seatbelts, then I'd say everyone should obey the law.

and the last thing I want is for the kids to be "mediocre" in both languages and unable to truly fit into any one of the cultures.
I totally understand this.. that is my fear as well. Having 2 languages and 2 cultures is a precious gift that the parents from 2 countries can offer for the children.. We just need to figure out how..

Bootsy! haafu kids often don't have much problems becoming bilingual, but what I am more concerned about is the kids biliteracy.. A school that has a biliteral curriculum would be wonderful. I've heard of Nishimachi international school and I'd be very much interested in the biliteral curriculum they offer. My son already goes to a japanese elementary school but I'm thinking sending him to an international junior high to prepare for high school and university in the U.S might be a good thing to do as we might go back to America by then.. or might be better to finish japanese junior high and then send him to an international high school?... tough decisions to make.

I am not saying international schools affect negatively, and if the parents speak Japanese at home to the kids, they are very much likely to be fluent in Japanese.. but what I'm concerned about is that there are so many bilingual people while biliteral people are rather rare.. I mean, being able to write hiragana, katakana and easy kanji doesn't count here.. I mean, for a Japanese person to go to an international school and learn English while acquiring high level Japanese language isn't always easy. I know one Japanese family that sent their son to an international school and the boy is literally a native English speaker while his Japanese reading/writing isn't as good as other college grad Japanese people. He has problems understanding Japanese newspapers and stuff like that.. Our son (8 years old) is bilingual, he goes to a japanese elementary school and he is learning kanji and etc, but when it comes to English (reading and writing), his level is lower than average native English-speaking kids around his age. I thought about sending him to an international school but then I wanted him to learn Japanese as well (not just speaking)... and I am still trying to figure out what is best for him and the concern I had shown in my first post is actually our immediate concern regarding our kids education. I'd appreciate people's opinions and advice here :) Thanx everyone.

illsayit.. or the father might have just wanted to give the mommy some time to relax at home or do some shopping/get a hair cut or something because it's simply hard for a mom to have free time with a 4-year old.
just because this family didn't go out all together on this occasion does not mean they don't ever go out together as a family. I have 2 kids and sometimes I take my older child out while leaving the little one at home with daddy because there are things that older boy would enjoy and little ones don't. Fishing, is a good example. 4-year-olds can have lots of fun fishing and they can also be patient for quite a long time and enjoy hanging out with daddy.. a younger child, let's say 1 or 2-year olds would not. So, like kirakira25.. her 5-year-old daughter would enjoy being out with daddy fishing but her 3-year old son wouldn't have the patience to sit down on a boat and etc.. too dangerous.
I am assuming you don't have kids yet.. Once you have your own kids, it all makes sense I'm sure :)

among famous/rich people, it is becoming more like a "status" to send their kids to international schools here in japan.. and i always wonder if that'd cause any problems for those kids when it comes to aquiring japanese language to include writing, reading and comprehension. being japanese and not being able to use the language could cause big identity issues. it is good for the kids to be able to speak English but that is only true when the kids can handle their native language.
if the family is looking to relocate to an English speaking country, then sending kids to an international school would be a good preparation, but other than that, i personally think it'd be the parents' ego.
when it comes to choosing a "good" school, they need to see what's beyond their ego...

2 boys were out together.. maybe they had another child, possibly a baby at home... there's really no surprise the boys went out without mom.

i first thought they were playing shogi together, but it's actually that the man who was killed was playing shogi by himself outside of his house and the guy who killed him simply didn't like that.. i mean.. COME OOOONNNN!!!! what's the big deal someone playing shogi quietly outside of HIS house!! nobody's business.. I don't understand why he had to be killed :(

the baby wouldn't stop crying-- was that because the baby could sense the daddy's bad temper? if he didn't get angry and tried to calm the baby down, give him a bottle or go outside and walk around a bit, or drive around.. then maybe the baby would have had stopped crying i am sure. the father was just not patient and he can never be allowed to blame that on his baby.

1.2 meter railing on the balcony. Average Japanese 8-year-olds are somewhere between 120cm and 135cm or so.. My older son is 7 years old and he's 131cm tall. So we cannot say the railing wasn't high enough. The boy had to intentionally climb up. I hope people are not going to be stupid and blame on the school.

oops.. sorry, mistake.. the father didn't bring the guy, he CALLED THE POLICE STATION and told them he WANTED TO bring the 38-year-old man who was dating his daughter. I just read japanese article about the news..

the father actually visited a local police station hours before he killed the guy.. He even brought the 38-year-old guy with him to the police and said he wanted to talk to them about the relationship between his daughter and the guy!! This means that he actually went through the "appropriate" action to solve the problem... hmm.

I just heard that the father had actually consulted with the police hours before he killed the guy... I wonder what kind of "advice" was given to the father from the police..

he's stupid but the girl is also stupid. she went to the police to complain that another guy she was "dealing with" didn't pay the proper amount of money that they agreed upon, so she wanted the police to get him. when the police checked her cell phone mails, they found out about this self defense force guy who ALSO didn't pay the amount they initially agreed upon (60,000yen)... If only these 2 men paid what they had told the girl they would in the beginning, they wouldn't have been in this mess.. BUT I am personally glad they were caught. Stupid girl!!!
