yes, those classes are very common in every city, and when you go to maternity clinics, hospitals, they have those classes every month, and dads are encouraged to attend the classes as well. i also took some maternity yoga and swimming classes NOT because i wanted to do yoga or swimming, but because I wanted to meet other expecing mothers!

and it is an EXCELLENT idea to exchange contact information with other expecting parents in your area so that you can talk to each other when you are happy, when you are sad, when you need help, whenever you want to talk to an adult.

when some people do not want to socialize and stay home alone with a baby, they tend to get depressed more..

And I bet she never received any postpartum depression counseling before discarge, which is standard practice in most hospitals in the U.S.

i had my first baby in the U.S.. was discharged after 2 days and didn't get any of the standard practice.. i had no families around except for husband and he was really busy and wasn't around much..

i had my second baby in japan.. i was lucky to have neighbors who were willing to watch my older child when i needed to sleep while the baby was asleep.. some offered to do grocery shopping, too. i did not get counseling, but i did receive letters and etc from the city and they asked questions about how much sleep i was getting, how i was eating and my mood, how much help i was getting and etc..

i think the problem is that many people in japan or in the city do not have close relationship with their neighbors or other mothers in the community, it is so important to keep socializing even after just having a baby.. if this mother was just staying home with the baby and didn't have friends in the area, i wouldn't be surprised that she was depressed.. get to know people around you and keep contact with them, talk to them and etc.. that'd really help.. i know it helped me greatly.

    RIP little baby..

because I lost faith in my ability to raise him

first time mothers are usually NOT confident and that is totally normal.. this mother should have seeked help if she wasn't confident in her ability to raise the baby -- after only 12 days and making the final decision? that's crazy...

Not just her guilt she will also have to live with the possible blame from her husband and that can ruin the marriage and family

This is what came on my mind, too (and in fact, I mentioned this in one of my posts earlier)...

One of the worst words that a parent can hear during the morning rush is "Mama/Papa Unchi", because you know it will be a big delay and rush to get things done on time. This usually happens 2-3 minutes before leaving

Right... Poopoo in the morning is a nightmare (Grrrr...)... while I am all ready to go but just waiting for my little one to finish in the bathroom, I keep looking at the clock but she's taking her time, but I can't just pull her out of the bathroom because I don't want her to poopoo in the pants while driving... so, yeah, the morning can be crazy. One might say get up early and get ready, but I don't know why, kids poopoo comes when you are just about to get out of the door (ugh!!!!).

Anyways, like I said before, I DO understand how crazy the mornings with little kids can be... but still.. So sad.

nor does it actually state that the door swing open and the child fell out because she hadn't been secured

According to Sankei news, the girl was sitting in the car with her 2 siblings when the right side of the rear sliding door opened because it wasn't properly shut and she fell out of the car. The mother heard the sound of the sliding door open and stopped the car, stepped outside and found the girl on the ground by the rear tire.

I agree with you that it is such a work to get 3 kids ready for school/daycare and get out of the house on time, put them in a car (sometimes they don't want to and they fight).. it can be difficult depending on the kids' mood and etc (I know this because my morning is like that, too), and I do NOT think this was a crime at all but rather the mother was not careful enough and I feel so sorry for the mother and the rest of the family members. The mother will probably live with guilt for the rest of her life and she still has 2 other kids to raise.. It was a tragedy but if anyone asked me if this accident was avoidable, I would have to say yes. If the mother double checked that all the doors were properly shut, all children buckled up and etc...

I have small kids, and I understand that kids CAN get out of carseat or unfasten seatbelt, AND THAT IS WHY IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO MAKE SURE YOU USE CHILD PROOF LOCK ON THE DOOR. My toddler can reach the door even when she's sitting in the carsat, and she is too young to really undrestand what'd happen if she opened the door while car is moving, so I use child proof lock on the door so that she can touch the door and can try to open but cannot actually open.

i think what he meant was a baby seat (not booster seat) installed in the front seat..

and YES! kids in the back seat is my rule, too! my older one is old enough that he doesn't need a carseat/booster seat, but he still sits in the back seat with a seat belt on behind the driver's seat. that is just because it is supposed to be the safest seat.. if I knock off something and the car crashes, I'd be his wall while sitting in the passenger seat wouldn't help him being protected.

i wonder how many parents know what will happen to a kid in a booster seat sitting in the front when that airbag goes off... splat!

i think most parents/people can easily guess.. the problem is that most people think it won't happen to them..

This is just so sad... especially that this mother has 2 other children and the older one will always remember this considering her age (9years old), and I don't know if the father of these children will ever be able to look at this mother like the way he used to.. this can lead the whole family to break up and the mother will spend the rest of her life with guilt.. and it is just so so so sad...

I wish there were more and more police officers on the street stopping and checking in more cars to see if there are kids inside, if they are sitting in the carseats, if the parents are using child-proof locks on the doors...

I've seen really decent Japanese parents who don't take seat belts/carseats seriously... Nice people who love their kids but don't realize the importance of the seat belts/carseats.. News like this really need to be reported widely AGAIN AND AGAIN TO REMIND PEOPLE WHAT CAN HAPPEN AND THIS CAN HAPPEN TO ANYONE WHO DON'T TAKE SEATBELTS/CARSEATS SERIOUSLY...

Both of the above scenarios are far more likely than her driving over her daughter on purpose, which is what you seem to be suggesting she might have done.

no no, i wasn't suggesting that she did it on purpose.. i was just wondering why she couldn't have stopped...

according to the j-news, the door was not properly shut when the mother started up the car.. my question is, when the door opened and the girl fell out, why did the mother not stop immediately? this didn't happen while the mother was driving on the road, it happened when the mother was starting to drive and they were still in the front yard.. why didn't the mom stop???

on top of seatbelt, it is absolutely necessary to use the child-safety lock that is on the back door of every car in japan so that kids cannot open the door from inside.. even if the kids are buckled up, it'd be dangerous if they accidentally opened the door, so... seat belt, car seat and child-safety lock!!!!!

the mother must be sad and sorry, and guess what.. SHE SHOULD BE!!!

Little mention of what this "molestation" consisted of, BTW. A kiss is inappropriate in this country, but hardly qualifies as traumatic. ANY physical contact with someone else's child might be rated inappropriate in this situation.

According to Japanese news, the 4-year-old girl said that the guy touched her down there and her sister saw that, too.

I wonder how old the 4-year-old girl's older sister is... Grandma left the little girl with her older sister, and if the sister was a teenager, I'd think it'd be okay if it was really just for a short time (like a few minutes for grandma to get a couple of things quickly or go to the bathroom or something like that)..

There was a report the other day that these kind of things happen more than twice as much in Osaka/Kansai region compare to Tokyo/Kanto region.. and Shiga is in the Kansai region... I wonder why more Kansai girls (girls under elementary age) become victims while more teenagers/high-school-age girls become victims in Kanto region.

Anyways.. I personally hope the little girl's father would go really punch this guy and bury him in the cold sandy beach.. I have a little girl and although I'd take her everywhere (yes, bathroom, too) while being out, this sort of news makes me concern.. so many what ifs nowadays..

I don't necessarily take time to exercise just to exercise, but I run around with kids, throw/kick a ball, hold my 13kg princess and walk, run upstairs/downstairs with a laundry basket, etc... I don't see a point why I'd have to PAY or TAKE TIME for just exercising... I get plenty of daily exercise just to be around with kids and do my routine housework ;)

benjou I've always thought of as a man's word.otearai is rather posh and is also used in places like parks.kesshoshitsu I would expect to find in department stores, posh hotels, etc.

When I'm in a restaurant or store and need to ask where the bathroom/restroom is, I use the word otearai. I don't use the word toire to strangers as an adult. However, when my kids ask people where the bathroom is, they say toire wa doko desuka?. When I'm in a friend's house and need to use their bathroom, I'd say toire kashite, or toire wa doko?.

keshoshitsu.. I usually don't use the word in conversations. It sounds like a sign in the shopping center.

So, toire, to me, is more of a casual term while otearai is more of a polite term. And in my whole life, I have never used the word benjo .. I guess when I hear the word Benjo, it sounds like what Toilet sounds like to North Americans... Or/and like Cleo said, Benjo is more like boys/men's term.

In the song, she used the word toire because she referred the exact word her grandma used. Anyone noticed that the lyric is Kansai-ben (Kansai dialect) as that's the dialect her and her grandma used to communicate.

In an interview, she herself said that this was just about her childhood memory and didn't think she could sell this song... but one of the producers who saw the lyric loved it so much and he strongly recommended her to attach a song to the lyric.

My wife says that "Bathroom Goddess" would have been infinitely more accurate in terms of translating the feel and tone of the song

She probably said that because in the song there's a line that the grandma says *there is a really beautiful goddess in the bathroom/toire, and if you make sure to keep the bathroom clean all the time, you will be as beautiful as the goddess..

This song isn't about toilet/bathroom, it is about the singer and her grandma.. I don't like the title of the song and when I first heard the title, I thought the song would be a big joke, but after listening to it a couple of times on youtube and radio, I liked it so much because it made me think of my own grandma -- didn't make me think about toilet, though ;)

And by the way, toilet DOES mean toire in Australian English, doesn't it? When I was in Australia, people there always used the word toilet, not many used the word bathroom (only when they meant to take a shower, they used the word bathroom).

I had not seen my grandma for years, but after listening to the song and cried for a bit, I quick went online and got tickets to go see her :)))) I love my grandma and while she never taught me how to clean the toire, I used to clean her bedroom as a child and she gave me candy in return -- some of my fond memories with grandma :)

You can plug it in and can use it just like regular photo frame. If you use it without plugging it in, then you can use it just up to 3 hours.. So, I guess I would just keep it plugged in if I used this egg photo frame --- having said that, I probably wouldn't buy it as I like my square-shape one on my desk :)
