my wife said this morning when watching this live" Ew, they look like men"!

nevertheless they are supremely fit athletes, hockey players need wicked stamina.

NBC delayed it? are you for real? as they say in America: Get with the Program! Why not show it twice? with all the precious ads twice - tell the precious advertisers that it's 2 for 1 day, that'll keep them happy. Problem solved.

NBC = No Brains or Common sense

This fat issue is a time bomb ticking as nations get more and more obese and airlines seats remain relatively unchanged. I read that the seats on the new A380 superjumbo are 5cm wider that regular economy class seats. A small increase but better than nothing. I think the onus should be on the obese people to have a little humility about their own predicament and not make a stink about it - if you know you are not going to safely fit in one economy seat then you know you will need an extra seat or a business class seat or not fly at all. To get all indignant about it wont help. The large people should try renting a helicopter for a trip and have the pilot tell them they are are 135kg total: their luggage and bodyweight added. Sorry obese people - welcome to reality.

USNinJapan2 - couldnt agree more, the goose steeping was lame and out of place. The rest of the ceremony was definitely an "A".

ninjazilla - dont be so cynical.

Slick bit of P.R. for one lucky young lady to have her carrying the flag. Cant blame them for choosing her, but from a purely sporting perspective there were some very worthy world champions overlooked for the role.

I was surprised by NHK's footage. I assumed they would spend the entirety zooming on on the Japanese athletes forming up in the centre of the stadium but rarely did so we go to see the rest of the world's heroes too. (for once)

thats because most of it wasnt their feed most likely, it would have been a shared feed and all broadcasters would have had the same footage. That's why the commenatators were clueless to most of the sports stars last night.

yep, sure was a very impressive extravaganza superbly choreographed and executed, if anything it was a tad too long!

The NHK announcers though were on the other hand annoyingly inept and uninformed which was glaringly noticeable in the parade of nations. Australia come in: "Ah Ian Sorpu senshu!" come on is that the best they can do? he has retired and not present, can't they at least learn the name of one star in the Australian team? give me a break.

USA come in and it's, " Hansen no Kitajima rival!" yet no camera is zoomed in on Hansen, its zoomed in for about 10 secs on Tyson Gay, the sprinter at the heart of a much more widely anticipated showdown with Bolt and Powell it the Mens 100m sprint. Do the announcers comment? no, 10 secs of silence as none of them know who he is - come on! The US basketball team on screen....no mention. The 14 y.o British diver Tom Daley was on screen 3-4 times - obviously a new darling of the Olympics, but again not one of them knew.

NZ - "ah allru Bracksu!" ah they are not there at the Olympics guys.

Some well informed interesting commentary would have been nice, not the inane banter that was offered.

If she is an 18 y.o 3rd grader of high School, then all he had to do was keep it on the down low until she graduates in April and then he would have been good to go, BUT he had to act on his impulses now. Foolish.

The notorious Chinese fans are going to be almost unbearable vicariously supporting the Chinese athletes exclusively- more so than other places. I read recently that the authorities were trying to instill good sportsmanship behaviour into the fans, spending millions on lessons about sportsmanship, queuing and cheering! its true, was yesterdays paper.

Crowd behaviour is going to a real issue. Chairman Mao has lot to answer for. I hope the Chinese don't top the medal charts. I will be cheering for all the other countries. Hot favourites like Xiang Liu in the hurdles will not deliver (the Cuban guy will).

He said a few words in Kansai-ben to the tokyo-ites? oops buddy, after living here he should have remembered that the uber-cosmopolitan snobs of Tokyo hate Kansai and our dirty little dialect. Hulk is supposed to be much better than the first one, I am gonna check it out.

**Many Japanese consider mustaches and beards to be uncouth

we could write a tome listing all the quirky things Japanese people think or consider....I personally think the majority of Japanese men are just jealous as they can't grow a moustache or beard or sideburns to save their lives. Mr Nakamura's boss is probably a jealous smooth faced weeny. Many Japanese people I know are fascinated by the well formed and dense beard I sport, I get many favourable comments about it.
