DST is not only a failure at curbing working habits

screw working habits, take damn work out of the equation! how DST purely from the point of view of social habits; enjoying the evening light? Evening walks along the beach, touch rugby games, cricket practice, BBQ's, bike rides - I have many fond memories of DST in summer, life is not about working, who on their deathbed wish they had spent more time in the office? And if the standard working drone in Japan worked one hour longer each day as not to go home while it's light if DST were ever implemented here? then that is a truly pitiful thing.

then they should start and end work one hour earlier instead ...If you want to get up earlier or later, hey, get up earlier or later. It's not rocket surgery, people.

it doesn't work that way now does it? I for one cant change the time I go to work or finish work, I cant change everyone else's schedule can I? All my friends still have to work in their jobs, which start at the same time, my children go to school at the same time... there truly are some clueless things posted on this website

Japan is arguably in the wrong time zone to start with compounded with the lack of daylight savings means you get idiotic things like Sunrise and sunset today in Sapporo. Sunrise at 4:05 a.m.
    Sunset at 7:15 p.m.

hey lets check Boston which is a the same latitude as Sapporo.

    Sunrise at 5:17 a.m.
    Sunset at 8:22 p.m.

well well thats a better scenario.

How about Florence, again about the same lat. Sunrise at 5:43 a.m.
    Sunset at 8:57 p.m.

It doesn't take Spock to see the logic of DST.

It is one of the frustrating things about living in this country - the lack of DST and also the lack of awareness among the population about it benefits. How about the energy savings from using lights one hour less each day in your house? the safety issue of children being able get home in the safety of daylight? I wish I could have one more hour to play with my sons at the park in summer evenings after work..

the old brake gas pedal mix-up yet again happens an awful lot in Japan, too many automatic cars with "steering wheel attendants", drivers driving manual/stick shift transmissions dont do that....reactions of a sloth meant he couldnt reverse the procedure either. Nice one gramps.

Overwork was not the sole reason that killed him: Poor diet, lack of exercise, excessive drinking and smoking were probably contributing factors.

absolutely brother, the stress of his job was the straw, but the camel was probably a dodgy camel to start with.

80 hours a month O/T thats only 20 hours a week, not "that" extreme. 160 hours of O/T a month is getting extreme.

I once worked 70-80 hours a week (6 days) thats 30-40 hours of O/T per week for 2 months straight doing manual outdoor work, didn't kill me, in fact it lined my pockets extremely well as I got paid for every second I worked, I had some monster pay checks - 40 hours at regular rate and 40 hours at time and a half. The problem in Japan is that these workers are not getting sweet O/T rates for all the extra work, they are mostly taking one for the team and that is not on. If all workers in Japan doing O/T got paid fully for their efforts or were compensated accordingly if they were on set salaries then I guarantee few would be complaining about it and bosses would be at the door booting employees out at the end of the day to avoid paying overtime. Also slow inefficient work practices are causing people to work long hours, ask any foreigner stuck in the frustrating hamster wheel in a Japanese office - work smarter not longer.

I saw this on another site and it seems almost all news organizations have this wron (thanks to AP), it was a "Front end loader" not a "bulldozer" - they are very different machines. I have licences to operate both back home so can assure you they are quite different. A front end loader has wheels and can move a lot faster than a bulldozer and is quite a lot more manoeuvrable, hence this Palestinian chap caused the amount of carnage that he did. Had he been in a bulldozer more people would have time to get out of his way.

...getting back to the brouhaha about the word "English" in the title. TBH the whole headline stinks! It makes it sound like there was a person named "Hack" who is classified as a "graffiti" - like a terrorist or something and he caused the train to stop.

English graffiti 'Hack' grounds bullet train

Also "Ground" is for airplanes and ships, who ever heard of a train being grounded?

How about a simple yet accurate, informative and non provocative headline such as "Shinkansen cancelled due to vandalism" ????

Poor headlines to go with incorrect choice of Lexis in numerous other articles. Come on JT pull your socks up!

If no death penalty then the "substitute death penalty" should be "hard time" not the hotel conditions of prisons in the western world but a prison with no TV, no internet , no pornography (some countries like Sweden and the US allow it (magazines) even for sex offenders), no luxuries just give them spartan living conditions and spartan food and let them reflect on their deeds wallowing in their own misery with no hope for parole. Make them grow their own vegetables etc to offset the drain on taxpayers money, spend as little money as feasibly possibly on these creatures as it's a travesty when 40% of schools just got labelled as major earthquake hazards and hospitals are under funded.

Decent, law-abiding people do not deserve to die with the blood of others on their hands.

Who has blood? the person executing the death warrant or all of society? I am sure the vast majority of law abiding citizens don't feel they have blood on their hands..... Ok how about this then, put the death row inmates alone in room with a sharp knife, a cyanide tablet, and a rope and stool and tell them to take their pick...

very sick? yeah he was very sick - evil sick, but the man was not insane, he knew what he was doing, he enjoyed it and never showed remorse. He had a Dissociative identity disorder - think Gollum/Smeagol from Lord of the Rings. Both Gollum and Miyazaki knew exactly what the were doing and thats why the judge never bought into Miyazaki insanity plea.

Tokyo will win, if they can galvanize the people and local Govt fully behind the idea, that was tokyo's major weak point in round one, they kicked butt in most other aspects of the proposal except that one.

Monday that the weapon used was a dagger knife, rather than a survival knife as they had said the previous day

indeed it was, I noticed that when I saw it lying on the ground in the news footage, there is a big difference. Daggers are symmetrical and doubled edged- the perfect stabbing weapon. Survival knives are what John Rambo used and aren't that great for stabbing, they are cutting and slashing weapons. He wouldnt have inflicted so much carnage in such a short time with out the lethal dagger in his hands - this bolsters the case that he knew exactly what he was doing. Mamoru Takuma at the Ikeda School used a Kitchen knife, had he been using a dagger too he would have slaughtered many more innocent kids that he did.
