The train was not a "runaway" train, it had a "driver" the whole time.

the conductor was locked out of the control cabin and trapped in a passenger compartment of the running train while he was taking care of a drunk passenger sleeping on a seat. When the train stopped at Higashi-Nakagami Station, he manually opened the train doors and slid out of the carriage. The doors were apparently closed again before anyone else could get off or on. The conductor hurried back to the control cabin to open the doors anew for the passengers; however, before he could get back in, the driver departed thinking that the passengers had already got off the train as the monitor indicated the door operation records as normal. Some 10 people failed to get off at Higashi-Nakagami Station, while about 40 people saw off the train leaving without them. The driver noticed the absence of his colleague when the doors remained closed after arriving at Nishi-Tachikawa Station. He then waited for about nine minutes for the conductor to catch up.

more to this story, the snippet posted on JT leaves out the details. Seems the train driver is the one who needs a rocket for not checking or even looking.

Purpose made Pajamas are the most pointless clothing ever. T-shirt and Boxer shorts: voila - sleepware. Must be buying that for his wife, or perhaps he has a fetish?

that "stuff" is a travesty of the word "beer". It's for alcoholics who drink everyday and can't afford real thing everyday. Tune - its made by Suntory (says so on the label in the photo)

What a waste of good eclipse, shame the eclipse path couldnt have been over Europe or North America - where people would have appreciated it a whole lot more.

"He donates blood" .... more like "a dog is held down while blood was forcibly withdrawn from it's body"

Medical complications of dogs? how about dealing with the the disgraceful medical system for humans first before worrying about Japans aging dog population. Talk about about a topsy turvy world with bizarre priorities.

NZ firearms licenses are issued for 10 years - this system started in 1992/3 - and was implemented alphabetically - so Sime being a gun owner and gun club member would have got his about 1994-ish so his renewal would have been 2004 - so 5 years ago, when he was probably not so depressed and probably quite a decent bloke. As being permitted to "carry guns" - only cops are permitted to carry guns on their person and not as standard (and the only people to have pistols at all). Firearms must be stored in your house in locked cabinets with the ammo separate from the weapon - if you go hunting you have to store it out of sight in your vehicle with unloaded - loaded you are screwed if you get caught. Farmers have to be careful that as they often carry a rifle for vermin control in the farm truck and forget when the come into town.

Apart from issuing licenses every year I don't see what can be done other than the family stepping up to the plate, which they failed to do in this case..."had told family earlier Sunday that he had depression" one call the the cops and they could have investigated and if they deemed him to be a hazard they could have confiscated his weapons.

funny colour? no, not at all - that is a very normal colour for a 'snow fed' river, which this river must be - Toyama has lots of big mountains and snow.

    timorborder do you have children???

We don't know all the details of the accident - all the circumstances. Unless we are fully in possession of the facts we cant go off half cocked lot a large majority of JT "high horse" posters seemingly love to do. The man said he was completely unaware and he probably was, the kid was probably supposed to be inside and snuck out. The mother could have been in the toilet or cooking and thought the child was in her playpen - you can not keep your eye an a child 100% of the time - that's why you secure them in inescapable places like play pens. Little Maki could have escaped and it only takes a second. On the other hand Perhaps her mother was an inattentive keitai mum who just wasnt looking nor paying enough attention and the kid easily got outside to her doom.

What if the father had backed over the neighbours kid who sprang out of nowhere when he was backing out? The poor bloke is in a 'catch 22' and royally screwed in any case.

Life is cruel, you take as many precautions as you can but sometimes shit happens.
