@Altria- The last I heard the police in Japan were saying they had no evidence, no proof of drugs, no suspects, etc., etc., etc. There seem to be a lot of excuses coming from that quarter and no real police work appears to be accomplished every time another of these reports come in. Honestly I don't believe anything will be done about this problem so I honestly think we should all just boycott Roppongi until this problem is resolved.

It's not the military's responsibility to police Japan, only to defend it. Also, anyone in a foreign country whether expat or traveler should realize that you have to take responsibility for your own safety. I myself have been heeding this warning since it was first issued and confined my drinking to friendlier spots. It's an unfortunate fact of life that it is up to each individual to use their own common sense and heed warnings issued by their embassies. Why take a chance on being a victim or wait for the police to do something to clean this area up? Let your money do your talking for you and stay away.

I can't believe no one listened the first time they issued this statement. Am I the only American who pays attention in foreign countries? It's a good thing these idiots at least have the sense to travel to a safe country like Japan, I'd hate to see them in some of the other parts of Asia I've been to.

How can one be hospitalized for an overreaction in Japan when hospitals here even turn away women in labor? I'm a little curious about that, but luckily have never been in a position to find out personally as I have yet to go to a hospital here.
I'm not surprised that he kept quiet, most children in these situations do, and most Japanese are loathe to complain about anything.

Who outside of the tourism industry really cares? Personally I avoid the big tourist spots like the plague.

Are there are a lot of vacationing Russian teens where you are? I live just outside of Tokyo, and the only Russians I see are females, and not teen aged.

The fact that the boy was hospitalized for his burns certainly implies it was a little more serious than your standard boys will be boys behavior.

That's one tough kid, to take that kind of treatment and not even complain afterward. I hear about these kinds of "games" at boy's boarding schools and always wonder why they put up with it, it doesn't seem worth it. I'm a little shocked to hear about this happening at an ordinary school, though! I guess complaining to mom isn't really an option for them if they want to keep their friends, though. Sad situation. I wish someone had told him that being tough in front of your friends isn't the only way to prove his masculinity. I don't think second and third degree burns are very fun, and the scars that result aren't really that harmless. It probably hurt like hell. Like I said, tough kid.

Most bottled water in the U.S is just tap water, there's no legal requirement to tell you where the water is from or how/if it was treated at all. Funny enough, some of them do have an ingredients list, though.
My one biggest issue with bottled water is the sheer waste of plastic, which takes generations to decompose, if it does decompose at all.
It's easier, cheaper and more environmentally friendly to just carry a thermos around with you, a lot of them even come with straps so you can just put it on like a purse or backpack. I have a super kawaii bottle that's light pink I found in the states, it goes everywhere I go. Considering the lack of trash cans, it helps a lot. Kudos to this Australian town for taking a stand against these abusive corporations, it's ridiculous when we let companies get away with this kind of nonsense. Why let them steal your water and sell it back to you for a profit?

No matter what the kids were or weren't doing, it's still the driver's responsibility, legally and morally. I dodge bicyclists every day when I drive here, but I pay attention. You have to realize that you're driving a machine that weighs a few tons and act like it, which means paying attention and avoiding obstacles like bicyclists and pedestrians. If you can't do that, you shouldn't drive. The children's behavior is irrelevant, case closed. If you think the rules of the road are harsh or unfair, don't drive. It's not as though Japan doesn't have a public transport you can use.

Is this a bad joke? Considering our successes with human cloning, I'm certainly glad they aren't using this "sperm" for anything other than research. I'd hate to be the mother of whatever resulted from this stuff.

Hold on a mo' there, these people CLAIMED their son abused them. We don't know what really happened here until after an investigation. Nobody deserves to be killed, in my opinion. What I wish would happen is for Japan to build up adequate social services for people being abused, so that they don't have to commit crimes just to defend themselves. No one should have had to die here, and it's a very sad and very preventable situation.

I once heard or read that the most dangerous place to be in Japan was a Japanese home, and that most crimes are committed in the family here. Sadly, that's true in this case.

Were they the only ones quarantined? Since it was the Japanese tutors who had the flu, it would have been sensible to quarantine everyone THEY were in contact with, and not just these students. I'm also curious as to where these J-tutors caught the flu................. if you live in Kyoto, beware patient X, they may very well be Japanese!

Even if McNair was an adulterous jerk, he still deserved better than to get murdered that way.

Generally, in most countries I've been in the lax hygiene has been noticeable. Here in Japan, I regularly see women going to the restroom and not bothering to wash their hands after wards (yet they take the time to fix their makeup). In the U.S I would see women who TALK on their cells in the toilet, yet can't even be bothered to rinse their hands after, let alone give them a good scrub. So, I don't really think the hygiene issue is a cultural one, but more of a global shame. Why don't we all just decide from here on to start making hand washing a priority? At LEAST after we use the restroom, that is.

OssanAmerica- Yes, we choose which assets to place in Japan much as your landlord would "choose" to fix your leaky plumbing, because we have to. We don't have a choice to leave this country, please. If your most current military experience is via your friends who were in Okinawa during Vietnam, I can certainly understand your confusion over our current relationship with SK. Japan played a huge role in past wars, but what does that have to do with the present? Not much.
