frontandcentre's past comments

Pukey2 - part of the comments about them looking like boys was a read-between-the-lines implication that they have been carrying on the long tradition of Chinese doping (remember all the running records fuelled by "special mushrooms"? ). Communist countries seem to be defined by it when it comes to Olympic competition - as well as those with the greatest financial incentives (which is why so many of the top American sprinters of the past 10 years are now disgraced)

Anyway, who knows - the Chinese deserved to win based on skill. Just the Japanese were much more lovely to watch, and the crowd were too boisterous.

rjd jr - I'm afraid I'm one of those people. He's entitled to a celebration, and he is doubtless one of he best swimmers ever (especially since Thorpe gave him the chance by retiring) but he sounds like an arrogant thug to me. I'd respect him a lot more if he kept quiet and had a more dignified celebration.

It's a pity that some people will see this, and instead of celebrating his undoubted brilliance as a swimmer, will see him as just another offensive, noisy American fool

Far better to lie about a private matter than to lie in order to illegally invade other countries leading directly to the deaths tens or hundreds of thousands of people - which is what Bush did.

This criticism is coming from the same type of closet gay Republicans who oppose homosexuality in public on grounds of deluded Christian 'morality'. I guess that's what you call "Loving the sinner, but hating the sin..."

When Ogura and Shiota were playing (and got defeated), the crowd didn't know how to behave. They were shouting and yelling throughout the points, which may well have distracted both pairs, not just the Japanese. Some parts (not all) of the Chinese crowd should learn how to behave. Shouting and screaming between points is fine, but for goodness' sake - let the players concentrate when in play!

The Japanese were very graceful, but the Chinese pair they were playing both looked like boys, though. Ugh

Does the U.S. need bases in Japan? Oh yes - so that it can continue to kid itself that it is a regional power in Asia, when it plainly isn't. It suits the Japanese just fine to have their defence bills paid by the gullible US taxpayer, as well.

USAPatriot - I'm not sure McCain's very likely to be in a position to do anything about China, except as a private citizen. As for your macho-man stuff about bombing people back to the "stone age" - I seem to remember that phrase being used once before - in a war that you lost, against a country which is still a communist one.

nanda, unless they pay the drone pilot who fired the missile, I guess it's not likely to change hands.

While I welcome success in fighting armed ciminals, the best way to fight fundamentalism is actually not with missile and bullets, but to make the alternatives look much more attractive to those AQ would otherwise recruit. AQ is shooting itself in both feet by killing so many other muslims in Iraq, and its power is dwindling there, thanks mainly to the unity of the opposition to these killers.

I hope young people in Pakistan and Afghanistan come to realise what a pointless struggle it is to fight for a fundamentalism when the path to happiness is education, work and self-enrichment. It'll take time and a much more enlightened foreign policy from the US and the west, but maybe it can be achieved.

Looks like Arnie will go the same way as Gray Davis without the "help" of Enron and Dubya lying to support his position. Davis, you may remember, got clobbered for cutting the State budget because Bush's crooked friends forced California to buy electricity at premium rates. I wonder how forgiving California's voters will be of Arnie's cuts...

The problem with taxis isn't too much regulation, it's not enough! A sensible limit to their numbers and setting an exam which requires demonstration of proper geographical knowledge of where they are picking up fares would be a great start. Then instead of numerous oyaji taxi drivers with a poor knowledge of Tokyo earning 3 mill a year, you'll have a smaller number of good, knowledgeable drivers earning a considerably better salary. The other advantage would be less taxis sitting idling for hours, pumping out loads of CO2...

Ha ha - quite right Altria. It's dead expensive when you live in the expat lebensraum of Hiroo or Azabu and you can only get 100 sq.m for JPY 1 million a month in rent. And even Filipina maids to look after Junior are SOOOO much more expensive here... (rolls eyes) These rich expats are, in some cases, simply living on another planet - and arguably not in real Japan at all.

Tokyo is way cheaper than living in London, and in terms of crime the quality of life is definitely higher. You could offer to pay me 10 times as much as my current decent living and there's still no way I'd move to Moscow. Not a chance

Good. But... since all it needed was the cooperation of the Serbian authorities, perhaps someone might ask them why they have effectively been protecting him for 13 years... In the end, you feel they've done this because the benefits of doing so have finally outweighed the nationalist sentiment of those who think brutally murdering 7,500 people just because of their non-Serbian ethnicity is somehow OK.

I hope Karadzic rots in jail forever - and Mladic knows that he's next. A step forward for civilisation, I think

USARonin - I bet you're looking forward to whichever of the candidates gets elected. Perhaps you'll get a proper war hero this time, rather than a deserter, or your first black president, of whom you should be proud. I feel sorry for the next man - he has an enormous mess to sort out that Dubya has left you great nation in. Trying to argue that somehow Clinton's presidency was comparable is simply ridiculous. The 1990s look like halcyon days for almost everyone at the moment. Dubya is a total and ignominious failure and Nancy Pelosi, whatever her own failings, is exactly right. Much of world opinion will agree. The best that you can do is move on and get on with restoring America's standing in the world.

BTW, calling Democrats "socialists" is hilarious. Keep up the comments, they are making me smile...

    Gyudon,

Try a test - try breathing pure CO2 and see how long you last.

You really are coming up with silly arguments that discredit rational scepticism. Rational scepticism of the consensus is a very good thing, because it makes climatologists work harder to justify their theories with experimental observations and facts.

No credible sceptic would argue against global warming by simplistically stating that "last winter was very cold", just as stating that the considerable increase in the average global temperature over the past couple of decades is - on its own - irrefutable evidence of man-made global warming. It's a much more complex theory than that, and clearly beyond the comprehension of too many people.

Anyway, that's my last word on this subject. Like the polar ice caps in summer, increasingly the minority of people who no longer believe the proven facts are rapidly melting away.

    Gyudon:

Notice that Taka313 & other libs get on their high horse and ride away as quickly as they can once people actually challenge their absurd assertions?

No, I think that they give up when people like you choose to ignore the large majority of mainstream scientific opinion. The suggestion that human activity is having an impact on the composition of the atmosphere has essentially been proven by science.

And why, please tell me, should only 'libs' believe ? Global warming is NOT a matter of political opinion, it's a matter of scientific fact.

The website you cite is the personal opinion of a Fox News columnist, i.e. the only type of person stupid enough to dispute the findings of a very large number of reputable scientists.

You are most entitled to believe ultra right wing agents provocateurs - I'll stick with the experts who actually know what they are talking about, not the flat-earthers or creationists.
