Fair dinkum - yes, or the demographic alternative is killing off more older people before they become dependent on taxpayers to support them. That's the Japanese point of view, as the alternative is letting lots of nasty foreigners into the country to supplement the shrinking pool of new workers, and they seem totally unprepared to do that on any large scale basis

Cleo - much of what you say I agree with, however a childlessness tax might be adding insult to injury to those who simply cannot have children. Much better to incentivise families by tax breaks and a support system for families to encourage women not to work - and also to give fathers time at home. The lifestyle of most couples is what prevents them from having children. Far too long work hours for too little pay for most people makes children an unappealing prospect, even for those who would otherwise have them

If Mugabe had even an ounce of decency in his body, he would resign and give his country the opportunity to start to re-build after the disaster that has been his recent tenure in Zimbabwe. Unfortunately he hasn't - he is a crazy old man determined to cling on to his position at any cost. One does wonder what the remaining attraction is to be the top man in charge of a country that you've personally ruined and the vast majority of whose people would be dancing for joy if you died, but I suppose he feels he has no alternative but to finish the job. Yes, his legacy in the history books will be that he took one of the most prosperous countries in Africa, at a time when prices for its main exports were starting to rise, and single-handedly turned it into an economic basket case, even by modern African standards. He will be regarded FOREVER not as a hero of the independence movement - as he wishes to be - but as someone who inflicted far, far more suffering and impoverishment on his own country than any colonial power ever did

Hey Sarge,
You know what? You're most welcome, and free, to express your opinions on the matter right here. Just as non-Americans are entitled to have an opinion on just exactly how big a failure Bush has been.
Not that I expect you to have informed opinions, but anyway.
Personally, Brown is probably screwed after this, but he ain't going to resign, he will simply blunder on, exhausting his apologists still further

What, this guy likes the type who abuses and murders an innocent young woman and buries her in a sand filled bath? Nice. Perfect for a bit of exciting gay sex, huh?
I hope that they catch this twisted scum bag very soon. He seems to have one of those faces - because I have seen a lot of guys who have a passing resemblance to him, that's for sure

Well, how VERY understanding of you. This person was clearly in a severely distressed state and needs urgent help. Have you never heard of Post Natal Depression? It can, and sadly does, lead to awful tragedies such as these. Please think before you are so swift to thoughtlessly and heartlessly condemn people

redacted, you do have a very odd way of looking at the world.

redacted - what does "Alpine Cretinism" have to do with this case, as zaichik rightly pointed out? The answer is absolutely nothing - you are simply trying to smear Europeans. Look at the recent disgusting behaviour in Texas before you start criticising other countries, let alone whole continents...

redacted - presumably you haven't seen "Deliverance"...
Unfortunately for the victims, this man appears to have been very much in control of himself and his actions, not mentally deficient in any way. I just hope that all the children can re-adjust. Natasha K should give them hope from that point of view

The apologists for absolutely anything that Israel says or does have been spouting their bile and lies here for far too long. What a pity - the effect is that anyone who tries to take a balanced and progressive view to trying to find a peaceful solution, such as Jimmy Carter, is castigated as a friend of terrorists or an anti-semite. No progress is possible when too many people hold such irrational and unreasonable views.
The trouble is, reading some of the above, I think there are many right wingers leading comfortable lives thousands of miles away from Israel and Palestine who'd be very happy if this brutal conflict keeps rolling on. Why? Because they haven't a scrap of humanity between them, and are basically pleased to see Muslims - even women and children - being killed on a daily basis. They won't admit that, but effectively that's what they support and it is no better or worse than wishing Israelis dead. Both viewpoints are DISGUSTING

Zaphod, Hitler's boring meisterwerk might appeal to fascists in any part of the world, but it would be interesting to see your sales figures for the Arabic version of Mein Kampf, because I have a feeling that you are simply making that up...
I am totally in favour of such rubbish being published, simply so that people can remind themselves of the consequences that misdirected hatred directed against one religion or group of people can lead to.

redacted - quit with all the hatred against Palestinians, will you. You'd be the first to complain if somebody invaded your country, murdered innocent people, removed any vestige of security and stole all of your property. Sounds a bit like the USA in Iraq, actually, never mind Israel and Palestine.

Sorry to ruin your fun, but I never heard of an ice age being heralded by de-glaciation and the rapid disappearance of sea ice in the Arctic. Both are undeniable facts, recorded over decades of study, and both processes are accelerating. As Phil Chapman himself accepts in that article, it may be thousands of years before the next ice age commences. In the meantime - it looks like we are more likely to fry

jambon - not sure why you think that anyone, regardless of their politics, should WANT global warming. It should surely be a matter which transcends politics. The reverse question would be why do some members the (religious) Right want to ignore an overwhelming scientific consensus? Oh yes, these are the same people who think an old guy sitting on a cloud created the whole universe in a week.
Very credible

skipthesong - please do as your name implies... you are sounding like a cracked record. Especially the worn-out, old "anti-semite" label attached to anyone who utters even the slightest criticism of Israel. Israelis have a right to self-defence. There - I said it. Hamas should not be randomly firing rockets anywhere, or allowing them to be fired. However, you are living in fantasy land if you think this can be solved without either involving Hamas in some degree of negotiations, unless your only solution is to kill all of the Palestinians, simply wipe them out. Funnily enough you never have time to concern yourself with the majority of people who are being killed or maimed - innocent Palestinians.
