...presumably Virgin could only do this by code sharing with ANA, because as Virgin are UK-based they couldn't get a slot for one of their own flights?

WilliB - it's impossible at this stage to say what the cause was. Even when exposed to extreme turbulence, aircraft simply don't break up when they are properly maintained. I suspect it will turn out to be a combination of factors, probably leading to a critical loss of engine power.

Tragic, but not an unexpected outcome. I hope that they can get some submersibles on the scene quickly and recover those flight recorders.

Lightning might have been part of it, but by no means the sole reason. I have been on planes struck by lightning twice and although it isn't much fun, the air crew immediately reassure you that there is nothing to be worried about.
What I would ask our resident aviation experts - and there seem to be a few people who genuinely know what they are talking about on these boards - is could it have been bad turbulence? I always understood that crashes as a result of wind shear only occur close to the ground or near mountains? I have never heard of a flight at cruising altitude simply falling out of the sky - only the Swissair crash out of New York sounds at all similar to this...
Thoughts...?

The best way to avoid hassle is to go arm in arm with a woman (or two) I've found, then these guys never hassle you. The other approach is to claim that you are gay - some of them are a bit "traditional" about that

teleprompter - while I'm sure the basic details are correct, how much credibility should we give to a right-wing military blogger who uses such sophisticated phrases as "uninformed ass clown" in his posts?
Not much, as far as I'm concerned. The end result is what matters, and your President is not trying to take credit for this

I suppose it was "inappropriate" because just like the Fuji presenter who implied that Sumo is sometimes fixed (which anyone with a knowledge of Japanese culture and a basic understanding of statistics would conclude that it is) he was verging into a controversial area. Frankly, it's a good idea - a bit like when the U.S. bought Alaska from Russia. Reason for the controversy? It would be like admitting defeat on a matter of principle. Nationalists don't want that - and could Japanese diplomats ever negotiate a face-saving deal, even if Russia was interested? Probably not

prevention is better than cure - I heard about one case (less publicised) in which a merchant ship was carrying armed guards and when an approaching pirate boat refused to heed clear warnings, a sniper shot one of the pirates in the head. They turned around pretty quickly after that...
As for the locals in Eyl and other pirate bases, tough luck if there are reprisals I suppose. Anyone running a clothes shop there will have done very well out of ill-gotten gains made by the "Somali Coast Guard". Too bad.
I have said all along - what they should do is simply let it be known that unless piracy ceases immediately (including the release of all current ships held hostage), all the nice big houses and fancy cars in Northern Somalia are going up in smoke. In such case, I think common sense may prevail

Yet another storm in a teacup. If the guy had been caught coming out of a soapland or sex club, the reaction would have been non-existent. Even beating up your employees seems to be OK compared to the dreaded "D" word. Smoke a bit of harmless weed to relax, however...
Anyway, a 31-year-old man is his own responsibility, not his Father's any more. Ludicrous.

Well, I have some sympathy for him because it's clear that there are massive double standards involved here. I'm not saying he shouldn't have been punished - I'm saying that there are a hell of a lot of other people and companies that should have been punished for much greater corporate misdeeds.

He should have been rather more specific - the system here crucifies those rich and famous who refuse to play by the "rules" of 'normal' corporate malfeasance in Japan. He didn't buy off the right politicians and civil servants. Game over

Sorry, but how can you say that this is a case of sexual harassment? I'd say it's the reverse, if anything. There is NO evidence that it was because "Claire" was a woman that her boss refused to acknowledge her - he could have been xenophobic, ignorant or an idiot. Or perhaps he simply felt she wasn't needed - she may have been appointed to his section against his wishes or by a rival in the company. And the consequences were plain to see - she left. But "sekku-hara"? I don't think so.
There's a real danger of people taking articles like this seriously and treating any trivial reason for a person feeling upset with their treatment at work and using it as an excuse to claim sexual harassment, when in actual fact it is far from it. Everyone deserves respect and proper treatment at work, but people shouldn't have to tread on eggshells either. A dose of reality is what a lot of American rights activists need...

smith - it was actually a conductor on the train (presumably the guy opening the doors and sounding the alarm on the platform) as he got assaulted twice at two different stations.
Sounds like the station staff were in their office eating donuts or something
