    Completely bananas!

Saying to her "Sorry - I'm married" might have worked rather better

"The fact remains that if this financial crisis had waited another month, it would be a McCain-Palin landslide."

Nice one Sarge! Not a 'fact' in the slightest. Since I remember comments from you previously that you'd almost prefer Obama to McCain because the old airman wasn't conservative enough for you, perhaps you've been swayed by his return to republican credentials - i.e. dealing in smears, lies, insinuations and attacking the opposing candidate rather than discussing what he would do to fix all of the problems that Bush has created over the past 8 years.

I think it would have been closer had McCain not picked a corrupt, ignorant, small-town moron as his running mate. Palin has been a huge liability, but of course McCain chose her.

Obama seems to at least have a sense of decency and sufficient dignity to stand above the noisy death throes of the McCain-Palin disaster. He's the man you need in these troubled times

Sarge, logically and geographically speaking Alaska should be part of Canada, shouldn't it?

"If you're black and you vote Obama you're being racist."

By the same logic, does that mean if you vote for a female V.P. candidate - Palin - you are being sexist? nope - you are being stupid, because she is ignorant (but she isn't ignorant because she's a woman.)

If the Republicans had picked a black presidential candidate who supported the same kind of disastrous neocon policies which have hastened America's downfall over the past 8 years, do you serious think they'd still vote for him? If so, YOU are the one whose views are in question.

People of all races have some respect for Powell because he was a lone voice of reason in the Bush White House - until he got dispensed with.

Profound good sense and wise comments from Colin Powell.

The U.S. electorate will appreciate that if Palin is representative of John McCain's policy on appointing a cabinet, he deserves no support at all. Judging by his choice of Palin as V.P. (which requires intelligence, international experience and diplomacy), he'd put a pyromaniac in charge of the fire department and a paedophile in charge of child care.

Kudos to Alec Baldwin, I say.

Big ratings were the result of so many people expecting Palin to come out with some new gaffe, or further demonstration of her ignorance and profound unsuitability to run much more than a warm bath for the kids.

Managing to avoid humiliating herself is now regarded as a major victory - which demonstrates just how much credibility this fiasco of a Republican campaign actually has.

All Obama has to do is keep quiet and let McCain-Palin complete their self-destruction.

McCain then used the incident to highlight his own economic plan, which would extend the tax cuts of President George W Bush and lower the tax rate on capital gains.

John McCain is either lying or deluding himself if he thinks that he can continue with the current level of spending and cut taxes at the same time. The sums simply don't add up. The only thing Obama's guilty of is not promising the impossible.

What a dumb question to ask, given that he is not authorised to practice as a plumber anyway. Making $250K p.a. is unlikely to be a problem now...

That's gonna go over real well on Fox and Limbaugh.

coulrophobic - why should that worry the Obama campaign ? Only right wing blockheads watch that scaremongering channel and listen to Rush Limbaugh anyway

In the UK, expect a second winter of Labour discontent under former "miracle chancellor" Gordon Brown... Unemployment figures are up hugely, despite government manipulation, property values are in freefall, repossessions and bankruptcies are rising fast and consumer spending withering away. It's going to be a pretty grim Christmas in Britain this year.

I voted with my feet before Lewis Hamilton did! I'm glad that he's made a move to Switzerland and keeping his tax out of the hands of Gordon Brown who has managed to splurge Billions of pounds on wasteful and in some cases unnecessary public services.

LH is a great driver and comes across as a decent human being as well. There's nothing wrong with being an arrogant driver as long as you aren't a dangerous one. The gloss came off Schumacher's amazing skill as a driver because he was basically a cheat. Being an Englishman, we don't expect to see Lewis following that particular example

Is that really a cop? He looks very much like a junior security guard to me. Cops have special belts and tend to fill their uniforms rather more "amply".

If he is, perhaps he should arrest her for using the exit rather than the entrance.

A good opportunity for Obama to finally kill off any lingering prospect of a McCain-Palin victory.

My only concern is that there are still so many people who can't see Palin for the ludicrous joke candidate that she is

kenchan, I don't work in finance directly - and I have no big personal axe to grind one way or another. When the consequences hit, they hit everyone, though. I agree that people directly responsible deserve a measure of "punishment" for what they've created, especially because the extent of the consequences have yet to be felt.

The point I'm making is that people - usally with populist wealth-envy or with political points to make - are oversimplifying this to the attractive "crucify the overpaid bankers" argument. In fact, everyone has some element of responsibility in this, from governments down to anyone with a credit card or a mortgage. I get irritated to see people rabble rousing and proposing over-simplistic and simply innaccurate "solutions" which will actually make the problem much worse for most people, not just for a few rich financiers. From a libertarian point of view, what does the least harm to the most people is to restore confidence to the credit markets, and though we may argue about the details, the general idea of what they are trying to do is correct. Most informed people agree.
