Why were Tohoku women working there anyway? Were they dissatisfied with life in an evacuation centre?

They were trying to rebuild their lives as quickly as possible. There are not many job openings available to them. Perhaps, their family breadwinner is no longer alive.

Did the police kindly offer them free accomodation or was that offer only made to the manager, who was probably paid to stand in as a fall guy for the real owner?

Does this mean that all companies will provide a true SMS service or access to SMS via a gateway?

I think the reason for this unusual move towards compatibility is a result of telephone numbers becoming portable across companies. We use to be able to tell which carrier from the number, but that is no longer the case, which, at the moment, means if we send a message to another number, we must first call that number to confirm which carrier they use.

Of course, there could be another reason: we may have to buy a new updated phone to access the SMS service.

Sometimes SMS is used for verification. Some overseas banks use do this, so standardisation will help.

Badge213, often standard is best. You should not allow yourself to believe that the "enhanced" systems used in Japan are better when term "enhanced" is used to hide the fact that it is incompatible.

A car crash is a car crash whatever language you understand. Hollywood relies on action and special effects at the expense of the script.

We have seen so many car crashes and special effects and so much blood that now they are just boring.

Hollywood movies may appeal to non-English speakers, but those who understand English demand better scripts.

Probably because they compare Japan with other Asian countries.

For a holiday Japan never did compare well with other Asian countries anyway. It is the hardest country in Asia to travel in as so few people including taxi drivers and hotel staff speak or are willing to speak a foreign language. People may want to see shrines and temples, but they want to do something else as well.

Are there any beaches worth going to in the summer in mainland Japan? All the ones I have seen are too crowded or just plain ugly and dirty. The only nice ones are in places like Okinawa.

One activity that does bring tourists to Japan is winter sports, but those tourist are staying away because winter is over.

Seriously, compare Japan with Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, China. Then remember that some more huge negatives have been added such as the continuing nuclear disaster, which no one really understands, certainly not Tepco, and continuing earthquakes.

Many of the people who do want to travel to Japan are from other Asian countries, and it is hard or even impossible for many of them to get visas.

Posted in: Why do tourists continue to stay away from Japan, despite the fact that there are many places of interest far away from the crisis-affected areas? What should Japanese tourism officials do to promote Japan as a safe destination?

tkoind2, many companies have realised that a good way to increase sales and profits is to shift money from the production budget to the promotional budget. This results in lower quality.

If a product is heavily advertised, this often means it is low quality. A good demonstration of this would be a chain of English schools that went broke a few years ago. It was heavily advertised, but used the cheapest teachers it could.

It is also true about beer.

If you want quality pizza, you can get it in Tokyo. Try Tonino in Shimo Takaido, but that is Italian pizza, not American.

I want to turn the lights and airconditioning off in the train, but I don't know how to. I don't use an airconditioner at home and don't have the lights on in the daytime, but that is normal for me.

Why does the parade need guarding? What are they being guarded from? Why so many police?

I suspect they are there to guard Tepco's head office and prevent the demonstrator's from entering it.

Now wouldn't it be nice if Tepco sent people from Fukushima over there. It would help them to overcome the electricity shortfall in the summer, too. It might even be cheaper than housing them in refugee centres.

It won't happen though. That idea is far too creative and imaginative.

I think what is meant is that after six months, it will not be at crisis level. It will be downgraded to an emergency or even a problem.

Later they will follow the British example and rename the plant so that they will be no more news a the Fukushima plant.

I read something like that was being sent over from China. Is that the one?

I do not think many in Japan understand the importance of pets. Psychologically, they are of extreme importance to their owners, and their loss can indeed be a severe loss to them. They can help their owners recover.

Kentaro75 says: "The Japanese government will not support legalization of a dangerous drug." Yet the Japanese government approves the sale of tobacco that causes many deaths from cancer and alcohol that every year takes the lives of many university students through overdoses, many salarymen through liver disease and many others through drunk driving.

The fact is even mochi is more dangerous than marijuana.

I believe Otsuka Pharmaceutical is involved in the production or development of Sativex, a medicinal version of marijuana.

They built a tsunami barrier to protect the town of Taro. It took years to construct and cost of fortune. It did not work. Water got trapped inside the barrier.

Unfortunately, it did succeed in giving the people of Taro a false sense of security. They were so convinced that they were safe that some stood on the barrier to watch the tsunami. They were swept away.

I think since the Asian tsunami, people are becoming more aware of their danger.

People should be encouraged and helped to set up their communities in safer places. However, existing communities should not be broken up. Try to keep a town's people together in a new town.

I fear that as pouring concrete is an integral part of political corruption, this will be the chosen remedy. We will have more concrete and more tetrapods.

Cactus Jack, yes we probably will. It will be part of our electricity bill and taxes.

I have been told TEPCO is talking about raising prices. Will TEPCO workers receive bonuses this year? I have no argument with those entering the nuclear plant now receiving bonuses, but management ...

Why is there a shortage of plain white flour? What are the Japanese doing with that? Not so many make their own bread. Tempura does not use so much.

People are just panicking and buying unnecessary not just too much of what they need, but what they don't need too.

Piglet, even bad people can do some good. Let them do some good if they want to.

At least they understand the Japanese system of red tape and cut straight through it. Honest aid agencies have been turned away because of red tape. Other aid has been rejected because of red tape. I heard one foreign company tried to donate a container of food, but that too was rejected.

If you had no roof over your head and nothing to eat, I am sure you would be willing to accept food from anyone.

The Yakuza may be dishonest and evil in many ways, but are they that much worse than some of the crooks that have proliferated in Wall Street in recent years? Are they worse than people who manufacture and profit from the sale of weapons?

Most bottled water was tap water before it was put in a bottle. Most is not mineral water. It may have been filtered.

I have my own filter, so no need to buy bottled water.
