    TheQuestion

A lot of people don't claim the max deduction in order to pad future years. Charitable donation deductions have a 5 year carryforward that can be used if you have a particularly good year and want to tamp it down. For example lets say Romney averages 8 million a year but one year he gets 14 due to some unforeseen boom in one of his holdings, he can use the carryforward to take some of the bite out of the unexpected tax consequences.

That is not what the tax code says. I reference www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p526.pdf. It states:

You can carry over your contributions that you are not able to deduct in the current year because they exceed your adjusted-gross-income limits. You can deduct the excess in each of the next 5 years until it is used up, but not beyond that time.

If you read the entire section of code that pertains to carry overs in each category you will find that you can only carry over that which exceeds the allowable limit in that year. So tamping down is NOT an option. Claim it unless it exceeds the limit or lose it. Any statement to the contrary is being disingenuous to put it nicely. If you claim to be doing this yourself, a claim which I immediately found dubious, then you need to fess up to the IRS because you have been cheating.

I've done it myself, its just another one of those common tax practices that most people don't understand.

Apparently the IRS doesn't understand either because you are not allowed to do it. You can only carry over if you exceed the year's limit NOT because you CHOOSE to do it to lessen your tax burden.

I love it when the conservatives try to slide one past everyone because they believe Democrats are to stupid to be high up the corporate ladder and understand vast areas of business including (but not limited to): statistics, accounting and finance.

Democrats are fully justified in claiming that by releasing more and more of his tax information it reveals that his tax rate is very low. He wants to give more tax breaks to the very rich so it is a valid campaign issue. Oh and we know conservatives like to give to charity. Look at how they enable the largest corporations to pay ZERO income taxes When Romney mentions the "47%" he can never quite bring himself to mention the corporate squatters that have paid no income tax in at least 1 of the past 4 years and many of them have paid zero in all of the past 4 years. They are: Pepco Holdings, General Electric, PG&E Corp., Wisconsin Energy, NiSource, Paccar, Integrys Energy Group, CenterPoint Energy, Atmos Energy, Tenet Healthcare, American Electric Power, Boeing, Ryder System, Con-way, Verizon Communications, Interpublic Group, Duke Energy, NextEra Energy, CMS Energy, Navistar International, Consolidated Edison, Mattel, El Paso, Baxter International, Corning, DTE Energy, Honeywell, International, Wells Fargo and DuPont.

Oh and yes it is actually charity. 26 of the 30 companies listed continued to enjoy negative federal income tax rates. That means they still made more money after tax than before tax over the four years!

No, the vast Americans that comprise the "47%" are hard working individuals who can't make a living wage in America. So why don't you conservative posters on JT tell us how those workers are slackers. Or maybe you would propose the argument that they have chosen their lot.

Come on conservatives tell us how those corporations and Romney deserve those tax breaks. Tell us that those corporations that pay ZERO tax on their earnings worked so much harder than the average American worker did, and thus deserves those tax breaks so much more.

That is why we want to see the tax returns of Mitt Romney. He advocates for tax breaks for corporations and the rich. We want to see if his proposals will benefit him personally.

Too bad for the conservatives on JT - the American people agree. Release all the tax returns.

Why conservatives have to distort the truth and misrepresent our intentions should be obvious. They want to find excuses to present to America. They want to say, "He paid his share of taxes." But we do not claim he did not meet his legal obligation; rather that he DOES NOT pay his FAIR SHARE.

Just remember Mitt Romney said, "Corporations are people." Justice Scalia affirmed that corporations are people in Citizens United vs. the Federal Election Commission.

You see it is plainly, clear; it's ok for the world's largest corporations, located in the U.S., not to pay taxes but that family of 4 where the father and mother both work and still can't make ends meet better pay more than Romney pays.

You know because Romney creates jobs and hard working Americans don't.

I love how the conservative "Economists" (who deny the negligible effects of the Bush tax cuts and the obvious effect that Obama's efforts had in sparing us from a depression - both of which the real economists overwhelmingly recognize) have now turned into conservative "Accountants" and "Auditors."

With the conservative's analysis of Romney's tax returns the voodoo economists have turned into voodoo accountants.

Yeah, people don't claim the full value of their charitable donations on tax returns all the time. Hilarious!

...but that he does not want his opponents to pick over the fine detail of a decade of family finances, despite fierce political pressure. [acknowledged - not a Romney quote]

== Public perception - The douche is hiding something.

With conservatives the consistent lowering of Romney in the polls is directly proportional to their face reddening and their veins popping out.

I can feel the slow burn starting that will culminate when the fat lady sings. I love it. I can't wait to hear "The main stream media...blah, blah, blah" and (this one I especially love) "Media bias, Media bias..." that I heard hear four years ago. I recall some were angry for months later and I still heard the bellyaching more than a year later. I am longing for the sound of the conservative whiners in the distance "waahh! waahh! waahh!."

The truth is that Romney cannot afford to release the important tax returns of the last decade because it exposes his accounts; that hard working Americans feel betrayed by. You know the ones: the Swiss bank accounts and the offshore accounts. Too bad Mitt. FAIL!!!

I found no black, minority faces in Norfalk, VA today.

Oh I am quite sure Romyan will pick up a few million token toms and token to`mas's this fall. There are a few spewing the conservative ignorance as if economists haven't proven the tax cuts of the 00 years didn't stimulate the economy one iota and did damage due to the deficit effect. Some right leaning economists will say it may have had a negligible effect but that is the best the honest/intelligent economists would claim. But when closely analyzed and compared to the Clinton years in particular, where taxes did rise a little, it is clear that tax breaks, especially for the very wealthiest just don't stimulate the economy.

But Romney only needs to pay 14% tax on his income so the world is a bright place according to the idiot conservatives.

I am soooo glad mittens Romney chose Paul Ryan to be his running mate. Rep. Ryan`s privatization and voucher plan would have significantly raised costs for Seniors on healthcare. This is indisputable. The added bonus is all the documentation that Ryan is responsible for and how his words will lead many to believe that Ryan is definitely for the destruction of Medicare.

Thank you Mitt for putting Romney/Ryan on bumpers across America. I can guarantee you that most prominent businessmen will get the magnetized version so they can remove it on November 6, 2012 @ 10:00 p.m..

If you think the April 23, 2012 press release or the Wyden-Ryan, of late 2011, had great counter campaign material just look back to to January 2010. Ryan released a plan that would privatize a portion of Social Security. On April 1, 2009 he proposed that starting in 2021, the federal government would no longer pay for Medicare benefits for persons born after 1975.

I can't wait to start digging into the proposal he made on May 21, 2008, Ryan introduced H.R. 6110, titled Roadmap for America's Future Act of 2008.

Of course then I, along with thousands and thousands of other dedicated individuals, will read this text along with proposals way back in 2004 where he supported the Social Security Personal Savings Fund which would REPLACE your Social Security benefits. No matter what changes he will say he has now made along the way he will never convince many seniors of his true intentions. It is there in documentation for all to see.

Truly humorous will be the outcry of the conservatives that will be claiming Paul Ryan's plan would have saved Social Security. But when they defend him the seniors will only hear, " Blah, blah, blah, blah." So senior citizens of America I implore you to listen to the PAC ads that quote his words and writings that effect recipients entitlement paychecks and when the republicans respond with their PAC attack ads you need to collectively put your index fingers in your ears and all say "La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la . . . I can't hear yoooouuuuu."

OK, let's assume Romney was sole stockholder, chairman of the board, chief executive officer, and president of Bain Capital from 1999 - 2002 and did not make any decisions and had zilch influence over the corporation (I won't believe that and I doubt the American public will by election time). We know it to be a fact Romney was sole stockholder, chairman of the board, chief executive officer, and president of Bain Capital.

If that is his record. If that is the record he wants to run on. Maybe he just wants the title of President of the United States of America. He doesn't need to make decisions or anything, he doesn't need to actually do the work of the President; he will just have the title.

Then we can pay him when he "retires retroactively" as U.S. president.

Don't buy into the hype! Romney did NOT need to finalize a severance agreement to assign a CEO and elect a chairman of the board. What the conservatives want us to believe that Mitt did not foresee his appointment to be overseer of the Olympic Games. That being said he had all the time during his consideration for the post to ponder his Bain corporate plans. Romney was the sole stockholder . Romney was the CEO. Romney was Chairman of the Board. Romney had the power to hire a new CEO and NOBODY had any say in his decision. All he had to do is draw up the paperwork. Corporations do it all the time in a matter of days. He had well over 3 years. The question is are you stupid enough to believe he did not perform these transferal tasks because ... Wow, I can't even end that. What possible explanation can be given to anyone that knows the tiniest facts about business could be given that would explain an over 3 year delay of tasks that could be easily accomplished in days and fiduciary responsibility would dictate that should be accomplished maximum in a matter of weeks. Oh, did I forget to mention that Mitt Romney was PRESIDENT OF BAIN CAPITAL from 1999 - 2002. Geez, how stupid do these conservatives think we are to believe he could not instantly fill at least two of those essential management roles long before he finalized his severance agreement. Please explain to all the business majors out there past and present what finalizing his severance agreement had to do with hiring a new CEO and electing Chairman of the Board. By the way we can also figure out as Sole Stockholder he made his own severance agreement. Do the conservatives want us to believe that he gave that power away while holding the TOP THREE POSITIONS IN BAIN CAPITAL & once again I remind you that he was sole stockholder. For anyone who has not realized what that entails - IT MEANS HE OWNED THE WHOLE DAMN COMPANY !

Again, Who was in Charge from 1999 - 2002? Who was making the decisions? Why hasn't he or she stepped forward?

On Sunday, Ed Gillespie, a senior adviser to Mr. Romney, told CNN that the candidate had "retired retroactively" from Bain more than two years after leaving in 1999

Let's see retroactive. A rectroactive law is one that becomes official after the fact of the activity. A rectroactive pay raise is one that began before all the work one currently is doing but applies to all work done in the mean time. The pay raise goes back to an earlier time but you have been working since then!!!

I get retro; that is past or before or previously - but actively ... Can a conservative please use "actively" in a sentence to mean "not now, but before?" Or for that matter just use actively in a sentence so we understand what time frame that is referring to.

Yeah, Mitt Romney "retired retroactively" alright.

Fact: Romney was sole stockholder, chairman of the board, chief executive officer, and president of Bain Capital until 2002.

Romney, sole stockholder, chairman of the board, chief executive officer, and president wants the American people to believe he had zero, null, zilch, nada, zot, nil, diddly-squat, goose egg, naught, void, zero, zip, cipher influence over the decisions made at Bain Capital.

What strikes me as odd is that if Romney, sole stockholder, chairman of the board, chief executive officer, and president wasn't in charge at Bain Capital who was? Why haven't they trotted out the grand decision maker of the period up until 2002? I'm sure they will come up with someone soon NOW? However it will NEVER explain what took them so long to do it. But my question to the conservatives NOW is who was in charge of Bain Capital from 1999 until 2002?????

Maybe if the conservative republicans think if they tell themselves Romney had nothing to do with the decisions made at Bain Capital long enough they can make themselves believe it.

The truth is that they are stuck with Romney. It would be too big of a scandal to cut him loose now. Soooooooooo, they will in fact defend ANY thing he says or does now.

It is truly mind numbing to believe that the conservatives want us to believe the sole stockholder, chairman of the board, chief executive officer, and president of Bain Capital never, ever made one decision concerning the corporation.

Romney and the conservatives: "Hey guess what guys, we want you to believe it took THREE, 3, THREE years to complete the documentation. Hilarious! So the conservatives have the unmitigated gall to put forth the allegations that Democrats, who are getting the facts out there, are not being "civil." What else can they do? Romney was caught lying. Oh yeah they can also prop UP Romney as the great, successful businessman (who did it by OUTSOURCING AMERICAN JOBS).

Fact: Romney was sole stockholder, chairman of the board, chief executive officer, and president of Bain Capital until 2002.

Romney is being dishonest, the CBO is not reporting that "Obamacare" is bankrupting America. Just like the dishonesty of the IRS spending all this capital to process the new tanning salon laws concerning the 10% tax. It was stated that it would take 81 IRS workers on that alone. What was not told was that there are 25,000 tanning salons (according to the same article) taxed at 10% to pay that $11.5 million cost. That means the average tanning salon only needs to earn a profit of $3965.52 ANNUALLY to pay those costs (yes that is correct, just shy of 4 thousand annual profit). Conservative Republicans are full of deception. However both the website http://dermatology.jwatch.org/cgi/content/full/2002/731/1 (way back in 2002) and the website http://www.ama-assn.org/amednews/2011/03/21/hlsa0321.htm (in March) state there are 50,000 tanning salons. And I don't know about you but I know for a fact that many of these salons make an $100,000. profit easily in a year. But if the 50,000 tanning salons only made an average of $70,000 per annum they would pay THE ENTIRE COST $359,000,000. that the referenced article cited the IRS would have to pay for ALL the costs of the IRS would be incurring as per the article. Wow, what a difference a few FACTS make when looking for the TRUTH. Again, the Conservative Republicans, of which Romney wants to be chief, are deceivers. They are antipodal bunch who argue all the time but lack the integrity to use the truth. So, maybe the tanning salons across America don't average 70 grand, don't get your panties in a bunch, it was just an example. But it is a far more realistic example than throwing out "81 workers" and "an $11.5 million cost" which was previously cited on JT by a conservative poster. Sorry but that is well paid for. It is not a debit to the U.S. but it brings in revenue.

So, you want to get your facts from Romney?

Pausing as some in the crowd heckled, he added, 'You take a look!'

We are taking a look at your lying ass. You said you quit Bain Capital in 1999 but you really were the firm`s "sole stockholder, chairman of the board, chief executive officer, and president" in 2002. People like Romney think the common working man like many in th NAACP's membership are just dumb sheep who follow Obama because he is black. But many hard working members can read the recently released SEC filings for Romney and realize he is a BOLD FACED LIAR. It is just like his right wing conservative, fundamentalist supporters who are willing to become traitors to their own stated beliefs to support a Mormon. Many of these fundamentalists have repetitively stated that the Morman church is anti-christian. I know for a fact that EVERY evangelical christian church denies the Mormans are actually christian. So, they HATE a christian, Obama, because he wants to be fair to gays but they are willing to put the epidomy of anti-christian theology which is contrary to the very foundation of their core beliefs to defeat "Obamacare" and the evil Democratic empire.

Pontius Pilate asked the [Republican] multitude if they wanted Obama and "Then cried they all again, saying, Not this man, but Barabbas [Romney]." He [Pontius Pilate] was afraid to offend the ... [Republicans]. He knew they were an uneasy, factious, and seditious people; and he was afraid to irritate them. He asked again and they said "Give us Barabbas! [Romney]."

How about addressing quality services instead of blaming Republicans for people not having health insurance. Prior to the Obamacare, people could buy health insurance there was nothing stopping the 20000 Americans from not getting health insurance. Just because you believe people have health insurance doesn't mean the health insurance is going to allow coverages for everything. The problem was the health insurance was too expensive and if the health insurance wanted to provide coverage for people then they just had to lower the price but you get what you paid for. Again, hospitals can not turn away people who don't have insurance. [blah blah blah]

Where do I begin? First let me start with the most glaring display of absolutely no grasp of the facts or how to present them. 20 thousand Americans; really? Hilarious! Assuming you mean million and just can't find worth in the effort to add the additional zeros, the reality is that about 44 million people in this country have no health insurance, and another 38 million have inadequate health insurance. This means that nearly one-third of Americans face each day without the security of knowing that, if and when they need it, medical care is available to them and their families.

"there was nothing stopping the ... Americans from not getting health insurance." Facts are facts. If people were willing to pay more for goods and services and demand a "living wage" they would have done so by now. Without elaborating further this means that the sheer cost of health insurance would have always stopped "the ... Americans from not getting health insurance." That is the truth of the matter and the facts remain those incomes will not be rising anytime in the future to meet the previous burden of health care costs. Obama's plan will reduce those costs using the business model for insurance of the larger pool reducing each participants costs. And for the less informed folks out there, that is business not socialism.

Concerning the quality of health care, health care advances will continue as they always have. Not only will we continue to see more and more advances but we will see them grow at an exponential rate and not linear, meaning the rate of growth itself will continue to rise. Such ill conceived notions that health care advances will somehow slow down is just about as ignorant as claiming that legal costs are so high that they would have the impact of the magic bullet should they be removed. Conservatives want to take away our right to be compensated when some negligent doctor makes such a gross error that he reduces my ability to continue to make the large bank.

Lastly, stating that hospitals can't refuse patients is advocating emergency room care for 44,000,000 Americans; sorry we tried that; IT DOES NOT WORK!

It is not socialism since we are relying on private insurance with government subsidies to the poor and middle class to help afford the premium.

And you do realize that Social Security, public roads, public schools, postal service, police, and firefighters would be considered socialism, right?

How idiotic to try to use "socialism" to ...

I am very glad the President of the United States spoke out on this. It was great in February when a federal appeals court struck down California's Proposition 8, which bans gay marriage, as unconstitutional.

Maria - May. 10, 2012 - 01:55PM JST , Of course you were correct and all of these countries passed laws concerning marriage; they had all previously passed civil union type laws but they ALL passed same sex marriage laws. Well Denmark will have a same sex marriage law by June 15th of this year; so that will be 11.

It is all a matter of record and each of the 10 countries uses the word marriage in the legislation that was passed and signed into law.

Same-sex marriage in Argentina has been legal since July 22, 2010. A bill for legalization was approved on May 5, 2010, by the Chamber of Deputies, and on July 15, 2010, by the Senate. President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner signed it on July 21.

The Danish government has proposed marriage equality legislation in parliament 14 March 2012. If parliament passes the bill, and royal assent is achieved on time, the law enters into force on 15 June 2012.

In Belgium, on May 28, 2002, a bill legalizing same-sex marriage was introduced in the Senate. It passed on November 28, 2002, with 46 votes to 15. On January 30, 2003, the bill passed the Chamber of Representatives by 91 votes to 22. King Albert II signed and promulgated the bill on February 13, 2003 and on February 28 it was published in the Belgian Official Journal and came into force on June 1.

In Canada, the Civil Marriage Act was introduced by Prime Minister Paul Martin's Liberal government in the Canadian House of Commons on February 1, 2005 as Bill C-38. It was passed by the House of Commons on June 28, 2005, by the Senate on July 19, 2005, and it received Royal Assent the following day. On December 7, 2006,

In Iceland, on 23 March 2010, the Government presented a bill to repeal the registered partnership law and allow couples to marry regardless of gender. On 11 June 2010 the Icelandic Parliament approved the bill 49 to 0, with 14 abstentions. The law took effect on 27 June 2010.

In the Netherlands, The main article in the Act changed article 1:30 in the marriage law to read as follows: (In Dutch of course) A marriage can be contracted by two people of different or the same sex. The law came into effect on 1 April 2001,

In Norway, The first parliamentary hearing, including the vote, was held on June 11, 2008, with the lower house approving by 84 votes to 41 a bill that allowed same-sex couples to marry. The new legislation amended the definition of civil marriage to make it gender neutral. Norway's upper house passed the bill with a 23–17 vote on June 17. The King of Norway, Harald V, granted royal assent thereafter. The law took effect on January 1, 2009.

In Portugal, On January 8, 2010, the Portuguese Parliament passed the bill establishing same-sex marriage in its first reading. The final parliamentary vote took place on 11 February, with the bill being approved. The President signed the bill. The law was published in Diario da Republica on May 31, 2010 and became effective on June 5, 2010.

The bill to allow same-sex marriage in Spain was short: it added a new paragraph to article 44 of the civil code, saying that Matrimony shall have the same requisites and effects regardless of whether the persons involved are of the same or different sex. The king gave his Royal Assent to Law 13/2005 on 1 July 2005; and the law was gazetted in the Boletin Oficial del Estado on 2 July, and came into effect on 3 July.

In South Africa, the Civil Union Act (Act 17 of 2006) provides for opposite-sex and same-sex civil marriages, religious marriages and civil partnerships.

On 21 January 2009, a bill was introduced in the Swedish parliament to make the legal concept of marriage gender-neutral. The bill was passed on 1 April and took effect on 1 May.
