PR disaster - you got that right BurakuminDes. Do they really think the NZ govt won't stand up for his rights. I bet a deal will be worked out and he'll be quietly put on a plane / boat somewhere before reaching Japan with a slap on the wrists and a heroes welcome home. Be interesting to see whether the story generates much media attention here. A poll of public opinion in Japan would be interesting. Poor Japanese whalers (apologies - I mean reseachers), will their woes never end.

I don't think the industry in Japan has any future without proper regulation, accreditation, approval and guarantee of fees by the government. There is nothing to stop any Willy Wonka opening or running a school (or even using that name) in Japan. There are no audits (educational) or inspections to ensure quality or anything like a quality assurance system. Consequently schools compete with the lowest cost model that make the highest profit (Gabba? at present) with disastrous results. Sorry Dean, but I don't believe good intentions, nice smile, sales system, or financial business model etc are enough in the long run even in Japan. When Geos owned schools went bust in Australia (I'm not an Aussie or work for Geos) the government's compulsory insurance scheme made sure the students didn't get burned and will be able to continue their studies at approved language schools with qualified teachers who teach on accredited courses, thereby helping maintain confidence. In Japan, the confidence is disappearing and there is little awareness of what changes are needed. Let me finish this off by going straight for the jugular. Regulation must ensure all the Willy Wonka outfits are and stay shut down.

Auschwitz will always be remembered as a place where unspeakably horrendous atrocities took place. And there were others..Treblinka, Belzec. But can anyone name a single Soviet camp. No? Well, that's because they were on the winning allied side. They existed well before and after the Nazi camps and their crimes in terms of scale dwarfed the Nazis. Yes, a deal was made and the murderers walk free even today. So much for real justice for all. The only mention of the Soviets in the article is they liberated the camps - and not they continued operating very similar camps. I recommend a good movie called The Soviet Story to get a bigger picture.

Exactly harmoneeikaiwa - need to fire off a good sized nuke to get any attention.
And lets understand the real meaning of NK speak。
North Korea called for an end of hostile relations with the United States and renewed its commitment to a nuclear-free Korean peninsula in a New Year’s message Friday.
translation...
NK wants more attention and aid from the US while never giving up anything, least alone its weapons of mass destruction.

Should be a good full-on match. Not like some of the friendly show-case football games by visiting big name teams. Both coaches and some of the players jobs are on the line. But gain popularity among Japanese? Perhaps a bit as a spectator sport. As for the J-team, who are technically competent, still have a very long way to go in terms of raw aggression and power. John Kirwin should look to the sumo not the samurai.

I would say they are trying a few new tricks to keep up with the competition. The Air NZ/ JAL overpriced direct flight monolopy they have milked is going to get eaten away. Doesn't say how long either- 1 week? 5 days? My guess is the young backpacker type who want to spend longer, and actually experience outdoor NZ, will fly Jetstar. The richer, mostly older crowd will take the short trip direct flight option. From Okinawa is an interesting one.

Wouldn't think the " stick with LDP because it has produced results " line could be believed by the majority of Japanese. It's a joke, right? Hold on. This is Japanese politics we are talking about. They haven't tossed them out since the economy went bad.

I'm sure the homeless, unemployed etc, will enjoy them for free too. Well, they would in most countries. I guess most Japanese are just too honest to take advantage of this offer which was the first thing that came to my mind.

Pitiful? Hang on a sec. How many Aussie teams made it in the super 14 - none. Will all the ABs big guns be back and rested - Yes. My pick is SA first, ABs second and Wallabies last.

Who wrote that little gem of a line for them...Dr Evil? They crack me up. The world will miss them for their absurd propaganda when they are gone. They are definetley a one of a kind.

Agreed Den. It is no surprise that lack of proper regulation and control of the industry in Japan has eventually resulted in a decline of confidence and profits. But given the state of the economy I'm suprised not more have failed.

Kim probably wants to raise tensions so his son can take over the NK military (dictatorship) more easily, then claim a victory in his name so his succession is secured. That or, worst case scenerio, he really does want to go out with a bang. He could do it if he thinks he is dying and doesn't think the regime and his offspring will survive. Killing lots of innocent people is beyond him or his henchmen.

Apart from recording lessons, there is not a lot of real detail. I would be interested to know whether the government, as part of a quality assurance process, requires language schools such as this one to be registered and approved, have inspections or other external checks as part of an accreditation process. Are they required to employ qualified and experienced staff and managers, have their courses monitored and approved, and have proper facilities amd resources for students and teachers? But seriously, I get the impression the language learning industry in Japan is a market led popularity contest run by business people for profit. Teach Japan A Lesson. Yes indeed, I'm sure it will. But this country does seem very slow to learn.

Oh No! Another trade surplus. I'm just shattered. Could mean an even higher yen. I might have to pay less for my next holiday or mortgage. How devastating. Nevermind. Just thinking about it. Are there any English speaking countries that make trade surpluses? GM is just a sign of the times.
