This will make a difference if you use the Big Mac index to compare relative prices between countries. The cost getting people to work nights (and smile) may have also gone up. I wonder, if the price of a Mac is going up about 7.5%, whether wages are being put up that much also. And are you (Mac and other low wage workers) loving it. 'I'm loving it' always sounds like subliminal corporate propaganda to me.

From an economic perspective it is clear through moving labor-intensive factories to China that Japan does not need to have a large, growing pool of labor. There would be a sound arguement for attracting a small number of highly qualified and skilled people. I agree with you rjd_jr. Rampant immigration is not the answer but whether the J-govt will do anything to stop the shady practices of some employers who take advantage of foreigners is yet to be seen. Employment rules are sometimes enforced in Japan.

Well put Betzee. The Chinese communist govt clearly does not intend to make any real concessions. The talks are pure spin to improve foreign perceptions of China and placate foreign leaders just before the games. I wonder, like Yasser Arafat, someone more hardline will take over the Tibetan cause.

The Chinese communist government pumps them full of nationalistic propaganda from day one. This propaganda is much more subtle than before but no less powerful. They believe they are being pro-China but it is really pro-communist policy and not in their best long-term interests. Hence you never see Chinese burning their own flag in protest.

Talk about messed up. Doesn't get much more ridiculous than this.

And , "No one noticed the 15-centimeter blade stuck between his shoulders". Pretty noticable I would have thought. And he even walked around town.

Things happen when you drink....right....only in Russia me thinks. I will have to check out Russia one day for myself.
