  This story reads like Japan is the victim here, trying to play on national sentiment after March 11, this whole PR campaign from Japan leaves a very bitter taste in my mouth.

  I have to agree with Ozawa here. $4 million isn't much to just have at home. It's basically a solid weekend out when you're really crushing it.

  How much money do you actually have and what do you do?

  Probably not. "Duty free" means there's no sales tax or other tariff on the item. If the customer is charged a sales tax on the purchase,

  Sales tax is included in the price in Japan, therefor you are getting 5% off with Duty free.

  They'd have to ship it directly to the airport and put it on my flight out of the country (which is why REAL duty-free shops are located at international points of departure).

  No they don't, I bought LED light bulbs from Tokyo Hands duty free, you fill out a form and they give them to you and you have to declare them at the airport.

  Keeping things in cash is dodgy period, if you wanted to keep your money out of the bank you would buy gold or something buy keeping cash is avoiding taxes

  You have to take it out of the country (and back again if you live here), but yes.

  Are you crapping me? It's not a discount it is called Duty free, you don't pay tax, all major stores in Japan pretty much do it for foriegners.... heck even Toyko Hands do it...

  Perhaps they should have used that money spend on whaling research to give to these people. Seems just wrong and the government is trying to forget these people.

  I have NO OBJECTION to using my tax dollars in this way.... please send more of my tax dollars to help the SS effort.

  As a tax-paying Australian resident, I take offense at this.

  As also a tax-paying Australian resident, I am EXTREMELY happy my tax dollars are being used to save the whales.
