This is what happens when farmers control the country. Japan has not re-apportioned election districts since 1945, so now one farm vote is worth almost 5 city votes. There would be no LDP with re-apportionment, so don't expect that to happen. Besides, most politicians inherited their seat from their father, so they have no job skills to do other work. Japan is quite doomed thanks to the farmers who live off of subsidies from welthier city people. They actually laugh at us.
Posted in: People will be living in a society where they could be punished for not knowing what's secret and what's not. Arrests, court judgments, all could be secret. This would violate the constitution.

I go to China once or twice a year on business (granted, I'm only in big cities, mainly Shanghai), but I have yet to meet a Chinese with the "hardened attitude". Last month, at karaoke in Shanghai, they wanted me to teach the latest AKB48 song, which I couldn't because I'm not a fan. However, JAPAN IS DOOMED. Things would be really different if we had democracy. Japan does NOT have democracy because of vote disparity of amost 1 country vote equivalent to 5 city votes, the conservative country farmers (OK, country bumpkins) rule the country with leaders from political families who pass seats in the Diet from father to son. The politicians will not re-apportion the diet seats because most of them will loose their jobs, and they don't have any skills for real jobs. If city people were represented, there would be none of this hawkish attitude and Japan would be peaceful. That stupid Ishihara, former mayor of Tokyo, was elected as a protest against LDP. He was pushed out, and don't be naive to think otherwise. LDP would disappear if we really had democracy in Japan.

Japanese news said this was added to the "intangible cultural asset" list (I'm not sure about the English). It seems to me that food is very tangible.

dispersing cesium particles which typically cling to soils and sediment
Yes, and when it clings to soils and sediment, it cannot enter the food chain because plants cannot absorb this. It sits there harmless. No big threat.

Dear Mr. Biden,
The car market is open here in Japan. There are no tarriffs on US cars. Granted, there are quotas on each model (2000 as I recall), which scuks, but US makers can't even manage to sell this many. There are Ford and AM dealers here in Tokyo. Whether or not they have models for the Japanese market, they do not advertise or put any energy into the Japanese market, and nobody knows they are here.

The main problem is S Korean historians who point to the progress toward modernization contributed by Japan during occupation. I know "occupation" is a stinky way to modernize.

China is not going to shoot down airplanes flying between Japan and Taiwan. In my experience, these flights are all (no matter which airline) full of Taiwanese, who are, after all, according to China at least, Chinese. Will China shoot down airplanes full of Chinese?

Foreign companies, and the US in particular, neet to put more energy into selling cars and other products. Have you ever seen an advertisement for a US car? In my 3 decades of life, I have never seen one. Most Japanese don't even know who they are. Now look at fast food chains, clothes, bicycles, etc. Great success. And Wendy's is coming back. Yeah. They put energy into the Japanese market. US autos don't sell in US.

smithinjapan, we think differently here, which you many have noticed (if you are really in Japan). Notice how mothers laughed when he did the crotch-in-the-kid-face routine. Lots of gay groups working for acceptance here, but sometimes you need a little comic relief too.

What do you mean "tasteless gay stereotypes"? We (gays) loved it! And it was one contribution to making people more at ease with gays. Nobody expects taht gays are actually like Hard Gay. But like anything, it runs its course. Anyway, he does look pretty good in the pictures above.

It has been frequently observed that decision making takes a lot of time because of 根回し nemawashi, getting everyone's opinion, getting everyone on board, etc., from senior executives to the mail clerks. Once the decision is made, things happen quickly and smoothly. With US companies, executives make decisions, and then there is a chaotic process of implementing as everyone tries to coordinate and protect their turf. Look at Obamacare and US car companies. A total mess. We can hardly say Japan has been a failure (world's third largest economy and all).

Alico is a US insurance company that makes most of its money in Japan. They put effort into the Japanese market. US automakers put no effort into getting Japanese share of market. None whatsoever. TPP would turn Japan into US. Nobody here likes that.
Posted in: Japan needs to address its nontariff measures in the automotive and insurance sectors. It is critical to a global package of the TPP.

These are all the symptoms. The problem is the hollowing out of the American mind. Americans don't have the brain power to run or manage the country anymore. Some politicians are pure idiots (Palin). The US will break up within a decade.
