American was veterans came to Iwo Jima to pray before memorial commemorating all of the war dead, including both Japanese and Americans. What's wrong with Abe? We should morn all the war dead together. If he attended, maybe they would say, OK, not 70th anniversary statement necessary!!

We should apologize for joining European Imperialists in their rampage around the world and all the death and destruction that caused. But we couldn't help it because when Japan chose to modernize after being forced to open up by the US, that was the model presented to us. It was modernize and become an Imperialist, or become a colony, and no Japanese wanted that. The difference between S Korea and China with Taiwan is amazing. In Taiwan, old Japanese schools and other buildings are museums. One old school museum shows pictures of Japanese educating Taiwanese children. What went right in Taiwan?

I'm getting to tired of all this I guess. Why don't we just invent the weapon that will wipe out life on earth. The universe will be better off for that.

@UK This is Japan Today, and we are in Japan talking about an event of WWII. I was only talking about Japanese people. My sympathy to the others you talk about, of course.

UK, gokai means "misunderstand" 誤解, not 五回. The cooling system was build by the US contractors. Anyway, I don't disagree with what you say there. But the same applies to GE. Ask the GE3.

It is interesting that they mention Eastwood's "Letters from Iwo Jima". Even though it was showing the Japanese side, it was a bigger hit than "Flags of our Fathers", which showed the American side. Maybe that is like how unexpectedly to everyone, the movie "Pearl Harbor" was a huge success in Japan. Maybe theaters should think about that when they decide not to show Jolie's "Unbroken". I'm sure glad to be born after this, when all I have to worry about is whether my clothes and haircut are stylish enough, rather than whether I'm going to die in the next few seconds or live horribly disfigured the rest of my life.

Young people now just have to worry about whether they are wearing the right fashion or have the right haircut. I just can't imagine what it was like being a young person during that time (on either side), when you worry about whether you will be alive in the next few minutes.

Also, note that it was not the cooling system that failed. It was the backup power system that was placed underground, and which GE refused to change (it was underground because in the US they worry about tornados etc). And scipanthiest, there is plenty of blame to go around. Remember the GE3? They were the three nuclear engineers who refused to afirm the safety of the reactors, quit GE, and joined the anti-nuculear energy movement. Also, TEPCO should have retired the reactors a decade before the event, but the MONEY was just too good. It was a perfect storm of GE incompetence and TEPCO greed.

Fadamor is writing revisionist history. IT'S NOT GE'S FAULT, EVEN THOUGH THEY DESIGNED AND BUILT THE REACTOR! They also, with American contractor's, built the buildings and everything. Japanese did not participate in building the Daiichi (i.e, GE designed and built reactor). When Hitachi and Toshiba were building the second reactor, they requested design changes, for example, that the emergency power be moved above ground, but GE refused to allow any changes due to "safety concerns". So when the tsunami came, we can congratulate GE on their TOTAL lack of forsight. They didn't understand the concept of "TSUNAMI", evidently. And notice that the reactors built by Toshiba and Hitachi have performed somewhat better. That is why some rightists consider Fukushima to be the third atom bomb dropped by the US.

My goodness, for people who have no connection at all with the management of the situation, some people sure have strong opinions about what happened and what will be done about it.
gokai_wo_manekuMar. 20, 2015 - 06:05PM JST
Yes, evidently it has fallen to the floor. If it burns through the floor and gets into the ground, there will be a huge explosion, dwarfing the oxygen ignited explosions that broke the buildings apart. Also, I never hear the name "General Electric", the US company that designed and built the reactor (it is a GE "Mark 1" reactor). What role are they playing in all of this?

This is what Japanese want from Abe. For a nationalist like Abe, poverty is a disgrace. They want him to hit those compaies in the head and give out more of the mountain of cash them have in banks, Japanese are not interested in dying in US started wars all over the world.
