"restoring its pride"? When did N Korea not have pride? They seem a very proud people to me, at least as far as they protray themselves in the media (I've never been there). All those big parades and the mass games.
Posted in: Kim Jong Un was not involved at all. By resolving the abduction problem at this point, it could be the start of North Korea restoring its pride. I’m hoping Kim will have these feelings.

Well, as usual, the Europeans were there 100 years before the Japanese doing their atrocities on the Chinese, but the Japanese get most mention. Fortunateliy, ordinary Chinese don't care about this (except a fringe group). The government seems to have a hard time getting Chinese interested. Instead, Chinese come and visit Japan in record numbers.

@shallots Just to be clear, I have said many times here that Japan did atrocious things, especially in China, and they have a right ot complain if Japanese (stupid) politicians seem to forget about that. China has a job to make sure people don't forget. What I don't like is the double standard people use to judge Japan vs US and Europe. Dr Kingston's assertions are based on one-sided history, if I am not mistaken. It is more complicated than that. I was taught this by SE Asian classmates at university.
Posted in: Although most Japanese don't share Abe's enthusiasm for Japan in jackboots, Brand Japan suffers from Abe's revisionist views because he is the nation's leader 24/7 and the world scrutinizes all of his words and gestures. By showing a lack of contrition about the horrific suffering Japan inflicted on much of the rest of Asia, Abe has inflamed tensions with China and South Korea, and left Japan even more isolated.

@turbotsat No, no Japanese text books. But just now, it only took 5 minutes of English Googling to find that there are a number of SE Asians who praised Japan. Start with: Raja Dato Nong Chik of Malaysia. Then move on to Dutch East ndies (why the "Dutch"?). It was quite easy to find the counter-history. I looked at Dr. Kingston's article at CNN, and he seems to have the White history in mind. But then, so do China and S Korea. And I fully admit Japan did terrible things, so don't mistake me for a stupid nationalist like Abe.

Yeah, one of my US friends also says "Only in Japan!". Really? Some porn stars become regular actresses or talent, and take their male audience with them. Producers love it. Like Iijima Ai 飯島愛. "Only in Japan"?

Wait, in my post above I said "psychoanalytical insight may be helpful". I think I was too generous. I should have said "psychiatric".
Counter-hisory: However, I was really surprised when I was a university student to hear from students from Viet Nam, Cambodia, and Burma that they appreciated Japans efforts and that they too saw Japan as trying to free Asia from European Imperialism. Although I don't remember the names now, there are SE Asian leaders at the time who lead resistance movements in their countries who praised Japan, saying Japan sacrificed itself to free Asia. There seems to be a counter-history in these countries to the history of the winner, the US. We forget the evil that Europe did to Asia and the world but only remember what Japan did to the world.

It may be true in a way, but in most places most people are not news junkies and don't care about politics. I go to China and have a great time. Nobody talks about politics. And there are huge numbers of Chinese tourists in Shinjuku. For everyday Japanese, they want him to use his nationalism to hit companies over the head to raise wages and also to carry out structural reforms that will make them suffer (at least in the short term). But so far, he's pretty much got nothing. Maybe he is living the trauma when he was a kid of finding out what his grandpa did during the war. Psychoanalytical insight may be more helpful than political insights.

I don't watch anime anymore, but yes, they all seem to have high squeeky voices. Quite irritating to the ear.

Ironic, Chinese rescuing British soldiers after what the British did to the Chinese. I would not have sacrificed one Chinese life to save the British.

It's Aichi Prefecture. Some country bumpkin complained undoubetedly. Which is strange because they were all naked in public baths together, men and women, until the end of the war. This problem with nudity is a western influence. There is all kinds of nudity in Japanese art throughout its history. Also, when I was in junior high in the early 90s, we went to the Robert Maplethorp photograph exhibition here in Tokyo, and everything was out for everyone to see, and in greatly enlarged photographs. Nobody complained. I have the catalogue with all the naked genetalia. Will I be arrested?

Maybe Abe is finally getting the message that the country bumpkin popular in the farm district that elected him does not play well in the rest of Japan. It was the hope that he would use his nationalism to hit companies over the head to make them raise wages and then accept restructuring. The restructuring part drastically needed has not gotten off the ground. So people don't make children or spend money because they feel insecure.

Well, this is, after all, a survey of housewives. I was born and raised in Shinjuku, in the middle of Tokyo, and live there now. I love it (I did spend a year out of Shinjuku studying in the States). It is all a matter of taste and your lifestyle. Can't see living in a small town (like my hometown).

Six Japanese long term residents returned from China I know, and none of them said that the political situation presented problems. It was the environment. They said, independently, that the political affairs never influenced personal relationships with Chinese people.
