They save thousands of lives a year, but this is the story that makes the news. This hospital saved my life when I was a teenager when I had an acute septicemia and was close to death when I arrived there. But still, RIP to the infant.

I agree with a poster above, Thad, who says maybe someone is just trying to draw attention to Ann Frank and the Holocaust (books are the Holocaust were also damaged). Anything related to heightening of Arab/Islam profile in Japan, due to increasing dependence on oil?

It is difficult to see how someone could simply hack into and take away a billion yen and nobody noticed. Could their system have really been that vulnerable?

At least there was a happy ending and they didn't get shot up. As often seems to happen over there.

Do I understand that all 13 tons of molten metal fell on the man? Then at 1,300 degrees C, his body would have been instantly vaporized and absorbed into the metal.

And he was only 23... Probably woke up this morning, wondering about problems, family, watched some TV, what to buy for dinner, etc. just like any of us. But didn't live to see the end of the day. As they say, the next instant of our existence is not guaranteed.

Yes, "trickle-down economics". I think "tinkle down -- tinkle tinkle tinkle", the sound of urine hitting our heads. That is the right expression.

If all companies pay workers as much as they can, then workers buy lots of their products and they get the money back anyway. Thisi s "Fordism", which made the US rich from the 1920s. Until the 1980s, when "stockholder priority" became all the rage. Workers are paid next to nothing, jobs are sent overseas for cheap labor, but profits go up and stockholders are happy. Of course, since the US is dying, this party will not last much longer. Will Japan go the same way?

So Obama gave the Dalai Lama a full hour. Fine and good, but that is probably more than he has given the past 5 or 6 Japanese prime ministers all together.

Fortunately, lots of Chinese and S. Koreans don't pay any attention to these bubble heads. Still lots of tourism by them, students, marriages, etc.

Japan and China have nothing but common ground. The problem is here in Japan, where a few lame brains who make it into positions of responsibility and ruin it for everybody else (are you listening Ishihara! I mean you! And several others)

The Dalai Lama is to Obama what Yasukuni is to Abe. For China.

No matter what these idiots say, and they are idiots, the US is mainly angry that they are not being nice lap dogs that jump when you say jump and play dead when you say play dead. Biden spends an hour on the phone telling Abe not to go to Yasukuni, but he goes anyway. Too bad. Japan can get the benefits of newly found independence, and also suffer the consequences.

Food, alcohol, cocain, marijuana are all drugs that we use to deal with the tortuous boredom and vapidity of modern life ("modernity"). Plus, the main method of pressing processed food through all those machines is to load it with lard, because lard moves through the machines real fast. Strangely, Japan has a world famous food culture, and yet, obesity is rare here (although increasing over the past decade).

News reporting this morning that there is a mix-up in the photographs published in Nature. There were 10,000 photos originally, and one was printed twice. Then there is the Harvard professor whose reputation is also on the line (a man, so there will be action). He has already filed the correct photos with Nature for replacement.

Japanese can only confront their past when Europeans confront their past. Japanese Imperialism and European Imperialism are cut from the same fabric. The legacy of Imperialism has to be dealt with as a whole and a settlement must be made as a whole. It wasn't just Japan.

On the one hand, Japanese hope the strong-arm rightist Abe can use samurai patriotism to push vested interests to accept reform of the third arrow, which will make them suffer. On the other hand, considering this sort of stupid stuff, Japanese may realize what damage this is causing, and get rid of the rightists and find a better path.
