Most stores are offering 1000 yen per hour here in Shinjuku, and there are still only 2 cashiers at the registers out of 7 registers at the supermarket, with long lines. That is still not enough to pay for rent in this area, so they can't get people. It is too expensive to pay all the transportation costs to bring people in. All the cheap housing was wiped out during the bubble.

Let's have a maritime dispute, and watch all those Chinese and Korean tourists who spend billions of yen over here disappear instantly. But, I don't think Abe cares about business. He is just out to look powerful and rewrite the memory of his grand papa (class A war criminal).

And how much Japanese tax money paid by hard working Japanese are we going to lose to corrupt people over there, or governments who can't pay the loans?

It is just a way for US arms makers to get rich of the tax money of hard working Japanese. Promoting the 1% through fear mongering.

As usual, addressing the symptoms rather than the causes. That is what you get when ruled by filthy rich political families constantly re-elected by overrepresented farming villages. They understand nothing.

You have to expect that among the ever increasing millions of tourists, there will be a few bad apples. I'm sure that they weren't English teachers.

I don't understand this term "existential threat". "Existential" is a philosophy term, like "existentialism". Does that mean we all threatened with angst?

Let me just say that I'm really glad I learned English, and not just for my job. The job was a side effect, not the motivation.
Posted in: Japan, with a GDP more than 20% larger than Germany’s and with twice as many citizens as Italy has, can still thrive within its own ecosystem. Except for trade, it requires little overseas intercourse. Ill-informed (and often monolingual) foreigners ask 'Why do so few Japanese know English?' The answer is simple: They don’t need it...Mastering a complex foreign language wouldn’t be more useful to them than Japanese is to a Kansas farmer.
gokai_wo_manekuNov. 18, 2015 - 11:53AM JST
Well, from what I understand Americans don't bother to learn foreign languages either. So we have at least that in common.
gokai_wo_manekuNov. 18, 2015 - 08:00AM JST
People study language for more reasons that just to get a job. Being able to read or speak in another language broadens your horizons. So this is a kind of strange opinion coming from an educator.

Buy property in Siberia. Anyway, global culture is a "party now!" culture. We'll all be long dead when the real effects take hold. Your great grandchildren will have to deal with the mess. But nobody cares about them.

Is this all a metaphor for Japanese society? Looks great above ground, but the foundation is very weak.

@garfield, Not "perhaps", but "absolutely". But this is also rooted in his grand daddy complex.
Posted in: What do you think Japan, as a member of the international community, should do in the fight against Islamic State and other terrorist groups?

Don't touch it with billion mile stick. It doesn't involve us. This mess was entirely the making of the US and Europe. Remember Syria was occupied by France for about 30 years? I wonder what they did there. Really. It is not our mess. Don't put Japan on the terrorists map any more than Abe already has.
gokai_wo_manekuNov. 17, 2015 - 07:10AM JST
We can only thank Abe for putting Japan on the terrorist's map.
