How could I get down voted. Is there someone who thinks that war is better than sports?

I stand on my balcony, which has a nice view of downtown Tokyo, and see crane after crane. New buildings going up everywhere, and buildings are being torn down and rebuilt here in Shinjuku one after another. Yet, everything I read says that Japan is a ruined country. Does not compute, as they say.

US vs Japan. This is better than US vs Japan 70th anniversary. Sports is better than war.

It is a coup. And now China and Chinese companies will have a monopoly doing all the infrastructure development throughout developing Asian countries. Too bad for US (ie Halliburton) and Japan. Waining US influence. Get used to the new normal. I trust that when Abe and his ilk are gone Japan will do the sensible thing and join the bank.

That's what they said last year. I hope this never gets ratified by anywhere in the world. TTP means teh world is taken over by Wallstreet. Nothing else. So get ready to lose all your money.

They say it doesn't go with the taste of Japanese food? By that logic, just about everything modern will have to be removed from Japan because it "doesn't go with" Japanese culture. I suspect some nationalist sentiment is behind this.

@Todd Seiler: smoking, drinking, drugs, obesity and lots of other stuff we do is also contrary to life. Especially obesity. Have you been to the US recently? Yet, Christians say nothing about these. They are obscessed witih gays. Anyway, as a gay, I'm glad I live here in Japan. We are much more casual about it.

As people point out, Japanese debt is almost exclusively domestic. Another point is that if you net off the government's net assets, the debt to GDP ratio is more like 100%, like the US, not great but still not nearly as bad as it looks. The government's assets include all the state enterprises set up after the war and were privatized but in which the government holds a majority stake (like the trains and subways, tobacco and salt, etc etc etc.

itsonlyrocknroll, It's only "career carnage" if you don't know how to remake yourself for a new career. I'm 35 and on my third career. No problems because I took the time to figure it out. Also, where does it say she "burned bridges"? She went to Todai, so I'm sure she has the brains to remake herself into whatever she wants.

One trick pony? But she has something to fall back on: here career as an infrastructure consultant at her former firm or any other firm. Anyway, she went to Tokyo University (Todai東大, Japan's best university), so she will always have a job. And make more money than anyone. No sour grapes please.

Japan has never been Christianized. Here, gay is "hentai", a "variation". But just because something is "hentai", doesn't mean you wouldn't want to try it. Like spending an hour with a dominatrix is "hentai", but not a few guys want to try it. The notion of "gay" and "gay lifestyle" is still very vague here. A guy loves a guy rather than a girl. Well, that's "hentai", but so?
gokai_wo_manekuJun. 30, 2015 - 07:54AM JST
Hmmm, well, maybe YES to sillygirl, but it would be funnier with Japanese accented English. Her English pronunciation is too good.

Does she still perform and sing? I love her music. Wish I had gone to one of her concerts with the other guys when I studied in the US, but I'd never heard of her (late 90s).

And Abe's Abenomics is also slipping. He has not been able to face vested interests even though that is what we wanted him to do. We didn't want the militarization of Japan. Young people better get involved now that they have the vote because they are the ones that will be dying in overseas US wars.

Maybe this is why Abe is trying to distract us with all this cooperative defence and constitution reinterpretation stuff.

Gay relationships were quite popular and out in the open (featured in literature, Kabuki, ukiyoe) until modernization=western influences. Ironically, now due to western influences, maybe they will be back!

Don't forget that the Shibuya district in Tokyo created a "partnership" category for gays, which is a legally recognized partnership in Shibuya district. Gays can rent a room together etc. I'm still waiting for Shinjuku district, where I live with my partner, to provide the same.

The problem is that in the US, even if they have high speed rail between cities, once you get to your destination, there is no mass transit to get you around the city, like in Japanese cities. And Americans are just tied to the "freedom" of going where you want when you want.
Posted in: Popular elsewhere, high-speed rail remains elusive in U.S.
