The US elites want only what is good for them, no matter how it impacts elsewhere. I echo the opinion that the yen is high only because the US is so completely dismal, but I would add that Japan is truely great. Just returned from the US. Yep, soft, soft, soft.

Speaking of apologies, the article says they were defending a "British colony". What were the British doing there in the first place? The British were one of the imperialist powers that had taken over China ("The sun never sets on the British Empire"). Have the British ever apologized for what they did to China? It is the height of hypocracy for British to demand apologies from the Japanese, when they owe China a big apology.

Another sign of the very deep moral decline of the US. There is no way to save the US (ie Americans) now. Protect yourself.

tkoind2, there was a time when Hollywood movies dominated Japanese theaters, maybe even 10 years ago. The problem is that they became too "one-pattern", they are all the same, and Japanese got bored with them. You know: shooting, car chase, sex, shooting, the end. They are all to predictable. Anyway, talk about "nuanced" translation is superfluous when every other word if the f-word. With most movies, you could substitute random sequence of sentences for dialogue and it would make must as much sense. Movies today are total crap.

Well, when I was in the US last week, the big news was about a 51 year old actor marrying a 16 year old rising singer whose father was 41. The father said something like "it's great he is behind her". Now really, Britney Spears can get married for one night in Las Vegas and divorced the next day. And the divorce rate? Especially in the Bible Belt? Jesus did condemn divorce but said nothing about gays. Who is ruining marriage as you know it? Straights. Shinjukuboy (full disclosure: gay)

Lady Gaga has donated 1 million of her own money to quake relief according to CNN. I'm really sure she is trying to rip off buyers of her wrist band...(sarcasm intended).

Moderators: This is Shinjukuboy. This is the first time I have posted since the makeover, and I get my really old name "gokai wo maneku", which I shared with an ex (and the bad memories). How do I get Shinjukuboy back?

I'd say he looks a lot better as a she. That kind of face on a guy could be pretty tough.

Would I go out on a date? Humm.... Yeah.

But isn't Yoshinoya one of those places you have to buy the tickets in the machine in order to eat? I haven't eaten there in a long time and may be confusing it with another chain.

Earlier this year, a 17 year old wrestler died (was killed) when beat by his stablemates and stablemaster. He reportedly wanted out. Was anyone kicked out because of this? Not that I have heard of.

In any society where one group (an elite) outlaws things wanted by the majority - drugs, sex, gambling -, people will appear who will supply the service. The yakuza, mafia, or whatever would all disappear if these were made legal. Whether legal or illegal, the same people will use drugs, for example. It is not like every single person in the world will get hooked on drugs if they are legalized. If we were all hooked on drugs we couldn't make war, but that is another story...

They do realize, don't they, that they have lost about 30% of their potential audience by not sending the stars. Great loss of buzz. It may be hard to imagine, the SSC is not that well known here in Japan, even in Tokyo. Only one season of the show aired on CS TV, which you don't get without a subscription. Anyway, I only watched 3 shows and couldn't get into it. As an asside, Field doesn't look very 41, and not in the good way, and Horiko does not look very 31, but in a good way.

True, they may have played in tiny, hole-in-the-wall clubs, but that kind of venue is where the Beatles started. Not that I'm a fan in particular...

Acting immature? She's only 15. You're supposed to be immature, by definition. Well, I agree, she'll have a career on her own. Ganbatte!

Well, finally an issue that Americans can get their minds around! This story will be around for weeks. Other issues like national debt, trade deficites, imploding banks, subprime loans are just to big for the average American mind.
