RR, I have already focused on this article. I just think that if you are going to quote statistics you should back them up with a valid reference. I am not the only one who has requested your sources. Besides you were the one keeping the thread going by stating that Google is your friend. Then when challenged on that you insult me. So typical.

    SS3: Google is your friend.

When you grow up and go to college is that what you are going to write in the footnotes when your professors ask for references?

Figures you would expect the reader to look up your resources. Or maybe you don't think your sources could stand up to public scrutiny?

If it does pass the House and the Senate tries to revise much of it, it will end up in a procedural fight. The referee, if you will, will be a Senate Parliamentarian. If it passes the House, it WILL go to reconciliation. The man who will figure out how the rules are interpreted will be Alan S. Frumin. I hope we get that far. The procedural fights will be extremely interesting.

SushiSake3, c'mon I think we know he really meant 750% of Americans.

    It ain't over yet!

I think failure to pass this legislation will hurt the Democrats. I also think passing it will hurt some Democrats in the fall. However I think the party gets the most damage from failure to pass this legislation.

In a related statement the Vatican on Sunday denied that the priests and other clergy ever think about sex after taking their vows.

If gays and lesbians are allowed to serve openly in the military then they will require separate facilities just as is the case currently for men and women. Or else put gays in the womens facilities and lesbians with the men. Otherwise, it wouldn't make sense to keep men and women separate either. There should be no separation what-so-ever. No mens and womens bathrooms, no separate bathrooms and showers.

    Talk about dumb ideas.

even at their most inept of Mossad operations has never been this stupid, not by a very long way.

What are you blind to history? In 1997 Mossad attempted to assassinate Hamas leader Khaled Mashaal in Jordan. This was under under orders from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Not only did they not complete their mission, Jordanian authorities arrested two Mossad agents. Benjamin Netanyahu was embarrassed into turning over the antidote for the nerve toxin used on Khaled Mashaal.

I just got sick and tired of hearing grafton try to claim it could not have been Mossad because they don't screw up that badly. I am not claiming Mossad assassinated Mahmoud al-Mabhouh. I am simply saying that grafton's premise of Mossad never being so stupid is dead wrong. History bears this out.

    ca1ic0cat,

I had no idea when you quoted "if you tell a lie often enough people will begin to believe it is the truth" that you planned to practice it as a principle.

Guys, you forgot that the dems caved to Liebermann and so they had their 60 votes

I did not forget anything. I remember you said "The democrats had a "fillibuster proof" 60 vote majority in the senate for a year and couldn't get anything done" and you were wrong. That is what I correctly pointed out and you can't admit it.

So go drink your own goddamn koolaid because you pissed in it good.

At this point it would be very gratifying for the House to pass the bill already passed by the U.S. Senate. He just needed to make them look like fools at the summit first. He was very successful.

zurcronium's comment was not up yet when I was writing my comment. Sorry for duplicating stuff.

I have the two independents listed as Bernie Sanders (VT) and Joe Lieberman (CT).

no matter how trivial -- has to be passed with 60 votes." I don't get that. Why 60? why not 51?

Both houses are able to make their own rules on how they conduct matters. The Senate started with unlimited debate. Then in 1917, senators adopted a rule (Rule 22), at the urging of President Woodrow Wilson, that allowed the Senate to end a debate with a two-thirds majority vote, a device known as "cloture." In 1975, the Senate reduced the number of votes required for cloture from two-thirds to three-fifths, or 60 of the current one hundred senators.

So to answer skip's question of why 60 votes and not 51 votes: it is a U.S. Senate rule (Rule 22) to limit debate or to end never ending debate. It is 60 because they have reduced from 2/3 which was 66 or 67 (I don't know which was actually needed) to 3/5 which is exactly 60 votes.

ca1ic0cat, the Democrats never had a 60 vote majority as was explained earlier in this thread. Like you quoted "if you tell a lie often enough people will begin to believe it is the truth."

I don't get it, he doesn't need the repubs to pass it. What is the hold up?

    MrUSA -

The Democrats control the white house, and both houses of congress. Why don't they just pass the legislation they want to? They don't need the Republicans approval for anything.

The U.S. Senate has passed a bill. The House could try to pass that bill unchanged. But otherwise they need at least one Republican to vote against a filibuster. Those votes are called "cloture votes." In other words the Democrats need 60 votes in the Senate to pass anything that the Republicans reject.

I would also like to add my voice to the others who have served in the military that I served with people I knew were gay. I am an Air Force veteran. Gays were never a problem when I was serving with them.

Molenir, were you in the military?

A gay person may be doing their best to hide any activity and never mention it to a soul and they can be dishonorably discharged.

    should read

A gay person may be doing their best to hide any gay activity and never mention it to a soul or never mention they are gay to anyone and they can be dishonorably discharged.

is that really so discriminatory? They can serve, so long as they don't shove their business into other peoples face.

Gays are currently not allowed to have any gay sex if they are in the U.S. military. Heterosexuals are allowed to have sex. That is blatant discrimination and that is what I was talking about.

    Here is the actual law:

    http://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/10/654.html

It is not simply not talking about being a homosexual or homosexual acts they were involved in as Molenir tried to portray it. When Molenir states, "They can serve, so long as they don't shove their business into other peoples face" he is wrong as seems to be commonplace on these boards. A gay person may be doing their best to hide any activity and never mention it to a soul and they can be dishonorably discharged.

Don't ask, don't tell works. Aside from this, the generals can't lift the ban, nor can Obama, it would take an act of congress to do so. Something that many would oppose, on both sides of the aisle. I'm not seeing this happening any time soon.

It does not work. It is discrimination. Everyone can see that except the homophobes. Dick Cheney endorses a repeal of DADT. Molenir wants to force his religion on everybody else. So because of these people with archaic thought processes gays in the military have to worry about being harassed and endangered of being separated from their service to our country.

When Dick Cheney supports gays in the military it is time to make it the law of the land. I want to see him use his influence for good for a change.
