a lot of nails getting hit on the head in this discussion. my 2c:

it's a problem pretty much everywhere on this planet, especially industrialised nations, but especially so in japan: people don't learn to live. they're taught to fit into a social role but they're never taught how to actually live a life, or rather pointed in the direction whereby they can learn it for themselves. so it's no surprise that people don't know how to enjoy the simple things in life (sex, for example). to do that would detract from their proscribed social role

but, as i said, this is not only japan, but seems to be a particularly developed affliction there

this is inevitably going to turn into a fairly ugly PR incident for japan

for those that want the cover girl the cables used to hold her vertical come separately!

so she'd have to be entirely horizontal? i think that was their intent anyway

If I buy the magazine, do I get the girl on the front cover as a gift?

perhaps the publishers are hoping that you think you will

can someone please remind me of the nihongo word for this kind of thing: translates a bit like "keeping up appearances", begins with 見, i believe. i read about it in a book some time ago and forgot the word. it explains (or at least accounts for) much of this bizarre behaviour

Wrong, the patrol cars also say "POLICE" in letters bigger than the Japanese writing. And the reason? The J authorities are scared sh*tless of having us all here.

don't be silly. police is in the international lexicon with words like ok, yes & no. police in many countries use the english unless it's languages where the native word is more or less the same

    makes perfect sense

we're not learning, we just keep on burning

yes... this is certainly a cultural tendency with a very marked upside and downside

america became unattractive when it decided to stop welcoming outsiders for the talent they could bring, in favour of protecting against the "danger" that they might bring... this change of focus will be its inevitable downfall

Just another soul being used by the media. This happens to be a person who at first was ridiculed by her first appearance on TV and then when they heard her voice they realised that here was another cash machine.

watch the video again, you can practically see the dollar signs flashing in front of cowell's eyes

unless, of course, she's just living her life, in which case i'm in search of her phone number

such a shame that air pollution so often obstructs views in the tokyo area. on a clear winter's day, the flatness of the kanto plain allows for wonderful views of the surrounding mountains if you can get up a little from street level

i always hoped to be up the tocho on a particularly clear day but was never lucky enough, unfortunately
