Is it about 15 years after Daiichi and Fuji merged that they are now consolidating operations? Must be the slowest merge on record?

I think these stories actually validate the foreign media perception of placid Japanese. Nothing big here, nothing you wouldn't see anywhere else in the world at non-crisis times.

On a Sunday afternoon? I guess there is a wider term of commuting that means just being on a train but the regular colquialism means one who travels to and from work.

Wow - just saw the TV advert which ends with a baby sucking on Oshima's right boob. Gone through the bottom of the barrel now, this really does seem to have gone a little ott.

@tmarie -wasn't me who did the thumbs down BTW, don't use them-
Anyway, the comparison to LH is interesting. I flew LH from LHR to NRT via FFT a few years back and was horrified at the service between LHR and FFT. I paid business, but that segment (LHR-FFT) was economy seating with no discernable difference between business and economy whatsoever (and there were a number of us complaining). Not even free newspapers. For the FFT-NRT section, LH couldn't seat my wife and I together despite booking months in advance (told we couldn't pre-reserve seats - daft!). I complained bitterly to LH HQ, and they sent two free teacups! I have flown LH again since then and the service very good (pity, was hoping to build up a good tea set!).
I think the moral of the story is that sometimes you are lucky, sometimes not. The best for me so far between Europe and Japan has been Austrian. Really great service, good seats, everything I needed to arrive fresh. But since I have only flown them once, I could have been just lucky, right?

@piglet
But having said that, two similar segments Paris-Marseille and Tokyo-Osaka cost almost the same. Japan comes up more slightly more expensive because of currency conversion, if the exchange rate was above 90Y/$ it would be cheaper (was converting via USD)

I think all intra-europe airlines are like that - it is just a 3 hour flight though, right? The planes were A320's and certainly not old. The long haul section had full VOD, and the food was a sandwich, which was all I needed having gorged on the previous long haul segment. Economy was as good as any other airline (who really shines in Economy??). I did the same journey as you (but last year), and actually found the break at Helsinki quite welcome. Just 40 mins, then back on for the hop to London. Kids enjoyed it too. Coming back was a 100min break which was less fun, but had a chance to buy some funky omiyage at THE shop in the airport (yes it is small).
I did use direct flights this year, but only as I got a great deal, otherwise I'd very likely be using Finnair again.

More likely pressure from people in Tokyo with nothing better to do than worry about radiation.
The food is supposed to be being tested at source, so what will this achieve? If it finds anomalies, then the whole system is screwed. Not against it, just questioning the value.

Please check your source again (or quote it here so I can compare apples/apples). Also, I noted the biggest cost difference was currency, but foreign firms are capitalising on that to make more profit. If they reduced prices they could probably clean up the market.

They might want to coiunt their blessings that import cars are taxed even more heavily and that overseas manufacturers are even more greedy.
A few years back whne UK/JP exchange rate was closer to 200, the cheapest Mini in UK was about the equivalent of 2.3mio yen. Is was being sold in Japan for over 2.5mio yen. Now with the exchange rate at 125 it is still around the 2.5/2.8 mark, but the equivalent cost has dropped to 1.5 mio yen. Mini won't drop price because they "want to protect the brand value" of being a prestige car! Hmmm - lost opportunity? But at least it save the Japan auto industry.

Agreed - but seems to be the norm here. She is not my cup of tea, but no reason to doubt she is sick - not as if the hall was emtpy!
I think people post the cruel stuff here because there is no comback, but they would never say it to the persons face - kind of cowardly.

150~180 on an A320 is the range you can put in (of course, you could do even less), you can imagine the effect that all those seats would have on the interior!!!

I wonder if they wil change the lanscape in the way that easyJet and Ryanair did in Europe? When these two first started, you could really pick up very cheap flights (UK-> Spain for 5,000 yen one way inclusive of all taxes, etc). It really was a case of "where do I want to go today?". Now, especially Ryanair, there are so many hidden costs that it doesn't seem that much cheaper than the main line carriers. They do serve interesting locations though. The fact that ANA are running it would suggest they hope to cash in on the LCC boom fils me with doubt that it will be much cheaper than exisitng fares. Add to this, the millstone of huge airport charges in Japan and I doubt if we will ever get dirt cheap travel, sadly!
