The court ruling said the duo hid evidence tampering by a subordinate during a postal system abuse probe to protect themselves and the integrity of their office.

Well that makes sense. Lets lie to protect our integrity?

“Our Christian community needs concerted action to stop young people from being infected with homosexuality and pornography,”

"Infected"? Jeez, thinly veiled homophobia. Actually not very thinly veiled. And the larger Korean community allows this bigotry?

Well, an interesting twist you introduce. I said...

Do you think the execution system is infallable?

    and you replied

Do you think the life in prison system is infallible?

OK, now consider that if you were wrongly convicted, wrongly sentenced, which of this options would allow you the opportunity of recourse? Well a posthumous pardon may be nice?

The underlying issue of a very "lax" legal system is only the beginning of why the death sentence should never be allowed here, so please don't bleat on about the difference of the value of the life of an infant vs the value of the life of an adult. If killing is wrong, it is wrong, full stop. There can be no exceptions.

As I have said, I think a life in prison in a tiny cell is an extremely cruel and barbaric punishment. It would, I believe, drive almost anyone crazy.

So perhaps I should say that I wish those gentlemen running things here would... ahem ... not carry on for much longer.

    :) Amen to that!

@choiwaruoyaji What zichi mentions is not just for convicts, but for suspects too. If you have been arrested, you are placed in a similar environment to what he describes and denied access to family. The goal is to force a confession, and works in many cases. The suspect are told to sign a paper that will let them back on the street UNDER EXTREME PRESSURE, and with denial of basic human rights. Lets assume that some suspects are guilty, so good job, right? But sadly not all are, and there are some recent cases where people have FINALLY been released before execution after decades. Say for a moment that they were executed, is that OK? Do you think the execution system is infallable? Are mistakes acceptable?

I love how a photograph of Japanese people ignoring a no smoking sign proves to some people that Japanese people are considerate and well-mannered.

Many ways to look at the picture, including 1) Signs generally indicate the start of a restricted zone (e.g. speed signs parking restrictions, etc) and since all the people are to the left of the sign and the sign is facing left, you can assume they are not in the restricted area. 2) A slightly weaker argument I admit, but signs only work if you see them. None of these people are looking at the sign! If the whole area was really non smoking as opposed to the sign indicating the start of restricted area, there would be signs everywhere. Once again, they are safe.

I'm very anti-smoking, but the defence is partially due to the inference that a nation is rude and rule breaking.

Hey, a picture of people breaking the law and their faces aren't mosaic'd!!

Smoking IS bad for you, so making it hard to do is not a bad thing. How long before everyone is weened off the addiction?

Strange logic. You killed someone, killing is wrong. As punishment, we will kill you, but killing you isn't wrong.

Meanwhile, Shizuka Kamei, the leader of the DPJ’s junior coalition People’s New Party, said that if the cabinet approves the revised bill, he will have no choice but to pull his party out of the coalition, NHK reported.

Given the added value he (Kamei) brings, that is probably a bonus, but if getting the bill through depends on his support then Noda will be in sheepdip.

Kamei wants to spend all the tax revenues for the next 10 years within the next 10 months (and all in the regions, not metropolis), so probably best to cut him off now.

hundreds of billions of dollars into the US car industry, and the US finance industry

    It was hundreds of billions.

ML BoA? AIG? Fannie Mae? Freddie Mac? Lehman Bros?

Point is, an awful lot of money got moved around to support domestics. Lets also remember that the Japanese support quoted here is in JPY, approximately 1/80th of the USD numbers quoted for US firms.

This is interesting, being complicit in hiding one of the most wanted people in Japan results in just 14 months? I know she didn't do any of the terror deeds herself, but she must have known who he was, etc. I guess the surprise is also at such a fast sentence, seems like only last week she gave herself up, but sentenced already.

@photoman I think there is confusion between being government owned and funding being sourced by tax payers. Similar views on the reasons US government pumped hundreds of billions of dollars into the US car industry, and the US finance industry. National pride? Or was it an election year? Maybe both? UK too, government owns RBS which is losing money, doesn't mean the money is tax revenue, but it does mean the government stake in RBS will drop in value (but don't worry, despite losing money, bonuses will still be paid out).

@gogogo - you'd think so wouldn't you. Letting companies fail would weed out the bad performers, American Airlines is one I wish would die quickly instead of trying to come out of Chapter 11. It could unload the people who are happy to get high salaries, but not happy to provide higher service. Similarly, Elpida should have diversified long ago.

    @darren

Why is he talking to the Diet? I don't get it. Becaused they summoned him.

I may have missed the Japanese on the live broadcast yesterday, but I think there might be two inaccuracies in the report:

The president of a company at the center of scandal in which 109.2 billion yen of pension fund cash was lost said on Tuesday he was sorry but did not explain how he might get the money back.

This is not something he can explain as he can't get the money back. With so much gone, he'd have to be an incredibly amazing investor to bring all the lost value back. He did mention he would transfer the remaining value of the funds back in an "equitable" way, so the funds that lost money will get the remaining money back.

Asakawa said he wanted to visit the homes of all investors and apologize, repeating that he had no intention to deceive them. The inference I heard was taht he would visit each of the funds to apologise (1件、1件), not the homes of the contributors.

Basically he lacked remorse and looked like a gambling addict. There has to be a HUGE question mark over the role of the auditors (internal and external) as well as the role of the Trustee of the assets.

As for not wishing to deceive anyone, well writing 250% increase of value of a fund in black and white is a pretty good indicator of intent to deceive.

I don't think there will be many "cronies" for him to call on, it will be "go to jail, move directly to jail, do not pass "go", do not collect GBP200"!

The Republicans are very good at this, wasn't it Reagan who said "We have just passed a bill that outlaws the Soviet Union, we begin bombing in 5 minutes" on an open mic?

I think Medvedev handled it well, and Romney just looks even smaller than he did before (which is difficult, frankly).
