@7777777 I beg you to buy a copy of the Big Issue next time you see one - judge by the content if it is a worthwhile cause or not. They have managed to get people back on their feet in the UK. It really is a good setup and worth the effort with follow up support. I was so happy to see them start up here (Tokyo). I agree with you that there people out there taking advantage, but I truly believe this is not one of those schemes. http://www.bigissue.com/How_We_Work_14.php

Ahh, 7777777, that is a pity, as these people often don't have the choice of turning down 10 yen. But this is not exploitation, and moreover, it is not a handout. Also, it is not the City providing the money, it is the magazine "Big Issue". Giving homeless people money is not the answer, giving them a chance to get on their feet is. Sure, selling one magazine won't help, but how many can they sell? How many have you bought? It is a good read, and some very good articles in it, always a famous name on the cover. The side business of town guides can reallyhelp their self esteem if nothing else. The lack of feeling they are needed by society is also a big part of their burden. I say give it a chance to succeed. Can't hurt can it?

@majimekun It is an attempto give them a broader chance to gain income. Although technically unpaid, they can gain commission on sales of "Big Issue" which is actually a good read. They wouldn't get this platform (which will provide some warmth) without tourist board and local government support. It isn't a handout, and the people involved will need to have some drive to be successful. As for English, hmmm - maybe you are right, Chinese and Korean would also be useful. I guess they should also have a background as a Somellier too so they can direct us to the best restaurants serving the best wine?
Its a start, lets give them a break, no-one else is bothering.

@godan -
Thats the goal, but your last line would indicate it might be more difficult than people believe. Give them a chance!

Not exactly true - these new planes are vastly more fuel efficient (18-20%) and will REPLACE existing equipment as opposed to provide new routes. By being late, they are wasting a lot of fuel - sad, but true.

Vessel in the fog! It came back last year, then went away again.
Recent observations for me centered on "Salty Nuts" which I thought I would bring back to UK as gifts - "Would you like some Salty Nuts?". Now gone though - missed opportunty.

Nah, don't like the name. What about the ocean and the air, or the mountains? We might upset other parts of the earth with the choice of "sky" so why not just call it a "holiday tree"?

@warnerbro - thats my point. The region is quite hilly and the flat places left for building are minimal due to 1) being used as places to store gareki, 2) used for emergency temporary housing, 3) not really fit to build on, or no-one wants to live there again (shoreline, etc). Hence move the gareki is the one os themain things that can help start the rebuilding process.

Considered that you might have actually got it wrong? Worth thinking about.
Miyagi is nearly as far away from Fukushima as Tokyo is. It may have a higher radiation reading than Tokyo due to wind direction, etc. Even so, it is still less than HK and less than NY and a whole lot less than some areas of SW UK. Time to move in to the 21 Century and away from the 1950's paranoia of Cold War Nuclear War contamination - things are not that bad.

It is actually in the way of reconstruction. It is occupying some of the flat places need to start rebuilding homes. It can't stay there, and would take years to build the facilities to process it in that region, after which they would be redundant. It makes sense to process it in ways that are productive and time effective. I don't believe the risk is going to be significant (and remember, you can't actually hide radiation).
It isn't a case of sharing pain, there is no real pain in doing this, not realistically.

Hopefully that will keep cost down?
This is gareki from tsunami - not from around vicinity of Fukushima reactors. People know that, right?

Although this seems perfectly logical, if the Christians hadn't celebrated Christmas using the tree as a part of that celebration then by default, there wouldn't be a tree to call either Christmas or Holiday. So, it IS a Christmas tree. The discussions about it being used for commercial purposes are a different debate I believe?

The debris isn't from Fukushima, it has been (and is being) measured and monitored, and is so high profile that ANY deviance would result in uproar. Of the 60 residents that turned up (out of seevral hundred thousand) not ALL were critical (not sure how "many" would be in this case).
Seems that most people actually get it.

Absolutely - wasn't there a case where and Oxfam shop in UK was asked to remove it's Christmas display as it might offend the local population. Sadly I can't find the article anymore, but a prime example of PC actually being completely un-PC.

If this is the case, and if he really believes in diversity, then why not celebrate it instead of dumbing it down??
Me, I can't wait to see the Holiday Bamboo at the office entrance this year (kadomatsu)!

What is unfortunate here, is that expats (by and large) receive a per diem payment for their daily expenses. So actually they might be a bit sore about the amount left over after they have used the per diem! Tough life?
