    @GW - I really really wanted that to be true. As an aside, keeping the plight of these people in the spotlight IS good. But look at people like 柴咲コウ (who I don't specifically like) to see ways it can be done a bit more selflessy - no press, just a follow up article with pix from peoples mobile phones.

    I'd have been happy if the story was just that she did some (hopefully free) concerts for people in shelters. Adding that she arrived in an 11t truck with rice makes it sound so disingenuous (unless of course she was either driving it or was reading the maps, or perhaps paying for teh rice or transportation).

    What could have been a good deed does indeed sound like a PR stunt. And I would have respected her even more if it wasn't actually reported!

    Seeing this drink machine on the train just disgusts me. As if we don't have enough vending machines throughout the country already. How about a vertical bike rack? That's going to bring more money to a tourist area than a drink machine.

    Bike bags are good - a bit of extra work but you can then go just about anywhere, even on crowded commuter trains at a pinch! Give it a go!

    Hmm, Yakuza have been known to demand money to NOT create disruption at shareholder meetings and AGM's but the amounts here are a bit large for that, unless it has just snowballed out of control. I guess there could be other reasons so interested to see what the committee / SFO / Police / FSA all come up with. With so many investigations the chance of the truth remaining hidden is very small, as the stakes for not revealing are now so high.

    Hawks win Japan Series with 3-0 shutout of Dragons in game 7 Showing my ignorance here as I don't know much about baseball. I thought it was 4-3 and not 3-0 (my logic being 4+3=7). Saw some of the games. Was surprised that Chunichi didn't capitalise on their home advantage having beaten the Hawks on their home turf.

    I don't think the general public will see any increase except where direct and sustained exposure occured. In and around Fukushima could see some increase. As the article suggests, there will be more long term effects from stress than there would be from radiation.

    Even the fact that the schools need radiation monitors seems to me to be reason enough to move to another prefecture. Preferably one upwind and over mountains.

    Who says they do "need" them? There are other detection programs that are ongoing that can cover the role, this one is to help put parents at ease - sad that they will now not feel at ease for a few more months.

    Agree with a lot being said here. When asking for messages to be translated into Japanese I usually ask for the content to be rewritten for Japanese as opposed to translated. That involves the cultural element to be considered too. It works both ways of course, and when people write (or ask face to face) for me to co-operate with them, it used to have me scratching my head as that is what work colleagues would normally do (asking for it infers they are scared it might not be there, etc). But they were just translating (ご協力お願いします) which doesn't culturally translate well (directly).

    The whole concept of wearing fur just seems really outdated & thoughtless.

    Agree 5,000% I thought it had been passed through the "tasteful" machine and came out negative years ago. It is quite surprising to see it come back. Not exactly progress!

    @Nicky again.

    And I have no problem with people like the inuit who use fur as a necessity. But expensive fur as a fashion statement and nothing else - it just grates on me. if that makes me hypocritical then I guess I am a hypocrite!

    To be clear, I am with you in that hypocritical boat. I can't quite get my head clear on this one.

    zichi - to answer your question very little I think. I dont know so correct me if I am wrong but does leather come from animals bred for meat anyway? Whereas fur is raised only for fashion?

    And what is the difference between being bred for meat as opposed to being bred for fashion?

    I'm not against you BTW, but it does pose some serious questions for me. I eat a lot of meat, wear leather clothes and shoes but think fur is awful. I should be one side or the other so I somehow feel disempowered to say how bad she looks becasue of the fur. That would be hypocritical, right?

    You'd think Australia/NZ would be first, but I guess that as they have some pretty good wines themselves, they don't need to 'celebrate'? ;) Then again, the chance of cheap drink at about midnight might keep the party fires burning a bit longer into the wee hours?

    @Netnin

    Enough banter, the bottom line is this. Japan cheats. It's not free trade. This is a country that hungers for variety and Deep Pocket lobbyists make sure they can't get it.

    There is no pent up demand for US cars here, that is the bottom line. European makers are doing well because the cars they offer in the segments they offer them are better than the local sourced cars. That IS free trade isn't it? US cars can't sell here because they just don't appeal, that is also free trade.

    @zichi

    BTW America builds many great cars.

    I think 'many' might be stretching it, but there are definitely some. The Corvette rocks, and for some reason I really like the look of the Dodge Challenger (too much 'Dukes of Hazzard' as a kid)? But these are niche cars, and the focus is (or should be) on mainstream stream volume cars. In that category it is hard to think of anything notable. As I said earlier though, Ford in Europe is hugely successful - how can the DNA be so different?

    That is downright backwards. I'm trying to be nice but that is insane. America builds cars for all conditions.

    I know how difficult Japan makes it for America to export their vehicles to Japan. You've always been scared of competition.

    You know how to entertain us :)

    1st experience - rental car from Philadelphia airport (GM something - can't remember model): Light switch came off in hand, car wouldn't start for 4-5 minutes, and really uncomfortable.

    2nd experience in Guam - Ford Mustang. Amazing technology. It's steering and braking system was engineered by a clever set of linked sponges that completely removed all road feel and made steering closer to steering a boat with a rudder. Braking was interesting.

    Other examples too, but I think the point is clear. Most motoring journalists laugh at US cars, that says a lot.

    Thats what I think about when in Yoshinoya, browsing on my Toshiba, wearing my Edwins! :)

    Ford make class leading cars of such a value/quality proposition that they top the sales charts - but in Europe! Ford of Europe really excels at providing the mass market with cars that are better than avergae, and desirable to a certain degree (depth of pocket permitting). They outsell their Japanese equivalents significantly.

    Sadly though, Ford chooses to ignore these cars in favour of the cars built/sold in America (North and South) that don't have such an appeal and are often outsold by their Japanese branded (may have been built in US) equivalents.

    I would love the chance to have an S-Max here. A driveable people carrier!

    Nothing makes me laugh more though, than seeing left hand drive Rolls Royces, Jaguars, Bentleys and Aston Martins. How daft is that?

    As of yet, I don't recall seeing Tanigaki actually stating whether he is for or against TPP. Just claiming that Noda is not revealing all he should about TPP and expressing his opposition of joining TALKS on TPP. If anyone needs to be censured, it is Tanigaki.

    Jeez, why not actually start saying what you will do for Japan as opposed to arguing against everything the current government does? Time for a change - the opposition needs to go!!
