I believe the Shinto/Judaism connection to be accurate. Especially after spending time in China and seeing the similarities between the ancient religion of the Chinese aristocracy and Judaism and the recent finds of Jewish artifacts in northern China. That religion has connections with the Shinto traditions however not until after perversion of allowing deification due to the pressure of the ruling class some 2000 years ago.
Buddhism is not the religion of Japan. That is Shinto. It is not a Buddhist ritual that deifies the Emperor, it is Shinto. Buddhism was embraced by the ruling class in Japan as a means to control the lower classes. Christianity was indeed driven out of Japan but it was by the monks that pressured the leadership starting with Toyotomi. They feared the loss of their status more than anything else.
It is nonsense to say that Japan is better off for having cleansed the country of Christianity. Buddhism has been instrumental in propagating a class based society that has survived even until today. Christianity brought freedom and a sense of class mobility to the peasants and that meant that the monks would loose their status pure and simple.
Finally, one can not judge a religion by the resultant offshoots that may or may not bear a resemblance to the original teachings. Siddhartha would be appalled at what is passed off as Buddhism in Japan today and Jesus would be equally as appalled at what the Conquistadors did in His name.
The people that died clinging to their faith and peacefully seeking a better life and society deserve to be recognized and I applaud the efforts of the Japanese church that persevered to receive that recognition.

As a professional salesman with 30 years of experience, I can assure you that this person is only selling his service and blowing his own horn.
Cold calling works period.
I can remember when I sold automobiles in the states. The number one GM auto salesman for that year... I think it was '85 if I remember was blind. All he did to achieve that success was to work... out of the phone book.... 2 hours a day... everyday. The rest of his time was spent 'showing' cars to prospects that he earned cold calling.
Of course he had superb product knowledge, and had the additional burden of having to walk the lot each morning with the lot boy, marking out the models along with color and installed options and accessories because he had to have it all memorized due to his lack of sight.
In the end, people will believe exactly what they want to believe so all you new sales recruits take your pick. Burn weeks and weeks on research that may or not pay out over a few clients.... or wear out those shoes 'n make those calls the old fashioned way and spend your nights learning your product inside and out and practicing your pitch in front of the mirror until you have your 6 canned pitches so well tuned they show up in your dreams each night.
Myself? I retired at 35 but missed making those calls so much I have been at it ever since ; )

Yeah, it would be rockin' to see all those goomba U.S. auto makers fold and take down all the related industries with them like electrical, engineering, steel : ) Then the only people with jobs in the U.S. will be tenured teachers n public employees... That should set the stage for a solid economic upturn.
I would buy a chevy caprice wagon or a suburban here like I had back in the states if it would fit down my street ; )

I think it is just great that so many of the girls dress like whores. Everyone has a different function in life. Some are doctors and scientists and some are for entertainment. Everybody knowing their place and doing a good job at it is what makes the world go round. It would be a boring world with no flowers to brighten up our days.

Though new to Japan, the concept of foodbanking is spreading.
Kozmoz International operates a food bank in the Kansai area collecting foodstuffs from manufacturers and distributors and distributes it to orphanages, drug and alcohol rehabilitation center, DV crisis centers and of course homeless groups.
In spite of the all the glitter, Japan has a poverty rate of over 15 percent. That means that 1 out of 8 people you see today could benefit from that food. The ability to reduce that waste and put it to proper use to provide food security to those that need it is limited mainly by a lack of manpower. http://kozmoz.jp

Well, those boys chose their careers, they can always change if they feel underpaid. The natural economic pressures will solve the situation. The stable owners will exert as much pressure as possible to keep their costs down, however their fat wallets are filled on the back of the rikishi so in the end, they will cave.

I have only lived in America, Mexico, and Japan and my observations regarding the 'domestic competence quotient' of young women are as follows. Sorry to be so chauvinistic but since I date only women, my sample group is limited accordingly.
Half of American girls can cook a weeks variety of fairly healthy meal.
Nearly all Mexican girls are able to feed themselves or a family.
Japanese girls are so far down statistically as to not even register. I am a hound, you might say a horrible man who has dated more than a hundred girls here in Japan. In my defense, it has been in search of the girl of my dreams... which would include being able to share the cooking chores. Even the best cook that I have run across could not make a meal without ketchup or mayo. And I dont mean as a seasoning : )
I did break down and marry last year. At the 'one time cooking class' provided for new moms at the health center, only one lady out of the 20 that was there had even the faintest idea how to prepare a meal. My bride excels in other areas so I am fine with doing 99% of the cooking. After a year, she has mastered instant ramen, and can smash bananas and rice for our love child and is now able to make reasonably edible curry rice and okonomiyaki which she dutifully cooks the one day a week when I get home late. She beams with pride at my praise each week : )
My conclusions? Japanese do not value domestic competence in either men or women. They value men that will not complain about working overtime without compensation in the name of 'team spirit' and girls that look good in a school uniform and will suffer sexual harassment on the job in relative silence until they get married. If that changes, so will the number of young that can make their own hamburgers.

Most companies offer excellent maternity leave plans. My wife is right now on a one year leave where she receives a percentage of her normal salary, and her insurance is paid by the company for one year. I am always amazed at the comments I read here about Japans welfare and family aid system being inadequate. To the contrary, they have an exemplary system sans something similar to America guaranteeing medical care at the emergency room for those that fall thru the cracks. Of course there are lacks, but no more than any other industrial country.
The single largest barrier to people considering continuing a pregnancy to term in Japan is financial. Period. We have the highest cost of living on the planet and insurance does not cover any prenatal nor pregnancy related treatment or procedures. A payment of aprox. 3000 dollars is available upon live birth from the local government and babies receive practically free medical care and day care is provided on a sliding scale affordably.
However, being as the vast majority of pregnancies are in new and young couples, having to bear the entire cost of prenatal and birth costs in addition to loosing an income and the additional expenses that bringing a baby into the world mean that receiving a lump sum payment of aprox. 1/3 their expenses is not very attractive. Not to mention the risks that costs could be much higher if there are any complications.
Being as the cost of living wont change anytime soon, the simplest way to increase the birthrate is to include maternity related health care in insurance benefits. Even at a partial rate it would ease enough pressure to dramatically increase the birthrate. Any additional incentives available upon live birth will also have very little effect.
