life's hard and then you die. she led a charmed life for plenty of time to sock away some dough. I do think that she was treated ridiculously with the whole drug thing but to insinuate that she has money troubles when so many are struggling just to buy rice n kerosene is a bit absurd. she will have to sell some real estate? what a joke and beyond that it seems she entered college rather suddenly... entrance exam? she still has plenty of people blocking for her it seems ; ) all the best nori-p

I want to say unbelievable... but after years of working relief, aid, and welfare in many countries developed and 3rd world, nothing surprises me anymore...
This mother must have been to a point of desperation, and her nonsensical statements to the police, if accurate belies this... of course, who knows, she could have been thinking about economic needs that were not needs at all....
One thing that Japan desperately needs is more centers dealing with emergency aid and care for children. There are places here and the welfare system is surprisingly good but with many areas of Japanese life, the bureaucracy can be stifling...
Of all that I have seen, I can say without a shadow of a doubt that the one area that Japan lacks in is churches. I know that this will rile up the agnostics and atheists but only in areas where there are a significant number of churches are there realistic alternatives to the bureaucracy that naturally accompanies governmental social solutions.
The child definitely needs to be placed in a home for now. as for mom... she needs some serious counseling and some time in the gray bar to really get a grasp of the magnitude of her poor decision.

tmarie, that is simply not the case that parents have no support here. the health insurance office has classes for new moms and moms can take them again when they have another child. the classes run the gamut from how to deal with pregnancy including emotional and physical issues, birth, and child care. there are many different programs and counseling opportunities available as well thru the office. my bride cooked her first meal at the new moms class; ) she not only learned to cook a meal, use a stove etc. she was also given a primer on nutrition as well. children are provided excellent health benefits for the equivalent of 2 dollars a month at the doctor of your choice. they also schedule reunions for moms that went thru the classes, dinners and other events to help moms out.
The 4 biggest factors in child abuse here are:
the highest cost of living on the planet. we all know how we should be adult, responsible and caring but with the bills piling up and mom and dad both working overtime and trying to hold a family together it is a real chore. tempers get short and people say and do things that they would never have dreamed of with a little less pressure.
the disintegration of the extended family. with family sizes having shrunk over the last two decades, most people do not have siblings to turn to for help. coupled with the large number of people who have moved from smaller towns to the mega cities, mom finds herself with little in the way of family support.
deteriorating economic situations mean more overtime for dad, less time for mutual family support and more pressure for mom to be superwoman....
where support may actually be available from grandma, first kids being born more and more to 30 somethings means that grandma is much older and far less genki than most of our grandmas were when we were born. my grandma was 36 when I was born ; )
all that said, this guy deserves the death penalty. there is nothing worse that systematically abusing the weakest among us. RIP little ones, I can only hope to believe there is something special for those taken so unfairly.

they always charge em with a nominal crime here when they pick them up because they want time to get the confession before charging him with the banger. now that he is living the high life eating anpan maybe he will talk. it would be nice to get this over. lets just hope he gets a significant sentence.

well, I think that if president obama wants to bring more destruction to afghanistan in the name of finishing whatever he thinks needs done which in my opinion is to repay the monetary favors that put him in office by opening and protecting u.s. exploitation of south eastern european oil reserves and fanning the economy by kicking the military industrial complex into gear then he should get out there n do the shooting himself.

here's one we have all heard before... 'we' means the americans that are supposed to be being productive and fueling the economy, bringing life into the world, and making the world a better place... not running half way around the world to bring death and destruction... I thought 'change' was in the air...

after all the zillion posts on this site from women demanding to be treated equal... it is nice to see one admit that they are the weaker sex on the average. I will not hold my breath waiting for an admission of emotional limitation however ; )
my rule is to never give a seat to a high school girl but if she seems eager I will strike up a conversation. I give my seat to attractive 20 somethings to nanpa them. I give my seat up to 30 something and older women and elderly men because it seems the right thing to do in my old fashioned mind. having a grandma give the seat you offered to her grandkids is just fine. if that is her joy, it is mine to share in as well. and yes, osaka has a monopoly on rudeness in just about any area one can imagine.

TokyoLurker, If someone wants to live in a country, they need to have either a unique and highly needed skill that transcends their lacks or basic skills that enable them to be competitive with the indigent job market. A JLPT 2 rating is not in the least unreasonable, it establishes a language proficiency aprox. equal to a grade school graduate. That would mean being able to use the joyo kanji and having a working vocabulary. Japan is already significantly burdened in supporting marginally employable j folk. Supporting immigrants makes no sense at all. For those with no job? Your home country is waiting with its arms wide open. Those that posses marketable skills? Japan needs you because as many have alluded to able, j folk tend to be quite a lazy lot.
