the girl that gave birth was obviously scared and confused beyond the ability to think correctly. she could have easily killed the baby (aborted it) at any time but obviously wanted to give it a chance. the baby was wrapped in a towel to keep it warm. my heart goes out to her and the flogging belongs to her parents and friends that failed to support her and be connected enough to know what was going on in her life. with a population density as high as it is here in Japan it becomes easier and easier to marginalize people that fail in any way as there are so many more in proximity that fulfill our needs. society is wasting it's greatest resource by letting these people fall thru the cracks. R.I.P. baby doe and I hope this girl can find the help that she needs.

What a ridiculous article.
The payment is designed to stimulate the economy. It is not envisioned to help people in need other than the fallout from the hoped for boost the economy will enjoy.
Yakuza and chinpira would be far more likely to spend the money as opposed to paying off debt or banking it so they will perform their duty 'admirably' in this situation.
If the point of an article is to denigrate the yakuza and castigate society for allowing its existence, then that should be the subject matter. This stretch does not even qualify as journalism.

What a horribly sad story. I have had 5 kids and there is no way that a man can mistake his wife being pregnant unless they live in different countries. With so little facts, one can only say that dad is a sorry excuse for a man.
Beyond that, where was her family? Neighbors? All these walls (literal and figurative) need to come down and Japanese people need to embrace their traditional culture. I get so tired of hearing how isolation is part of Japanese culture. Traditionally, that was simply not the case. Nor is the case now in functional families. Extended families lived together as common practice as the norm until recently, and being an feudal agrarian society until practically 1900, cooperation and relationship among those that were close to you was the culture. There is no need to ever have such tragedy.
Rest in peace mom and your little one. God speed to the remaining children, they are going to need every break that comes their way.

a time to heal, a time to kill...
nothing barbaric about taking a persons life in the interest of society as punishment for premeditated murder. it is common knowledge in Japan that murder is punishable by capital punishment. to apply it arbitrarily and indiscriminately would be to join in the murderers folly but this person took a gamble fully aware of the risk, and should they be caught, a quick and humane euthanasia by hanging, firing squad, electric chair, or lethal injection would be more that reasonable both ethically and economically.

The whole stimulus plan is the greatest hoodwink in u.s. history. the whole premise is that if the gov. drops a lot of dough, we will kick start the economy. did anyone forget that bush just dropped quite a lot of dough on afganistan n iraq? if that did not stimulate the economy, perhaps it was because so much of the expenditures were foreign so a buy american clause would make sense. roughly half of any project is going to be materials so shipping billions to foreign countries under the guise of kickstarting the u.s. economy seems as if it would be money wasted. but for that matter, I think all of the money is a waste.

electric2004: I had a bouncing baby girl just over a year ago. that was the second birth for us here in japan. the first time was not quite so demanding as we went to a national hospital and they were kind to us. but like you said, this time they wanted big bucks, about a thousand u.s. up front. and we coughed up monthly so that the total for everything was about 5000 bucks. we got 3000 bucks cash back from the feds for a 'live birth'. but everyone should know how devastating getting pregnant in japan can be financially. I was different but I can imagine how daunting it must be to a young couple who will go from starting salaries to one salary... salarymen start at about 2000 us a month including bonus and the wages dont go up that fast... every year I hear all the noise about the gov. trying new programs to get the birth rate up... for gods sake, include birth benefits IN THE INSURANCE! it might not have stayed this situation but it would definitely make a difference.

mom will never be caught. with no insurance coverage for prenatal care or birth she probably never visited a hospital. instead of encouraging the govt. to pay more for birth control and abortions, the govt should INCLUDE PRENATAL CARE AND BIRTH COSTS in insurance. birth control is readily available and free comdoms can be procured at many locations in metro areas. encouraging adoptions and a foster care system would be a great step in bringing japan into the modern age providing an alternative to such grizzly incidents. the 'orphanages' are full of unwanted kids. it it quite common to place kids of all ages up to high school in 'orphanages' here even when they have families. the group I volunteer with routinely provides aid to such organizations. god speed baby doe, and I hope that mom is somehow stricken by the depth of what she has done and gains the maturity she needs.

child care in and of itself will do nothing to assist an immature mother in assimilating the skills necessary to take care of herself and her baby. to the contrary, there is just as much of a possibility that it will reinforce the selfishness that is the root cause of these kinds of problems. there is virtually no foster care system here so there is virtually no way for child services to enforce abuse cases. this is a deep and convoluted problem that is going to need to be addressed on many levels starting with developing an understanding that foster care and adoption are signs of a mature society that values life. working at ways to make children become responsible for their actions would help as well. why would someone grow up any sooner than they had to if mom n dad paid everything thu college and society told you that you were a child till the age of 20? add to that, instilling a sense in the men that they are partners and responsible for lives that they create but in a society that has the highest abortion rate per capita in the world, that may be difficult. speaking of which, seems I read a bunch of posts the other day that free and on demand abortion stops cases like this by making sure all the kids are wanted. seems that premise has not born out here in japan. hate to bring it up but these are the kinds of things that a christian foundation instills in society and the absence of it and a mentality that the government is responsible for all will assure that things will worsen.

where was dad? this woman was obviously having troubles dealing with her kid, dad should have seen it and made provisions. doesnt matter if he is 'defacto' (love that;) or not. if he moved in, he signed up for the job. this putting all the pressure on mom to be the perfect june cleaver needs to stop.
was walking with my inlaws the other day as they were pushing their kid. she followed him dutifully as he strolled ahead looking so majestic. we hit a patch of gravel and I turned our stroller around to pull but she was not as adept and soon became bogged down. had I not sent him back for her, I am sure he would have waited till she struggled thru on their own.
he is not a bad guy at all, and I think he really wants to be a support to his family but there is something systemic there... all japanese are not the same but there is definitely a bent this way and unless it stops, these kinds of stories are going to continue to sadden us regularly.

likeitis-thanks for tuning me up. just didnt want to write a deep treatise on the nature of temporal or trial relationships before committing to a life partner.
just tired of all these girls slamming men for wanting to have their cake n eat it too when the average woman has just as many strings attached, just of a different color. not echoing anyones opinion, just expressing a thought that though the person writing the article, though they tried to create the image of maturity, was either naive or childish.
as for me I married a couple years ago after finding a reasonably balanced girl that could have an adult relationship. wish she was a little better at housework but you cant have everything ; )
I agree, sex for just sexes sake is shallow. a movie n dinner make desert all that much nicer ; ) and a real conversation? that would be icing on the cake.
what exactly is full service sex to you?

love reading posts like this. seems women always hammer men for wanting sex (obviously a married man dating is not looking for a bridge partner), yet the ultimatum for the girl is no ring, no relationship. just as much an antithesis of relationship. whatever happened to just being real and enjoying today for today? social movement brings social success... enjoying the company of someone married or not increases the odds of meeting mr/mrs right because it enlarges your social circle and help you become more skilled at interpersonal relationships with the opposite sex. at the same time one would think that the average person would understand that finding someone on the net is a low odds deal at best. anyone that passes hundreds of people a day yet needs to initiate relationship virtually....cant say that I have never done so, enjoyed it as well but I never complained when things didnt work out ....

wahahaha, someone has a chip on their shoulder ; ) that chum should bring some low hanging fruit. drove by Kyoto University and there was big sign in jap/eng that said ' israel, leave gaza alone' all the while hamas was lobbing mortars n missiles at the women n children of israel. could always be possible that the volunteers could break the poor me cycle that keeps the palestinians justifying the existence of hamas. or they could be misguided youth from KU fanning the flames of hate... I am hoping for the former.

Glad to see this book published by a Japanese publisher. It would really be nice to see Kodansha donate 10% of revenues from the sales of this book to help the less privileged. I have been in few places where falling thru the cracks is as devastating as it is here in Japan. Yet it takes so little to make a difference to have this kind of thing not happen. This is not an issue isolated to Tokyo, poverty is expanding in all corners of Japan. For those in Kansai, spending a little time in south Osaka would be an eye opener and as impacting or more than the book. If every able body person in japan volunteered just a couple hours a month or donated the equivalent in wages... is our future not worth it?
