globalwatcher -- agreed. That is why I got the heck out of Japan several months back. And it is only going to get worse, because taxes are going to go up significantly to pay the enormous reconstruction bills. But much, if not most, of that money will also be spent on pork-barrel projects. Japan is in dire financial straights.

How come the U.S. survived, actually floursihed, for decades with a strong dollar policy, but Japan panics because the yen has gained strength? Oh, that's right, its because Japan has ignored its structural issues for over 20 years, especially as it comes to domestic demand/efficiency, and is forced to continue to rely on exports to prosper. The politicians need to recognize once and for all that the Japan Inc. model is dead, and only an accelerated economic decline for Japan can result from them not taking drastic action. Koizumi saw that. Why can't these guys?

Smorkian -- please. The only thing riduculous is you believing the ace of the staff on a Japanese pro team has any comparison to being in the same position on any MLB team. Darvish maybe faces one power-hitting left handed batter a night, and at most three guys who can really hurt him. The Yankees have three power hitting lefties just in the infield/catcher and the whole line-up can hit a mistake out of the park. But, please let me know how many Japanese pitchers of late have been anything but a third or fourth starter in MLB. And then tell me my saying he's no Weaver, Halladay or Verlander is ridiculous. Stop comparing apples and oranges.

Smorkian -- as usual, you miss the point and try to reduce everyrthing to a simple sound-bite, in your blind attempt to support Japan. You do not need to be a "radiation expert" to understand that they could have simply moved the race to Suzuka and made this a non-issue. But, instead, Japanese pride, arrogance and self-focus being what they are, they decided they had to make a statement to the world, and say Motegi is perfectly safe, even though Fukushima is still spewing radioactivity. The point is he is not a radiation expert, and would not have even have to give this a second thought if Japan had simply moved the race. That way no one, including Rossi, would have to trust Japan's statement that Motegi is safe. Which, given the stories all over the world, as recently as last week, that Japan has kept critical radiation information from their own citizens, is hard for a foreigner to do.

Smorkian -- In reponse to your question, I said it for just the reason you yourself state -- "faced (and beaten) the best in Japan." Comparing that to the guys I mentioned who have consistently won big games in MLB, where the talent level is head-and-shoulders above Japan, is simply ludicrous. Like comparing AAA ball to MLB. And there's no way he's gonna get physically as fired up as Weaver did a couple of weeks ago, and challenge the whole opposing team's bench. He'll be like Ichiro and Dice-K, who never really become a true part of the team/team chemistry and won't protect his teammates. Talent is one thing. Being, as you say, a "gamer" in MLB requires way more than that, and I see no evidence of this in Darvish. IMO, he's a spoiled, sheltered prima-donna and will have a hard time becoming a solid and reliable part of a winning team.

They should have moved the race to Suzuki. Then it would have been a non-issue.

IMO he is a reasonable prospect, but 15 games is about the tops of what he would win in MLB. He clearly has a live arm, but is no where near the complete pitcher/competitor a Halladay, Weaver, or Verlander is. But, maybe he could be the "Japanese" Lincecum, since he is built along the same lines.

Kentaro -- really? So Japan was fighting for the "freedom" of all the countries it had occupied? Like China. Korea, Burma, the Philippines, ...? If you truly believe that then you are Exhibbit A in the case against the Japanese education system and whether it teaches an accurate view of Asian history in the first half of the 20th century. So don't expect a lot of support here.

Thankfully I couldn't care less, since I no longer have to deal with Japan's inability to truly grasp the horror of its decades of Imperialism anymore. Japan's isolation from reality, and the willful ignorence of much of its population, is just a fleeting memory.

TumbleDry -- well put. Especially since, as it says in the article, this was the third straight quarter of contraction. Which means there was five and one-half months of contraction going on before 3/11. So, this "tailspin" the article talks about as a result of 3/11 was well-established before the disaster.

GW -- It took this to get you to realize the obvious? Japan is rudderless. Has been since Koizumi left office, and will only get worse because the Tohoku/Fukushima disaster has added more problems to a government incapable of even dealing with the day-to-day stuff. As soon as Koizumi left, the old-style fractional politics returned, so the country lost five years when it could have been solving some structural problems. But, as is way too often the case in Japan, they wasted the opportunity, and 3/11 has just magnified the problems. A classic example of the old saying: "We have seen the enemy, and it is us."

Possibly another reason Korea is growing and has made a remarkable come-back from the Asian financial crisis, while Japan has sat basically stagnant -- they are willing to change when it makes obvious sense. (Their revamping their agricultural system so they can get on board the FTA band-wagon is another obvious example.) If Japan cannot even consider changing things like addresses, because of the age-old excuse about "being rooted in Japanese culture", then they will never be able to address the big problems like, agriculture, immigration, citizenship, etc.

Great, that way the stupity will be concentrated in one party rather than spread out among three. Should be a huge help in the re-building of Japan.

Personally, I never undertsood the attraction of this attraction. At 1/25th scale the replicas cannot due any justice to the impact of the actual landmarks. Plus they are not in the right setting. Totally lost on me.
