“I will continue my political activity and keep fighting in court,” Ishikawa said, adding that he feared the conviction would affect Ozawa politically.

This one sentence demonstrates what is so very wrong with Japanese politics -- that the people these folks are supposed to serve don't matter in the slightest. He has been convicted of a crime, and all he cares about is his own political future, and his crony Ozawa. The entire system is hopelessly broken, but there is no call whatsoever to fix it.

Who cares? Japan has under-performed on the world stage, as is often the case. But the incessant media hype will begin again within a few months, whether they go 1-3 or 0-4. That's the cycle because it helps sell papers.

Simply amazing. Six months after the disaster and they still don't have the technology in place to identify this gas. The inmates are truly running the asylum.

Some nations have stopped importing some food products from Japan.

And this is exactly why. Certainly no one can fault them for protecting their citizens from such uncertainty.

Nisshin residents voiced concerns about the possibility of radioactive material being brought to Nisshin from Fukushima and dispersed during the display. So the Kawamata fireworks were not used

And people critisized Danica Patrick for voicing concern about potential radioactive issues. But Japanese are allowed to have similar concerns, and that's OK.

And so now it is back to politics as normal.

And hence the problem, and why Japan's slide will only accelerate.

And, of course, since Japan needs Iranian oil, its delegates sat and listened to this venemous crap. Australia and NZ had the guts to walk out, but not Nippon.

promised that Japan would disclose to the international community all information related to the accident in a swift and accurate manner

Six months and way too many lies too late. This is completely laughable.

Hence the classification difference of "developing countries" and "developed countries".

Nigelboy -- Wow, really? What an insight. But, as usual, it misses the point. Japan is not simply a "developed" country, it is a declining one. Steeply declining. And much of the reason it is is because it refused to give up social and economic models better suited for the 1960's than the 2010's. By basically pushing half of its talent pool, women, into a traditional role, it has lost ground competitively in a global economy. And, it is likely too late for that to be turned around, as young women today are still taught it is more important to be kawaii, than brilliant or successful.

“Japan will do its best to solve the issue,” said Japanese spokesman Yutaka Yokoi, noting this included getting the understanding of Okinawans.

Same B.S. Japan has been shoveling ever since Hatoyama stupidly told Obama to "trust him". Doesn't Japan get it? They can't be trusted in this matter, or any others, if they can't even speak for their own people. And, Japan's "best" just isn't good enough.

Who cares? Japan effectively missed the last forty years of social change that would have possibly allowed it to remain competitive in a global economy, where smart people, regardless of sex, are making contributions to their countries' well-being. And now the developing countries in Asia like China, Vietnam, Cambodia, etc. have replaced Japan as growth markets. Japan wrote its own epitath decades ago and it is rooted in a blind adherence to a strict role-based system for men and women.

Jeffrey Duelley -- thanks for the laugh, especially from someone who accuses others of "knowing nothing about economics." In case you missed the history of Japan's post-war economy, it was built on consumerism in the West, and "maxing out credit cards" by the consumers there. JeffLee is absolutely right when he says Japan must get off this export-focused model and address the deep structural inefficiencies this model created in the domestic economy and the low level of domestic consumer demand. Throwing more yen into the Forex market to artificially keep the echange rate at a level to sustain this model is just an economic Band-aid. Not a real solution.

Will Japan and its media please remember the humbling performance of the "Brave Blossoms" when it starts all the hype about the team as it prepares to qualify for the next tournament? One win in 23 matches and a losing streak of 17 games should be mentioned in every article. Not simply the score when they beat some minnow like HK. A little perspective would be great -- for a change.

"Safer" than the world's second worst nuclear disaster. Now that's setting the bar low enough that possibly even Japan can exceed it.

Typical isnt it , why wouldnt you need a 156 page manual to fill in a form in Japan hahahaha

.ExportExpert -- So right. Country is in the midst of its worst crisis since WW II according to Kan, and they can't help but rely on un-necessary process, rather than thinking about results and actually doing what is right. Because process is what they do best. Country will never change, and continue to decline as a result.

Good on Turkey. Isreal has acted as an un-challenged bully for way too long. And the U.S., including Obama, has just watched it happen due to the strong Jewish vote. The idea of the U.S. "mediating" this is preposterous. For all his rhetoric Obama has been a miserable failure with Mideast foreign policy.

. If you think about it, it really is the ultimate way to say, "I take full responsibility for this."

serendipitous -- don't agree. This is the ultimate sign of the fact that "I recognize I did nothing to change the company for the better while I was President, because I DID NOT take personal responsibility. Instead I was too busy maintainng the Wa, because that is why I was chosen, not because of my abilities. And I recognize that I do not have the strength or skills to really lead the company and make the needed changes." He failed once and was simply scared of failing again, but this time in the glare of the public spotlight.

Bend over and grab your ankles folks. At least five years, and probably longer, of paying higher taxes to a woefully inefficient government. On top of the ludicrously high current rates -- like 40% for companies. Glad I got out.

Understandable, yes. Altogether rational? Maybe not so much.

LFRAgain -- agreed. But no less irrational than the Japanese people who shunned refugees from the Fukushima area and have bullied their kids in school. Radiation is a scary word, and holding Danica Patrick to a higher standard than that demonstrated by Japanese people is unfair.

SuperLib -- sorry, Nope, not Yep. Obama and Clinton have been abject failures at forcing Israel to engage in meaningful negotiations. In fact, just the opposite. Isreal has backed off agreements/concessions it made previously, and continues its construction of new settlements completely unabated. The Palestinians have no option but to outwardly defy the U.S. Unfortunately, Obama talked a great game, and made some passionate speeches. But has delievered nothing.
