Are those legs or tooth-picks? Sorry, but as a company that has great influence among young women, Uniglo should be socially responsible and find models who don't promote the ultra-thin look. It is not healthy and eating disorders here are on the rise.

cleo -- as I suspected, you didn't answer my question. The Chris Savoie case is a red-herring you're using it only to divert attention from the real issue. But, even so, why should the archaic Japanese divorce laws dictate where Chris decided to seek employment and raise his kids? Respectfully, Chris has VERY GOOD REASONS for "dragging" everyone off to the states. His own long-term employment opportunities may very well have been better there, and, with Japan drowning in debt, and with a shrinking population/economy, it would not have been unreasonable for him to conclude his kids' possibly were as well. Sorry, but you are in a serious state of denial if you don't think that reasonable people might conclude that young kids could have a better future in other locations than here.

“You always were a weakling,” fumes the wife. “You prove it in bed every night, don’t you?” Now that's funny. Rest of the article is nonsense, but this one quote made reading it worthwhile.

cleo -- as someone who has stated here numerous times that she is married to a Japanese person, I think you might be more sympathetic to this issue. Not wishing it, for sure, but do you honestly think you'd stand a chance of getting custody and/or visitation if you and your spouse divorced and he decided to seek sole custody without visitation for you? Remember he's the one in the family register, not you. And that's what this whole issue revolves around -- Japan's unwillingness to change that archaic institution.

Tough question. What constitutes "Japanese cuisine" these days? Is it the rice ball, sandwich, danish and energy drink that salary guys eat as their breakfast? Or is it all the diet supplements that women scarf down? In general, however, I'd say the average diet here has way too many empty calories, as well as too much starch and carbos, and not enough lean protein.

She can come and bring her eco-friendly candles to my apartment anytime. But I'd be sweating so profusely I'd have to turn the A/C on HIGH, so the net would probably be an increase in harm to the environment.

5Speed -- nonsense. bamboohat is absoluetly correct, as his comment referred to the "court of public opinion". (You do know what is? Right?)In the U.S. the public knows that by paying the fine Toyota is basically admitting to the charges, and not having to agree in writing to the cover-up was just window dressing. Besides, oh great legal guru, any lawyer with even minimal liability experience would tell you that Toyota agreeing to the fine, even without the admission of guilt, is going to make it harder for them to defned themselves in the civil suits. Which means they knew that they were in trouble, and $16.4 million was the easiest course of action. Imagine the damage to their reputation if they had fought this, and the government unleashed all the evidence they likely have.

Fredster - so what is your point? The rules of evidence/discovery apply to all companies equally. Who would better know how Toyota handles these kinds of issues than someone who has tangled with them? Should they have taken Toyota's word for it, like a good Japanese reporter would have? It's called reporting/investigative journalism.

I'm completely shocked at these allegations. Everyone who has lived in Japan for more than a month or so knows how forthcoming Japanese companies are with potentially damaging information. Sarcasm aside, Toyota needs to really take a hard look at its corporate culture if it is going to continue to succeed in a global market. The level of secrecy that is acceptable here in Japan is not in most other countries. I fear they are going to find that out the hard way in the numerous legal fights they are going to have in the next few months and years.

Molenir -- that may be one of the silliest posts I've ever read on JT. Propaganda is nothing but pushing an opinion. So saying "this is not about opinions, its about propaganda" makes absolutely zero sense.

sf2k -- nice sentiment, but where's the proof? If "most Japanese" are so angry at these right-wingers, how come they act with such impunity? Sorry, actions speak louder than words, and since no one lifts so much as a finger to silence these morons, I think most Japanese are somewhat sympathetic to their "cause".

realist -- yup, the lady who knows about Russia because she can see it from her state, and could not name a single Supreme Court ruling that she had issues with, is definitely someone I want going eyeball to eyeball with folks like Wen and Putin. Just the thought of that is too scary to contemplate.

Sad that the populace of Japan let these morons go on un-checked. While I would love to believe that the vast majority of Japanese do not share these folks' views, I don't see any calls for them to be muzzled either. And I have to wonder why that is.
