Does anyone know which TV station is paying for the wedding? Surely one is. I mean hell, one paid for exclusive rights to secretly tape his proposing to her, so you must assume they'll whore out their wedding as well. He craves the PR. Do you think he'll wear socks for the big day?

A classic Catch-22 -- TV ratings are down because the shows all suck, and young folks are hooked on their mobiles, so they cut production costs, and therefore quality, even more. Which, will cause even lower ratings and advertising spend, which will cause more cuts, etc. The TV stations, production and talent agencies, and advertising firms have slayed the Golden Goose. And I for one, don't shed a tear for any of them. They were too stubborn to change years ago when they should have.

One can only hope that he was already dead, or died fairly quickly, after being hit by the second vehicle, and did not suffer for 24 kilometers. God rest his soul.

All I can add is "thank God for cable". At least the Golf Channel had Tiger Week going this past week, and there were some decent movies and re-plays of NFL games. I make it a general rule to never watch any channel below like #12, except the NHK "news".

Please, this piece is just more pure socialist clap-trap from good old Henry Hilton. He conveniently glosses over the fact that many economists in Japan, including Fujii, the Finance Minister, are very concerned about the health of the Japanese economy and the swelling debt and persistent deflation. In fact, many believe the chances of a "double-dip" recession are just as high here as any sustained recovery are. And his cheap shot at the "Anglo-Saxon" economic model in his last paragraph is total crap. Is he forgetting that all those same Anglo-Saxons are the ones who bought all those Japanese cars on easy credit, so Japan could thrive? Likewise is he ignoring the massive bailout of JAL on the horizon, or the one of all the major J-banks a few years ago? Sorry, Henry, but smugness about Japan's economic situation is very much mis-placed.

biglittleman -- silly comment a pure red herring. The fact is that December 25th is celebrated worldwide as his birthday, and is the second holiest day in the Christian calendar behind Easter. So for these idiots to get drunk and abuse this guy as part of a "Christmas" party IS insulting. They obviously don't have a clue as to the spirit of the day, so it is sickening for them to use it as an excuse for anti-social behavior. And, since I live here, and have to put up with this and all the other public nonsense/indecency J-folks display on Christmas, I do care. Let them insult Mohammed for a change.

Wonderful, Japan will now be turning to a 62 year-old comedian who nearly killed himself in a drunk-driving incident for advice on mental health. Priceless.

Associating this sort of crap in any way with "Christmas" is insulting in the extreme. Jesus wasn't born to give J-morons a reason to get drunk and do stupid things.

tkoind2 -- while I share your sentiment, I think you are missing the mark here. The kind of bubble-headed gal that would want to go to this park with their boyfriend would be bored stiff at a gallery or event. And why waste the time or money for a romantic cafe, when she's satisfied with simply going to the park and taking pictures to email to her equally bubble-headed friends? I mean, seriously, how many fans of SMAP do you think go to museums or galleries? A Softbank store, to see the new handsets, maybe, but that's about the extent of their intellectual curiosity.

I love KFC, but not enough to stand in line for it, or order it months in advance. Besides, that would be choosing to celebrate Christmas in the Japanese "tradition". Something I swear I will never do. New Years, yes, absolutely Christmas, nope.

WOW -- isn't this a violation of security protocol? Allowing all the Imperial Family to ride on this train at the same time could invite a catastrophy. What would happen if it de-railed? The whole family would be gone. Even most major companies will not let all of senior management travel on the same plane together.

numbskull -- Why can't you simply accept the fact that Tiger is not the person he willingly portrayed himself as? Doesn't make him any less of a great champion. But, does make him a whole lot less marketable/valuable as a spokesperson, as TAG Heuer stated today, particularly among women.

numbskull -- do you bother reading the news or any other posts? Or even taking a breath? At least three news sources, including two of the U.S. TV networks, are reporting that his wife is 100% going to divorce him. I assume that even you can figure out that this means he wasn't much of a husband or father, despite all the PR to the contrary. I mean, who knows best whether it was real or image that his spouse?

numbskull -- your rants are getting really tiresome. Mainly because you have no facts to spupport your statements. The biggest fact so far is what I stated yesterday -- Tiger's popularity took a record plunge, from 85% favorable to 33% favorable in a recent pole by USA Today/Gallup, and his unfavorables are up to 47%. Now he may bounce back, as you suggest, but the only thing for certain, is that the public has turned sour on him. Also, according to ABC News, his #1 public, his wife, has decided to file for divorce. That could make things even worse for him.

thepro -- possibly the understatement of the year. Not only is her demeanor irritating, but having to look at her rather unattracive mug (I'm being kind.) every night on the news is really adding insult to injury. Sad that the DPJ has to allow her and her equally irksome side-kick, Kamei, of the NDP, have this much influence.

bobbafett -- I think you are being way too moralistic and simplistic. At least in the states, psychologists believe that it is best for children to have relationships with both parents, regardless of the circumstances of the divorce. Even if the father was a "philanderer" he can still be of value to his son in his life, particularly if he comes to grips with his problems and tries to turn his life around. Everyone makes mistakes. Doesn't mean he can't be a good parent to the boy.

numbskull -- I concede, you have worn me out with your seemingly endless stream of rants and convoluted and emotional rhetoric. First you claimed Tiger had a "moral right" to privacy, even though that right was being used to conceal his immoral acts from his sponsors, who paid him millions to be moral. Then, when the details came out, it was too bad for the sponsors, because they should have known that Tiger, like most men, will cheat if given the opportunity, and the morlas clause in the contract was basically not important. And, now finally, you want people to "stop assuming anything", even though you spent most of yesterday laying blame on Elin Woods, due to her supposed frigidness and violent temper. It's impossible to have a rational discussion with you, because you are like Bush and Cheney -- you just muddy the waters with pure speculation and hope by that repeating it enough, it becomes true. Bottom line, virtually every prediction I made about Tiger's situation and it's impact on his marketability has come true. Other than Knight, the head of Nike, who I concede makes a similar argument as you do, no one else has offered their unconditional support. But, remember, Nike has built an estimated $650 million golf business around Tiger, so they have to ride this out with him. I leave you to your debate.

Sorry, but there are 18 posts here, and I've yet to see a compelling reason for anyone to come here -- except possibly horny young guys who want to drink to excess with beautiful, "easy" women. Is that really the best thing Japan has to offer? Sure, Nikko is great, but it alone is not worth flying 12 hours and paying a grand or more to see. Ditto Akihabara, Kyoto, etc. Someone in the U.S. can fly to Vegas right now cheap, get a great hotel for well under $100, and drive a couple of hours and see the Grand Canyon, in addition to all Las Vegas has. And you want them to come for Roppongi? Please.

numbskull -- you are really beginning to make no sense at all. The fact is that Woods isn't taking time off due to injury or health reasons. He's doing it because he is in the midst of the biggest meltdown in the history of sports and/or celebrity. And trying to salvage his marriage is just the start. But, in answer to your question, if he were taking the time off to attend to his health, or his wife's, like Mickelson did, he sponsors would undoubtably stand by him. And they would be applauded for doing it. Also, the fact that Tiger made ten times the sponsorship money that Mickelson did, according to you, makes his complete lack of self-control even more bothersome. How does one rationalize taking huge sums of money from folks like AT&T, Accenture, and Gillette ("The best a man can be"), and then banging porn stars? Finally, if Mickelson doesn't "keep it in his pants" as you put it, then he deserves the same as Tiger. So what?

numbskull-- again, I'm not the only one finding flaws in your "logic". First off, what the companies paid Tiger in endorsements is only a fraction of what they invested in complete advertising and promotional campaigns. All told, these companies spend hundreds of millions, as I said, if not in the billions, on Tiger's ads. Now, did they get their money's worth, as you suggest? Possibly, although as Junnama states, it is quite possible that they didn't. What is clear is that he signed contracts that included morals clauses knowing full-well that he was likely in violation of them, and knowing that these companies would never have paid him the money if the truth was known. Also, your defense of your statements about his wife is pure nonesense. Just because she doesn't read JT it is OK for you to speculate wildly about her sexual activity level? Because she won't be harmed by it? Please, spreading an unfounded rumor/speculation is worse, because, as you state, you have no basis for it. The publication that broke this story had over 300 text messages, voice recordings, and travel documents to verify Tiger's activities. (And you can bet that given Tiger's history of suing publications, and the staggering amounts his sponsors have invested in him, that their lawyers were completely satisfied with the proof before they went to press.) How does that qualify as a rumor? Might not win a conviction, but would easily get you an indictment. Finally, let me again state that, IMO, Tiger's actions are not reason for me or anyone else to judge his moral character. However, IMO, they are more than enough reason for me to judge his trustworthiness when it comes to business dealings and the press. Totally different.
