No surprise here. Anyone who has been in Japan longer than a week or so sees this first-hand every day. Japan is very-much third-world in thinking in many ways. This being just one. Hopefully a DPJ-led government can start to correct this problem.

JT -- you run a picture of these guys at least once every six months or so. Isn't there anything more newsworthy than this bunch of over-the-hill, skinny guys, crying for attention every weekend?

WhiteHawk -- Must be wonderful to be so self-rightous, and know that unlike Ted Kennedy, you yourself, and the folks you support, have no human failings or have ever fallen short of your "dreams". ( I guess "Mission Accomplished" was just an aberration, right?) However, since you want folks to "prove your points wrong", I will do just that. Fact is Kennedy had no "sailing waters". In fact, a members of my family have sailed many times in races and regattas around the Cape and the Islands that Kennedy participated in, and have pictures of him and his sail boat in the waters of Hyannis. Please stop showing your ideology-fed ignorence. Kennedy was wealthy, no doubt, but, more than any of your heroes, he was a man of the people.

presto345 -- please come out of your stupor, no doubt brought on by your 40 years here. The LDP model of relying on exports and heavy borrowing to pave roads hit the fan at least fifteen years ago, when China, India, Vietnam, etc., etc., started to grow and steal and render Japan's reliance on exports obsolete. (Compare Japan's % of GDP from exports to the U.S.'s.) The declining birthrate IS a real issue, since there are not enough wage earners to shoulder the huge public debt -- twice the GDP -- or pay the pensions, or, build a solid domestic-demand-led economy. Really, you need to master Econ 101 before you go to the LDP's defense. Not the LDP version of economics.

What is all the "Roppongi is dangerous" crap? Sure, some drunk guys got rolled for some big tabs, but that's not "dangerous". Dangerous is concern over your physical well-being, and I can't remember a gaijin being killed in Roppongi since I've lived here -- in Roppongi -- for over 5 years. Does Roppongi have ruthless and some unsavory elements to it? Sure. But the yaks would never let it become dangerous, as they would lose all their business.

‘‘Although the ruling bloc claimed that ‘the economy has rebounded,’ the nation’s weak economic structure dependent on external demand has not changed,’’ -- Not sure the DPJ has the answer to this, but they have at least identified the problem. 55 years of paving roads on borrowed money, while ignoring the real structural issues like a declining birthrate and no oppoptunities for women, has come home to roost. Even Toyota today had to announce the first closing of a plant in their history.

USNinJapan2 -- gotta agree with Statistician on this one. You make a huge leap of faith by assuming that these were feral cats, and not simply a couple of abandoned domestic ones. (Heaven knows that the chance of some Japanese people simply abandoning cats because they tire of them, or can't afford to care for them, is very high.) And, there is certainly no reason to believe that they were part of feral cat "colonies" causing harm to anyone. You are way over-dramatizing. And, if you ever try to take "further action" when I occasionally feed a stray cat, you better have more than your theory to support you.

Real mature couple. But I guess its better than him snapping her neck. Maybe they need to have a 7th wedding party to "renew" their love.

isthistheend -- agree. I'll agree that sometimes Debito is a little too melodramatic and can be his own worst enemy. But, at least he has the guts and conviction of his causes to actually do something about them, rather than just sit on his computer and throw cheap shots at folks on blogs.

Personally, I have no major problem with Mr. James, per se. I'm arrogant enough to not care one bit what Japanese people's stereotype of foreigners is. But, what confuses me is why would Dentsu/McDonald's pick a 43 year-old American to endorse products available only in Japan? Makes no logical sense to me. It's like having Dice K as the spokesperson for Taco Bell in the U.S.

OssanAmerica -- I think you have been in J-land too long. Your ability to connect the dots, as well as draw meanignful analogies has really declined. First off, the second comment in my post was a generalization about all talento here, not just this gal. So, obviously, the "what a country" comment was based on that entire universe, not simply "Britney". But, if you don't think the average talento here speaks ill about the overall intellectual capacity/wit level of this country, then please tell me where I'm wrong. Also, your analogy about the pet rock would be on target if we were talking here about an inatimate object, like Hello Kitty. In this case, since we are discussing a living, breathing person, it lacks relevance.

"and in the end felt like Mariah Carey,” -- except without an ounce of talent. Which, of course, makes her the perfect "talento". What a country.

tokyochris -- please clarify your last sentence? Respectfully, I can agree with you that getting angry about a word, like haafu or gaijin, may not be a good use of someone's time. However, the fact that such words are often times used as rationale here among many Japanese to justify prejudice and bad behavior is worth getting angry about. So long as that kind of structural bigotry exists, Japan will never take its rightful place among the world's great countries.

TokyoRoughGuy -- huh? If my math is even close, this train traveled about 600 feet while this guy was getting his rocks off shooting candids of these two gals. And you don't think that's a problem?

The J-gal must be very disheartened. With one winner and one first runner-up in just the past couple of years, not even making the last 15 is quite a slap. Her marketablity/endorsement-value just dropped dramatically. That acne commercial she's on cable right now with may be her last.

Hotbox08 -- how do you figure that for Japan, which has a rich history in men's marathon, including at least one Olympic Gold, that 6th is a "great result"? Absolutely, anyone running a marathon in world-class time has my admiration and respect. But, as an accoplishment for Japan's running culture, it is hardly worth celebrating.
