soldave -- of course it is. But that's the point. Unless it is "endorsed" by a J-celeb, people here won't go see it. How juvenile is that?

Bgood41 -- "sugar to the ignorence addict". Clever quote. Who'd you borrow it from? Someone on Fox News is my guess. But, even so, I'd take that over the "heroin for the simple-minded ideologues" that Bush's words represented for 8 long years. Can't your grasp the fact that all the examples you gave -- Pakistan, Somalia, Jerusalem, etc. -- are all complex problems? And a one-size fits all foreign policy like Bush had, principally because he did not like complexities, is not the answer. But, I'm game, please give me a single example of a world hot-spot that Bush left in better shape than when he found it.

Watched most of the speach on CNN last evening. Made me proud to once again have an intelligent man in charge of the U.S., rather than a simple-minded ideologue. Sure he's reaching, and cannot realistically hope to correct the numerous issues between the U.S. and the Muslim world in his presidency, even if it goes two terms. But, at least he clearly has a grasp of them, and is not looking to simply impose the U.S.'s will on the region. Just ask yourself, when was the last time a U.S. president got applause like that in a Muslim country? That alone speaks volumes about the potential for some progress.

Tosakan -- You are really reaching with your pop psychology. In fact, as noted in many intelligent posts, there are plenty of reasons tp "disbelieve her or ridicule her". Even if it is true, it is incredibly shallow and downright idiotic for her to mention it at an event to fight the spread of HIV/AIDS. Which, in case your psche books don't mention, is principally spread by careless sexual habits. Personally, I couldn't care less how many times she does or does not have sex. But, I do care what a foolish message she is sending out to young girls -- "That's how much I love it."

northlondon -- you're not serious are you? If you come to JT to get your news on Japan, you are in significant trouble. This is no different than a society piece in any newspaper -- where the writer feels completely free to mix news and opinion. Note that the story was not accredited to Kyodo News or any other source. Besides, the "yeah, right" comment was nothing more than 99% of us were thinking anyway. This gal has some major self-esteem issues.

The only thing worse than this "dress" is the thought of the ear-splitting shrieks of kawaii that the 16,500 fans must have let out.

northlondon -- you're a riot. You see hidden racism in everything. Respectfully, I was simply pointing out that I think JT got a little carried away with their hyperbole. That was the hole point. But, in direct reponse to your comment, I don't believe Jun represents "Japanese beauty", whatever that is. She may well be "the face of a best-selling fashion magazine" here, but, so what? She may represent what JeffLee states as the "western influenced beauty", but, in my opinion, does not represent "Japanese beauty" any more than she represents "American beauty". She is a beautiful woman, why does JT need to characterize it as "Japanese beauty"?

sydenham -- speak for yourself. This girl does absolutely nothing for me. My gal is 10X hotter, and with an actual body. Oh, and she doesn't giigle or say sugoi or kawaii every other sentence like Akina likely does.

whitepokey -- agree. All these celebs with the shot-gun weddings of late are great role models as well -- right? But, then again, if there were any real leaders in politics or business here, then young people would not have to look for role models in SMAP.

Is there a contest among the various companies/ad and PR agencies to see who can launch a product with the silliest campaign? If so, there have been at least 5 or 6 good candidates here on JT is the last few weeks.

Ridiculous -- a damn soap opera, including numerous feined bows of apology and crocidile tears from his fellow SMAP members. All covered like its "news". This country has lost all perspective and sense of reality.

Why doesn't the guy just drive down the street with a bullhorn shouting "Hey check me out"? I mean, my God, an orange car with two over-dressed dogs on his lap, just screams of insecurity and a need for attention. I can hear the high-pitched squeals from the teenage girls of "KAWAII" from here.

stirfry -- agree. Folks who do this are just screaming for attention. They don't love their pet, they love the attention it brings them. Just like any other accessory.

Proffesor -- lol. Most of these pregnancies are "unplanned", as I said. (Or do you not understand the meaning of that word?). Your explanation only applies to planned ones. Respectfully, there are way too many "delicate situations" of late here in Japan among the celebs for these all to be considered/rational decisions.

Pardon my being so negative, but why is it so wonderful that a woman who married an "ex-pro surfer" only after she found out she was pregnant, gave birth? Is this the new social order in Japan? People getting married only when required to? Seems like that's all the stories about cleb marriages of late have been about. Yes, Rie has certainly overcome a lot of issues in her life, and deserves to be happy. No doubt. But why is unplanned pregnancy suddenly so fashionable here?

Just an observation, but 81cm. is only like 32 inches. Anywhere else in the world and she'd have to take off the whole outfit to get publicity given that rather modest breast size. What has she been doing the last six years? Certainly not working out.

Wow, a new low, even for Japan -- stripping at a press event. Sure she's great looking, but come on. Does every promotion need to pander to the lowest common denominator? "I came without any underwear"? Please.

Knowbetter -- agree. When at least the first ten minutes or so of each and every NHK broadcast for the last couple of weeks has been nothing but showing health inspectors running around airports in hospital gowns and/or people flocking to buy masks, what can you expect from a population that is taught by birth not to think for themselves and trust the authorities to do what is best for them? Shame that people here cannot weigh the actual facts for themselves and then make an appropriate decision.
