and the farmers who harvest the field may very well be Japan’s last samurai.

Sorry, but this comparison is foolish, IMO. Respectfully, samurai were brave men of honor and self-respect and personal responsibility. There is nothing honorable in not farming land because a perverted farm policy pushed into effect by the farm lobby makes it more attractive to do so. Nor is their real self-respect or personal responsibility in hiding behind 700% tariffs, sky-high subsidies and other measures to protect yourself from competition. Samurai never ran from a fight, why are Japanese farmers? Especially if their product is so superior, as the author claims. Or do they realize that the world is not clamoring for $1.50 apples?

May she rest in peace and sincere condolences and best wishes to Mao. Hopefully she can come back mentally from this, and even manage to find additional strength. Twenty-one years old is much too young to lose one's parent, especially when she's so much in the public eye and has constant demands on her.

Great, Japan now has another export -- groping. And just like in Japan, the guy will get away with it. Wonderful example of real moral leadership.

Wow, cannot think of a worse PR move by Japan than this. If they think they are going to find a sympathetic court in the U.S., especially in Seattle, one of the most beautiful/natural/environmentally-concerned cities in the country, if not the world, it clearly shows how isolated Japan is from international politics and culture. The U.S. environmental lobby will have a field-day with this and Japan, even if it should somehow get its day in court, will wind up losing BIG TIME in the court of public opinion. What idiot approved this?

tokyokawasaki -- brilliant post. Unfortunately Japan's political system and its politicians are a significant, if not insurmountable, obstacle to it regaining its mojo, and becoming great again. Forcing one to ask if the expression that people get the government they deserve is true.

zichi -- agreed. Why not just save the time and admit the obvious? TEPCO, enabled by regulators set on protecting the nuclear industry, rather than the public, and politicians too busy with playing politics rather than actually serving the public. No mystery here.

Pretty ironic that the country that before March 11th was trying to portray itself as the leader in environmental protection has now become the poster-child for environmental disaster. And all because, as is most often the case with Japan, they were all talk and no action. They ignored safety issues in relation to Fukushima for at least two decades -- most noticably in regards to adequate protection from a potential tsunami. Then they had a completely inadequate crisis response plan -- likely causing the near-complete meltdowns and release of radioactive gases. And, finally, they have demonstrated complete incompetence and disregard for the environment in trying to control the damage. Too typical of Japan.

The anniversary typically gets little attention in Japan as authorities don’t want to highlight the country’s past military aggression.

Japan does however commemorate the atomic bombings by the U.S. of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945 that came just before Japan surrendered.

Says all you need to know about Japan's ability to look itself squarely in the eye and come to terms with its past. And from someone who lost relatives in the war in the Pacific and had others as Japanese POW's, Gemba can keep his meaningless "Deep Emotion". It is as worthless as any other Japanese pronouncement, because it lacks any true moral under-pinning and real support by the populace.

Greenpeace charged that Tokyo was siphoning money from disaster victims by spending an extra 2.28 billion yen ($30 million) on beefed up security amid looming battles between the whaling fleet and environmental groups.

Pretty horrible month or so for Japan's image. First an outsider from England exposes Olympus' fraud and shows corporate governance to be a joke. Then TEPCO has to come clean and admit tons of radioactive water has leaked into the Pacific, on the same day Meiji had to announce some citizens had found their milk was contaminated, and, now, of all people, Greenpeace discovers they diverted funds to protect the whalers. If it weren't so incredibly sad, it would be hilarious.

Those governament and private sector offcials never bow. That is the difference.

gauloa -- huh? How does bowing make one bit of a difference? Has it changed anything? No, it hasn't, as you yourself admit by lumping Japan in with other "corrupted countries". In fact, one could argue that bowing and saying "gomenasai" is meaningless and is done simply to quiet any public outrage, so that nothing -- no meaningful changes at least -- will be made.

“The management was rotten to the core and contaminated what was around it, creating in the worst sense a group mentality of the typical salarymen,” the report said in a reference to Japan’s culture of corporate loyalty.

The most succinct description of the cancer that has contaminated Japan Inc. and will ultimately lead to the country's continued decline unless addressed head-on. Rationalizationing that the "ends", like full-employment/stability, justify the means, has screwed up all sense of right and wrong in corporate Japan. And in a global financial world, where Japanese companies must compete for capital, real corporate governance and a strong sense of fiduciary responsibility is a prerequisite.

defending the mission... Show the past videos footages to your children, wonder what they about it? NOT violence?n of their research.

Kwat -- please. I think most children would see the videos of Japan slaughtering the mother whale and her off-spring as un-necessary violence, and what SS is doing as nothing worse than a prank.

The report slammed Olympus for its “low level of transparency and governance” and added: “Many on the board were yea-sayers and we cannot help saying the board had become a mere facade.”

But Edano keeps claiming that Japanese governance is on a par with the U.S. -- hah. The truth is that Olympus is more the rule rather than the exception in Japan, as anyone who has worked in a Japanese company knows. Shacho's are not questioned in Japan and treated like royalty by the employees, including the members of the board, who all are subservient to him, rather than the share holders. But the real question is now that this problem has been identified, will Japan do anything to correct it? For those posters who love to point to Enron as a failure of U.S. governance, that was ten years ago. And strict new laws, like Sarbanes-Oxley have been passed to try to keep such an occurrance from happening again. Will Japan do the same, or simply pretend Olympus is a one-off and continue to bury its head in the sand?

Bad couple of days for U.S. foreign relations. First they kill two dozen Pakastani troops, making an already strained relationship even worse. And then Iran shoots down one of their drones. Clinton is certainly earning her keep.

and heard people saying strong words.

pawatan -- no, really, actually strong words? My gosh, what is Japan coming to? I mean a preventable disaster brought on by decades of corporate greed and lax oversight, which has poisoned a large part of the Tohoku area as well as the Pacific Ocean, has actually got "people saying strong words". Are they different from the millions simply mumbling "shoganai" all the time?

    Justice will come

Not in any significant way or in any reasonable timeframe. Because as soon as the prosectutors would go after the officials at TEPCO, they would break out years of letters, memos and emails from bureaucrats and politicians praising TEPCO for the wonderful job they were doing, as well as all the records regarding the millions of yen they gave to various campaigns. And that would bring Japan Inc. to its knees as the 3-headed monster that is ruining Japan -- corporations, bureaucrats, politicians -- would be be exposed once and for all for all to see.

Worked for four years or so at a company with their offices right near this spot. Always looked forward to this time of year and walked over there as often as I could at lunch to see these trees. One of the truly "naturally" beautiful sights in Tokyo.

pawatan -- as usual, you missed the point. Whether or not it is the same agency is irrelevant (by the way, since you know so much, which agency is that?). My point was that JT had picked this as "commercial of the week", when all it is is a copy of at least a year-old American campaign.

This campaign has been running for well over a year in the U.S. featuring folks like Joe Pesci. All the Japanese agency did is copy it.
