The quality of the print from a digital camera is not as good as a photo taken with a film camera.

I don't think that's entirely true anymore. Maybe if you're talking about a point and shoot or cellphone camera printed off at home vs. 35mm SLR pro printed it might be, but in comparisons between my battered old canon F-1 and my 1ds (3rd gen) - I have yet to see anywhere film gives me an edge in image quality.

I missing putting photos in albums and still get nostalgic for the good old days of film cameras.

There's a recent invention called a "printer" that you should look in to.

hokkaidoguy. Try looking at it this way. Japan needs to diversify her sources of energy and natural resouces. Russia can enable that to happen. This is a win win for both sides.

True, but largely irrelevant. Japan and Russia have been engaged in joint development of energy and national resources since the Soviet days.

You (and the OP) seem to be under the impression that the dispute is a barrier to progress on this front, despite the facts: these initiatives, both private and state backed, have been increasing year on year since the 1980s. There is no reason to assume that they will magically increase further if the dispute is abandoned, nor is there reason to assume that they have been hindered so far.

So let me see if I've got this right:

A nation that hosts US forces is not allowed to display any form of nationalism, nations that did not exist in their current state 150 years ago are not allowed to engage in territorial disputes, and the possibility of monetary gain should outweigh all other considerations.

    Good luck with that.

You might try a less selective reading of history for your next screed.

Considering most Americans seem to think that Pearl Harbor was attacked out of the blue for absolutely no reason whatsoever, this is probably a good thing.

All they have to say is, "He was violent" and it is all over, regardless of the truth.

So.... just like in every western country over the last 20 years.

I've got to wonder what kind of leadership the opposition would have offered as an alternative.

Considering the LDP were the ones who drafted all the legislation concerning nuclear power, and were the ones who wrote off decades of TEPCO violations after they came to light in 2002, perhaps the leadership Kan needs to show right now is a public airing of the LDP-TEPCO relationship, kickbacks and all.

It will take TEPCO at least 30 years to decommission these reactors and at least 1 trillion yen in costs. For those who cannot grasp what a trillion is, 1 trillion seconds is about 32,000 years.

To put in in less esoteric terms, 1 trillion yen is roughly the GDP of Tokyo.

I'm pretty sure a lot of the light beers America turns out would be classed as happoshu.

Don't get too complacent. Keep your emergency pack stocked and ready at the front door.

    Good advice, that.

I'd also suggest taking the time to quake-proof your home: make sure your shelves are stable (you can buy kits at any hardware store to affix them to the wall), make sure that heavy objects are stored in low places - generally look around and ask yourself: if this falls, how much damage will it do?

Storing your glasses and plates under the counter (as opposed to in the overhead cabinets) keeps them more stable - and even if they do slide out, you'll only lose one or two because they're close to the floor. (take a guess how i figured that out...)

I bet there are more Ronny McDs in Japan than there are sushi restaurants

    I'll take that bet.

. I would never go near sushi or sashimi, but most Japanese don't either unless cultural circumstances force them to.

    Riiiiiiiiiiiigt.

Have you ever even been to Japan?

I don't get it : I read that it's totaly possible to decontaminate water. Why don't they do that?

    Time.

Agreed. It's a shame they didn't take the precautions and warnings they were given well beforehand seriously -- might have avoided the current situation altogether.

I don't think you actually read what I wrote.

Unless you're suggesting that every nuclear power plant should have a stockpile of enough concrete to entomb all of their reactors at the ready, in which case I'm calling you out as a shill for the concrete industry ;p

Gee perhaps what was learned from Chernobyl. If the Japanese government and TEPCO had actually taken nuclear scientists advice and not Japanese bureaucrtaic advice, perhaps.

No, I don't think you understand. They required 400,000 cubic meters of concrete and 7,300 tonnes of steel to entomb Chernobyl.

Even if those things could have been produced and delivered on the day of the quake, it would be physically impossible to use them to construct a tomb for the reactor in a fortnight. Concrete needs to set, steel needs to be cut and welded. It's impossible. Not "unlikely", not "difficult", completely impossible. Even with an army of thousands working around the clock.

Seems Japan should have lead shielded this thing and concreted by week two as French, American, UK, and Russian nuclear scientists suggested, but then again in Japan "We Japanese seek Japanese solutions."

    By week two? LOL.

Explain to me how it's possible to entomb a nuclear reactor in concrete in a fortnight. Took 6 months for Chernobyl.

Sometimes when I've complained about how dated using hanko is to friends/colleagues, I've been told a couple of times "forging a signature is easy, forging a hanko is almost impossible!".

Might not be impossible, but I know for a fact I could forge your signiture or your fingerprint a lot easier (and faster) than I could forge your hanko.
