What's all this complaining about N American beers.

That's the legacy, and it's a hard one to live down. It was certainly true 25 years ago, but these days the USA makes the best beers in the world. More microbreweries in the USA than anywhere else in the world, well over a thousand last I heard.

Some people just like to hang on to negative stereotypes.

    Yubaru:

With the price of beer as it is here I get rather upset when I go to an izakaya and they bring me a beer that is 50% foam, and I am paying 500 yen for that one mug.

An Izakaya owner friend of mine let me in on this a few years ago: If you're being served beer with obviously too much head (ie. more than three fingers) again and again, it's a pretty safe bet that either you or someone in your party have done something to piss off the staff. Switch bars or switch to bottles.

Mildly surprised to see how many people are in favor of this despite the volumes of evidence showing that this road leads to significantly higher electricity costs. Without exception.

Simple fix for Japan. Establish formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan, recognize the Tibetan gov't in exile, and above all else - stop sending bloody aid money to the PRC.

Oh, and mods? The giant red floating banner absolutely sucks balls. Using Pagedown to scroll through articles no longer works - you've got to pagedown and then scroll back up.

Senkaku was granted by the Empress Dowager Cixi under official imperial Seal to her Chief Minister of the Court, Sheng XuanHuan in 1893

Sheng Xuanhuai, I think you'll find.

That document has been around since the 40s, and pretty much everyone (Chinese scholars, Taiwanese scholars) agrees it's as fake. No date, the style is wrong, one copy only with no references in the archives.

    Until Ishihara started all this

I know Ishihara is the favorite whipping boy of a lot of you, but at least make an attempt to get the timelines right. In 2006, the Chinese started to send activists to the islands. In 2010 one of them rammed a coast guard vessel, and the captain was arrested - which led to violent demonstrations in China and that whole rare earth element blockade thing. All of that happened well before Ishihara was approached by the family to purchase the islands.

Japan needs to build on those islands NOW.

Not just build on, they need to get JSDF personnel stationed down there. China has been playing the same game with India for a couple of years - and then on April 15th they decided to just set up a base 6 miles inside Indian territory at Ladakh. That situation is just about hitting the boiling point right now.

Only a matter of time before China decides to do the same in the Senkakus.

danny bloom: CORRECTION - Instant noodles were invented in Japan by a Taiwanese immigrant named Mr Wu who took the name of ''Momofuku Ando'' when he got his citizenship papers 15 years after landing in Japan, --15 years he had to wait--,

    a correction to your correction:

Because he was from Taiwan - a colony of Japan at the time - citizenship was not an issue. He was free to move between Taiwan and Japan, and as you've already noted he owned businesses in both places while attending school in Japan. After the war, it took a couple of years to sort out the legalities of the residents of former colonies, and they didn't start the citizenship process until late 1947. So in reality he had to wait a few months for his paperwork to clear.

To illustrate Abe's point about the definition of "aggression" depending on the point of view, Japan should release all the files on Park's father to the media.

Start with the transcripts of his initial interview when he VOLUNTEERED for the Japanese Imperial army, his service record, the distinctions in the field that had him recommended to the Imperial War College, earning his commission as an officer and his service (again voluntary) in the Kwantung Army.

Once that's done, they can release the names and service records of all the other thousands of Koreans who volunteered for military service, with a special note for those who served with distinction.

Perhaps then the Koreans will understand that they don't have the right to whine about Japan's aggression any more than Austria has the right to whine about being a victim of Germany.

smithinjapan: "And why is Abe trying to rescind these apologies you boast of?"

He isn't trying to "rescind" anything. He made the comment that he - like nearly every other PM since the end of the war - was planning on releasing an updated statement, something that has not occurred yet.

Despite not having seen the statement, and despite having absolutely no indication of what might be in it IF it ever actually comes to pass, you have at every opportunity proclaimed that the statement will rescind, delete, take back, nullify, whitewash or otherwise render invalid every statement that came before. That's a fact, and anyone who wants to search on your username will see it - and your reactions to being called out on it.

So, as you're asking questions, here's one for you: Why do you persist in repeating something that only exists in your imagination as though it were a fact?

Moonraker: Ah, I see, CH3CHO, Japanese whaling research is uniquely different from what the rest of the world knows as research. Now I get it.

It's only unique if you have no experience in the sciences.

It's basic data collection. The Australians use the same methods and theories to measure scallop stocks - and yes, they call it scientific research.

Most people without experience in the sciences see the words "scientific research whaling" and expect a cancer cure or publications in Nature for some reason I've never been able to fathom. Do you demand the same from farmers growing research crops? How about your own government, do you demand to see peer-review of their data-sets on the resources they manage?

dcog: Is there some reason to why Japan doesn't hunt whales in open defiance to the whaling moratorium like Iceland and Norway?

Iceland and Norway aren't whaling in defiance of the moratorium - they are whaling under objection. They both carried out their own scientific research, decided that the stocks had recovered enough, lodged an official objection to the moratorium and got on with the hunting. All legal and above board.

They'll be happy that Japan had such a lousy haul again this year - they both export to Japan.

Doesn't matter what I think - or what anyone commenting on the internet thinks.

It's a done deal. If it isn't legal where you live, eventually it will be.

The bottom line is that there is no legal reason to deny same-sex marriage, and likewise there are no laws that can be passed to prevent it that will stand up to legal challenge.

You can accept it and get on with you lives, or fight it and watch the lawyers get rich.

Yubaru: "Only problem is that they wouldn't pass a safety inspection in the US."

That's kind of the point, really. Safety inspections, regional emissions standards, registration class and tax levels - these are all non-tariff trade barriers.

America wants Japan to get rid of theirs - but will America do the same?

Sorry to get all geezer on you, but when I was a lad and FTAs were just a dream, Michigan didn't need right to work legislation. The Canada-US auto pact, followed by the CDA-US FTA and then NAFTA killed Michigan. That's a fact. Production shifted to where it was cheapest - Canada, then Mexico.

Yes, food became cheaper, and there was a bit more variety on the shelves. But wages never really increased, and the good jobs never came back. And it's been like that for so long that people are willing to work for half of what they worked for 25 years ago - and you seem convinced that's a good thing. It's not.

Yes, it means variety, increased choice, lower prices and efficient application of resources. But all of those things have another side: lower pay, lower profit margins, downsizing, and relocating production.

Is the yen undervalued or is the US$ overvalued?

Probably both, really. Thing is, the US can't have it both ways, and should be careful what it demands on this one. If Japan has no exemptions, it should follow that the USA should also have no exemptions. If we're talking automotive, then the USA needs to drop the 2.5% duty on light trucks, the 25% duty on trucks AND get rid of all the non-tariff barriers in the US market - for example.

Get rid of the regulatory barriers that prevent Daihatsu from selling kei trucks in the US.

Most of JT's readership will probably laugh at that one, but that's Ford and GM'S biggest nightmare. A bare bones work truck, great on gas, dirt cheap to maintain, proven on farms and in the cities - and you can buy THREE for the price of an F-150. I know for a fact they'll sell - I've referred clients to companies who specialize in exporting used kei trucks to Canada, and they've bought literally dozens.

JeffLee:No. Hyundai packed up and left in frustration a few years ago. It has better things to do than stick around "the poor man of Asia."

For decades the Japanese saw Hyundais as re-badged Mitsubishis - which they were, for the most part. When the partnership came to an end, and Hyundai started building its own cars, the Japanese marketplace was the only one in the world with that public perception to overcome.

The challenge was to erase the image of being a re-badged Mitsubishi and cultivate the image of a new, modern, successful designer and manufacturer in a marketplace where they no longer had the support of a domestic partner.

They responded to that challenge by doing nothing. No marketing, no dealership tie-ups, nothing. The result? It was such a PITA to even find a dealer that no one bothered. You can't buy what's not for sale. And because everyone was still under the impression that they were just re-badged Mitsubishis, that's exactly where their remaining potential customers went.

Knox Harrington: Rather, it is probably not worth the effort due to domestic production encouragement.

Count the European cars on your drive to work tomorrow. Then count the number of European car ads you see on TV when you get home tomorrow night. Then count the number of European car dealerships within 50km of where you live.

European car makers have put in the effort - and they sell cars. The Big 3 haven't, and they don't - with the exception of Chrysler...thanks to Fiat.

No Miso: Ford and GM have always tried to see cars manufactured for the US, meaning oversized for Japan, and designed for cruising on highways.

    This argument doesn't fly.

My Toyota Crown - hardly a rare car on the roads - is easily comparable in size to anything that Ford or GM or Chrysler turn out. I've also owned a Land Cruiser 80 series that was certainly comparable in size to a similar vintage Chev suburban. They might not be the most practical if you live in a heavy urban area, but I had very few problems navigating Japan's roads with either - and I'm not the only one.

Poor reputation for quality, poor reputation for customer support and an almost complete lack of advertising/marketing to correct those impressions are the reasons no one is buying.
