Then help them do that.

After a 9.0 quake, one of the largest tsunami on record, and floating in the sea for 19 days, that house looks remarkably intact. Roof doesn't seem deformed, walls don't look to be buckling, and there's even glass in the windows.
That's bloody impressive construction work. My hat's off to whoever built that place.

Yeah, it's like they always say: If you're going to quit smoking, the best time to quit is when you're under massive amounts of stress.

Not seeing that name come up in a FB search, could you check that's right? Got some vacation time coming up, kind of like to do something useful with it.

people need to take a break. over the first few days, it was impossible to turn away from the news, and I noticed a lot of people who were seriously on edge as a result.
take a break, everyone. there's going to be aftershocks for a couple of months, and it won't help if you're on edge. turn off the TV and the computer, and go spend the day with family or friends. have a couple of beers. got to take care of your mental health.

If you look at your gas meter, you'll see a button on the side. It works kind of like a circuit breaker. Mine has only ever gone if the quake is over 6.5 or so. You'll hear a little "pop" sound when it does - that cuts off all the gas flow.
IIRC, to reset it after it goes, you need to push it in and hold it for about 5 seconds. Usually it's a good idea to wait an hour or so before you reset it, to make sure there's no gas leaks in the area.

Thats just not true. Most of the smaller cities that were destroyed were fishing towns.

Jesus wept. You're complaining about THAT?
They left a window of 40 minutes in which your power might go off for 3 hours, to account for shifting loads around a grid that's roughly comparable to that of Australia. If you're waiting for more precision than that, you're not going to find it. Not here, not anywhere.
The way people were going on about it here I was expecting that people were freezing in the dark for 12 hours at a shot while their neighbours had power.
Over half a million people are in shelters tonight, and many times that don't know when their power will be coming on.
Suck it up.

I can't comment on the rolling blackouts, because I'm not in that area, but if it's just a case of not knowing whether or not your power is going to go out... no offense intended here, as I don't think you're complaining, but I don't really consider that important considering everything going on right now.
You've been given warning that the power might go out. I spent the weekend helping friends shovel mud out of their living room. A little perspective.

The main complaint about TEPCO seems to be that they haven't been providing enough information in English. If you're one of the people complaining about that, maybe you could volunteer your translation skills to them.
From what I've seen so far, everyone has been doing a stellar job in an insanely complicated situation.
Let's be serious here: there is no realistic way that this could be handled better so far - at least not without the entire population of Japan having five or six dress rehersals.
Edano has been a rock. When this is over, he's the next PM.

go to city hall or your ward office and ask what they're doing. everyone is taking donations at the moment, and those that aren't yet will be by the end of today.

Been there, and I'm sure that McD's will do something here - and they won't be the only corporation to provide assistance in all of this.
Some people seem to want to forget that businesses - even the ones that you might not like - are what puts food on people's tables. The blackouts have to be structured to affect people's jobs the least - because without that, people are in very serious trouble.

No, I think you committed a crime. And now you've profited from that action by publishing your "horror story" under your real name.

I think you'll find that "forced labour" is used for both countries when talking about POWs. "Slave labour" is used to refer to civilians.

Yes.
Because if you're in a theater with proper fire exits and a proper crowd control limit in place (unlike the 2 or 3 times people have died from such an act), people are going to look around, realize there's no fire, and go back to watching the movie or whatever, until they smell smoke or hear a fire alarm.
Similarly, if you yell "shark" at the beach, people will get out of the water. And then go back in.
Joking about a bomb on a plane depends on the joke, I guess. If it's "Is that a pipe bomb in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?" I guess that might be worth a soft drink in the lap, but certainly not a criminal charge.
The fact is that these examples - most notably the "Fire in a crowded theater" chestnut - have only ever been trotted out to constrain other more important freedoms of expression. That one was first used to stop people from handing out flyers to oppose the draft during WW1. They've been used again and again since then as covers for censorship on the grounds that people don't have the ability to make decisions on their own.
