There is no such thing as "killing in the name of god" in e.g. the Jain religion.

Maybe not, but that hasn't stopped the Janist community from assuming majority control of the international diamond trade over the last decade - a trade which includes blood diamonds.

I'd consider a religious group that preaches non-violence and respect for all things while making millions exploiting other people to be a destructive force.

200 million = 2 million dollars, total scam for a country the size of Japan, where does all the money really go? Certainly not the winner.

There are multiple winners. I think it was 75 for the first prize, 300 or so for the second prize (100M), and something in the area of 7,000 people get the third prize (1M)... and so on down to something like 75 million free tickets. I'm sure there's a chart online somewhere you could google.

If they were up in early October, I'd consider that early. November seems about par for the course.

jeffrey: the deal inked recently between tesla and toyota is for the production of electric Rav 4s (using a combination of tesla and toyota tech) for the international market. From what I've heard, the goal is to keep costs within a few percentage points of a standard model... which would fit into your price range.

On a motorcycle = guilty. He probably purposely ran into the oncoming vehicle. Track down his widow and make her pay for damages to the poor cager's car. That driver, poor guy, is probably going to need some kind of therapy for what the nasty biker did to him. Maybe JT can do some kind of a benefit to cover his PTSD treatments?

Gurukun: And what is a VIP Customer? Carries alot of cash? Get's to do more than look?

What, seriously? Come on, this is Hooters. It's not an opium den. They're about as controversial as a PG rated movie.

VIP customers, if memory serves, are frequent customers. I seem to remember having a card of some kind that gave me discounts and invites to events.

Great place to gather after work, have a few beers and some wings, and watch the game. If that's not your cup of tea, that's fine - but don't make this into something it isn't.

    hokkaidoguy...been to Sapporo????

Yes - and even calling Sapporo "overdeveloped" is a bit of a stretch. The greater Sapporo area is barely 2 million people - and once you get out of the city, especially heading east, the trend is obviously towards contraction rather than expansion. Tell the few remaining people in Yubari that they're overdeveloping their town...

stop building in the habitats and this might now happen....over development everywhere...what do we expect????

Please direct me to the "over development" in Hokkaido. Seems like I've been missing something.

Japanese text books use this as proof that they were against the Nazis instead of staunch allies.

Care to give some specific examples? I'm hitting the shops today for some new study material.

No it doesn't. It stems from a lack of food.

Cleo, have you ever been to the Shari area? Had you even heard of it before this story cropped up?

Pretty much everything from Shari to the tip of the Shiretoko is protected wilderness. UNESCO heritage site. If you ever venture up this way, that's the first thing you'll notice. The second is that there are a hell of a lot of bears, because no one hunts them. Likewise deer. Their populations are exceeding the limits of what the ecosystem can support.

The natural solution would be for them to starve to death. In favour of that?

Ah, what's the point? talking to vegans about this stuff is like talking to creationists about evolution.

I don't know why, but Japan seems to lack the resources and/or professionals to deal with these bears. I know there are many bear/human interactions in the states and Canada, but most do not end with the bear being shot dead.

Canada and the USA have places to put the bears.

In this case - Shari - there are two options: 1) drop them in the heart of the Shiretoko - where they have probably wandered out of (Shiretoko has one of the largest bear populations on earth), or 2) drop them in the Akan national park - with a sizeable bear population of its own.

In either case, they are still very close to civilization, and could still pose a threat.

    Proaction, not reaction

How about this: make it easier to get a hunting license, and introduce annual quotas to reduce the population? That's how the bear population has been kept under control for centuries up here - the current problem stems from the lack of predators.

cleo: They couldn't use a tranquilliser gun because....?

...because they don't have anywhere to put the bears once they have been tranquilized. Bears that have become used to getting food from human areas will return to those sources - and bears that have discovered how easily glass breaks are a significant danger to the public.

In Canada, it's fairly easy (and common) to trap or tranquilize a bear and haul it 3 or 4 hundred km out of the way before releasing it in an area where it will no longer pose a threat to people, but in Japan - it's impossible to find a location remote enough.

Stop going to chain restaurants with automated kitchen and bar service, and you will be surprised how many of these problems disappear.

Love mine, especially for business. An example from this morning: I was able to pull up a fairly obscure document for a client to have a look at, and then email a copy to his phone and to his office.

Sounds pretty simple, until you realize that all this happened while we were walking from our cars to a meeting on the 10th floor of a building. Could not have done that with a laptop - they aren't something you can walk around and use.

Mine has replaced my laptop. I use my proper computer for any major data entry and actual computing, and the ipad for everything that requires portability.

Interesting quote from Watson on the SS homepage in their "Media and News" section:

We still will be providing you with funds for the Ady Gil despite having spent a half a million on your defence and despite the fact that the vessel was lost because you were negligent. We have put the best face possible on it but let’s be honest Pete, there is no excuse for not having your vessel under control in the vicinity of a hostile ship. The Shonan Maru #2 was able to destroy your ship because you allowed them to do so. You took no evasive action. You and your crew were busy thumbing your noses at the Japanese and ironically laughing at how ineffective they were. You lost the ship Pete and if you were in the Navy you would have been court marshalled for what you allowed to happen.

LOL. Turns out the crew of the Ady Gil were to blame after all...

@papasmurfinjapan "I won't employ a smoker. Yes, it's discriminatory, but I don't care." that seems like you really limiting your self and your company.

Doesn't matter, really. People that short-sighted either wind up getting sued into the ground or going bankrupt. I would be worried about working for anyone like that - even if I quit smoking, I'm sure there's something distasteful in my lifestyle that would warrant harassment from management like that.

We have a smoking room that all of the smokers maintain. Got one of those smoking tables with the air filter built in, as well as two large windows and an exhaust fan, and a daily rotation for cleaning responsibilities.

Not in so many words. Anyway, it's amazing how much English people suddenly remember when confronted with a 6'2" shouty bald man wearing gloves with carbon-fiber reinforced knuckles.
