Yep, I agree with some posters here. I wouldnt want Japan to be suddenly all English speaking. It would be boring. This April I am going to a ryokan that does not have a English website - i'm assuming they dont speak English. I got a friend of mine to book it for me. I look forward to my Lost in Translation moments. In my previous 6 visits, I've never had problems with getting around all over Japan. And yes, there are guides everywhere you go. Even Tokyo has a famous one called Tokyo Free Guide. I think these students are doing it to practice their English. Regardless of what their motives are, I still think it's good for those who need them.

I wonder if they came on the PA and yell at her to stand behind the yellow line. Sometimes when I am in the shinkansen station, they yell at me - and I'm not even talking about those yellow lines parallel to the track. Talking about those at the very front - sometimes i want to take a pic of the train (front view) - one time, I didnt move, so they spoke to me in English over the PA. (I'm Asian so they thought I was Japanese) haha. I wonder if I dont move, they will speak to me in Chinese... I should try that.. :)

Always stand well back of the yellow line.. The ones in Japan are actually further back then the ones here in Canada, i guess they have to take into account shinkansens. But this woman probably had too much to drink.

i think there are a lot of REALLY amateur photographers.. or can you even call them that? Almost, if not all point and shoot digital camera has at least ISO 800 now, and that is totally sufficient for taking a nice picture without flash...at night! I havent been to the tuna auction, but I'm sure is not darker than night photography. Too lazy to wake up that early for the tuna auction. hehe.
