cleo and Tamarama talk like they are President and Vice-President of the world. In reality, just leftists. Calling people stupid if they don't share your views is what is stupid. (I enjoyed whale sashimi twice these past two weeks thanks to the dead business of whales, or was I just dreaming?)

Japan is not selfish, Japan is the best member of the IWC, doing the only serious research for whale management. Anti-whalers should not belong to the IWC. It is selfish for them to belong to the IWC if they don't like whaling.

Wurthington, No no no, you see when other nations wish to hunt whales also, they should cooperate with nations that hunt whales already. Together, they can keep the number sustainable. That is why the IWC exists, to enable such cooperation for sustainable whaling. Japan is not the only member of the IWC, many nations have agreed to it. I guess the sustainable number is around 5,000 ~ 10,000 each year at least. But to understand the number well, research is required constantly, since whales are difficult to count precisely.

Wurthington, 935 minke whales each year is not many. Minke whales are not endangered, and Japan is catching them legally. See the international convention for the regulation of whaling. If you read it carefully, I'm sure you can see that Japan's research is legal, and in the spirit of whaling like the convention defines.
I did not say such a thing. My idea is that species that would go extinct if they were hunted, should not be hunted. We can agree this is simple common sense. But minke whales are not one of these species.

marcelito, anyone who believes Japan is not whaling for research has either failed to check the facts or is living in denial.

Cletus, there is no breach of any treaty by Japan. SS says many things, you should learn to spot which parts are lies. If you assume it is all lies, you will be pretty close to correct understanding.

Wurthington,
But if every country in the world were to follow Japan's lead, Japan would not need to continue it's research program as it is. If other nations wish also to conduct serious research they should funnel their resources together with Japan.
What is selfish is for nations who don't eat whales to tell Japanese people and others that do that they should stop. Minority cultures should not be forced to do as the majority does, this is common sense for anyone who understands human rights.

They were "casual staff", just working at the place does not guarantee us that their employer appropriately trained them according to regulations etc. It is harsh to assume these workers are guilty from the start.
I saw a Sydney Morning Herald story which reveals that the abattoir was inspected 4 times in 2011. No problems were identified.
If we are to believe that the media focus on these workers is not the main reason why it is regarded now as a problem, it may indicate many problems besides just with the workers.

Time for Australia to pull it's socks up and stop moaning at other countries about methods of food production.

To be seeded 24 and make the best 8, and lose to world no. 4 is a great effort. Kei had some long matches prior to this (beating 6th seed Tsonga) while Murray won his last match by partial default too, which wouldn't have helped Kei's chances. Kei's ATP ranking may possibly break into the high teens with this effort. It's going to be a good year!

It sounds like it was a tough 5-setter, but then fatigue will be getting to all the big guns. Guys like Federer, Nadal, and Djoko have all gone to finals before, so it'll be a big ask for Kei to join them in the semis this time, but there is absolutely hope! Ganbare Kei!

Why do some commenters have a problem with what other people eat? Do whale eaters tell you people what to eat?
If you don't want to eat whales, just don't. No need to deny others their rights.
Japan's research and the right to catch whales is internationally recognised. The whales are plentiful, you don't need to worry about them going endangered because of some tiny number being caught each year.
What you do need to worry about is the eco-terrorism being tolerated by Australia.

Tsonga is hot and cold. Kei will have to match his power, and with any luck catch him off his peak. When Tsonga is on songa he's pretty hard to stop. These ATP points will probably give Kei a new personal best ATP ranking. Top 10 for Kei in 2012, ganbare!!

Kei hadn't played Ebden before, and he seems to be feeling some nerves and extra pressure with his seeding and having to live up to it against the guys down the ranks. Didn't see the game, but it looks like experience helped him turn the game around and close it out as he is capable of starting. Roll on AirK!

Your comments stating that SS people are signing up and willing to give their lives for SS publicity does makes them sound like cultists. What a weird thing to give one's life for.

You make SS sound like a cult group, as well as a group of eco-terrorists.
So I am not surprised to see the Australian media turn negative towards this group, recently.

SSCS eco-terrorists know full well they are not playing bumper-cars.
Keep away from the ship, and they will not be hit with bamboo sticks. Only anti-whalers seem to struggle to understand this simple thing.

Japan not only has the best whale researchers, best cuisine, but also the best martial arts. How else could the crew have poked the eco-terrorist in the head with a bamboo stick, not once but twice?
SS are happy to follow, harass, and attempt to disable vessels legally navigating through the seas, but complain when they themselves come under surveillance and deliberately put a small boat out to try to prevent this because the Japanese side is prepared to defend their vessel from such attacks.
SS would not have such a "problem" if they stuck to protest activities, rather than illegal acts of piracy and eco-terrorism. Can the SS supporter explain why SS does not stick to protest activities?
