He did not do this for publicity, as it was unannounced. The Associated Press is present for every transfer of remains, so he would obviously be seen by them. Even the story on CNN and ABC websites are filed by the AP.
I don't think any one of us could imagine the weight of a decision like this. President Obama sees reports every day about what is going on, but doesn't get to see the human side very often. I think it was a very good thing for him to view the transfer.

Most people would rather the subways and trains run later, but I would prefer if they began earlier. When I have a 7:05 flight to Narita, I have to get a hotel in Fukuoka, since no train will get me into the city on time.

I agree with dolphingirl, but just being 9 months into office, Obama is very busy with some other issues right now. Just because he doesn't change the policy immediately doesn't mean that he won't. Bill Clinton got into a big mess when he tried to fully integrate gays into the military, giving us the present policy.

The simple lack of infrastructure in Nagasaki is enough to be excluded from the games. The "Nagasaki Airport" is far from Nagasaki -- in Omura. There are some hotels, but not nearly enough for an event like the Olympics.
As bamboohat and neverknow2 said, they're playing the victim and wanting sympathy to get the games. Give it to a developed city like Fukuoka. It is half-way between the two cities and has good infrastructure.

Tokyo should not bid for the 2020 Olympics. Let another city like Fukuoka bid again. The timing of the drunk driving incident by a city worker doomed that bid, but I think that it would make a great venue for the Olympics.

If this instance is so "extremely regrettable," maybe Toyota should fork over some "We're sorry" cash to the relatives of the deceased.

I just saw a live report from Yanagawa (where his ex-wife lives) and it says that he took Japanese citizenship 4 years ago. However, the US Consulate is treating him as an American. This could really get interesting.

It was on CNN today -- maybe it WILL catch the attentions of some people.
The new government wants to change the relationship between Japan and the US.... this may just the way to do it.

How could the father not wake up while getting his hands cut off? He may have been stupid-drunk and not felt any pain. If the kid's allegations are true, I see no problem with this action. Any parent who abuses their child gets anything that's coming to them.

Gadhafi has been saving up 40 years for this speech. He ranted on about various issues, including John F. Kennedy's assassination. As the head of the Libyan government, it is his right to speak at this yearly event, but has not done so until now.

It was a great speech and is being called the best of his presidency thus far. So many Americans have no health insurance, or are dropped by their insurance company when they become ill. It should be everyone's right to affordable health care. Some talk about the "death squads", but people neglect to realize that it is the insurance companies who are the "death squads". Those with serious illnesses and little or no money cannot afford adequate care, and why? Because they are denied or dropped by these insurance companies.
On the other hand, Rep. Wilson, at the least, should make an apology on the floor of the House for his actions during the speech. There is even talk that he may have broken the rules of the House.

So much for Islam being a "religion of peace". If the cow is a symbol of stupidity, then were the Muslims inferring that the Hindus are stupid? Either way, it would be insulting to the Hindus, wouldn't it?
