"There are too many other countries-the U.S., Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Korea, Canada, Mexico, Venezuela etc. that have enough talent to beat Japan on a given day,"

But what about 3 given days ? Remember it took Japan three tries to finally beat the Koreans at the WBC, and Japan never did beat the US ! I agree wholeheartedly, Japan simply isn't very good... no matter who is at the helm !

poor Japanese having a rough go on the diamond this summer. And for the record the US team from Hawaii beat the Mexican representative in the final 11-3. That makes it 4 years in a row now that the Americans have won the Little League "World" Series !

    Bebert please,

The US beat Japan 7-0 on August 15th. They played again in the semifinals August 20th with the USA winning again 4-1. It wasn't until the USA played Japan for the third time did they eventually lose.

"I feel London will bring in a more homegrown feeling to the Olympics with less of the fakery and will be more in line with the real spirit of the Olympics."

Honestly now ! London is already off to a very embarrassing start. Who in admiral halseys good name thought it would be a good idea to have David Beckam represent the city of London by steppeing off a bus and kicking a football into the crowd ? Fact is England/the UK hasn't fielded a football team at the Olympics since 1964. The main reason being that England and the rest of the UK simply don't get along. They are not "united" enough to even slap together a simple squad to play in the Olympics. too many egos, too much pride, and way too many viscious ugly games between the nations to even consider a team to represent the UK. Now, is this "in line with the real spirit of the Olympics" ? I dare say no ! England better get its collective poop together real quick. Another snafu like this and the world will be questioning the IOC's decision again.

I tend to agree with those posters that question the round robin "page format" used at the Olympics. I am a firm believer that sports mirrors life in general. Getting second chances is one thing, but three ? Japan seems fortunate to have won this. I'll leave it at that.

Enjoyable closing ceremony from this posters viewpoint. My only complaint... why do the Japanese athletes have to yak on their cell phones even at historical events like the olympics ? Sheesh !

    Pizzaboy,

"I looked and couldn't find the game on tv, an absolute farce that it wasn't shown (if i'm correct in assuming)."

You are right ! Non of the basketball tournement was shown on local Japanese TV. If you wanted to see it you would have had to invest more than 20,000 yen and then subject yourself to "The NHK Guy" pounding on your door once a month. An absolute travesty that neither the mens or womens tournement was televised. Plenty of badminton, judo, and ping pong though. Hic ! In any case, excellent reuslt all around from the Americans. 110 medals in chinas crib is awesome ! So much for the misguided who declared China would run away with the overall medal count. The USA is as strong as ever, reclaiming not only this basketball title but also the decathlon and the unofficial title of "worlds greatest athlete" ! Hooray, USA !

What a shame Japan chose not to show this on local television. But then again Japan wasn't competing, thus is their logic. If the Japanese don't participate, well, it doesn't exist. Kinda answers that falling tree making a sound in the forest question.

Another excellent display of teamwork by the Americans. Safe to say their previous misadventures in the relays was nothing more than a fluke. Good to see them bounce back !

Freckleface, well said. I too got a big laugh out of the indepth analysis of the "sekai takai sutriki zonu" ! what a bunch of sour grapes that whole story turned out to be. Funny, the Koreans, especially the Yom. Giants Lee, didn't seem to have any problem with the strike zone ! I was about to wet my pants over the whole story so I decided to change channels, only to find a half-assed news program going on and on about "what poor sports" the chinese fans were. How they were booing anything the Japanese did. The story then went on to say that chinese fans attempted to distract Japanese athletes as they prepared for their events or turn to compete. I always knew that Japanese athletes were poor sports but now I know where they get. The nations collective mind set remains nothing short of "us versus them". I was shocked to listen to Hoshino's post game comments about the loss to the Americans. Not one positive comment about the team that just beat them. And one of the Japanese players actually made a very disparaging remark by saying, "how could we lose to a bunch of non-professionals" ? Japan needs lessons in sportsmenship, no doubt about it.
