How busy are the train track in Nikko? I've been there once and don't think I even saw a train track. If I have to guess, this is not an accident.

Yeah, right, I bet it'll only be China good news and nothing about the famine and droughts that's going on here at the moment. Their reporters should come out here to the hinterlands of China where I live and truly see what's going on instead of reporting what luxury brands city Chinese are into now. They should report on the amount of everyday nonsense and stupidity that goes on in China because of their crappy education and lack of common sense. Anybody with 2 brain cells to rub together here can set up a factory making cheap stuff while ripping off their workers to get rich and buy houses and imported luxuries while more than half their countrymen/women live in abject poverty. This is not a rant against China. I just tell it as it is without the pretty propaganda.

I think the only truth here is the neatness thing. The messiest people I've ever lived with(not including my wife) are all female. I've lived in basements with 4 guys and I've shared bigger houses with an all girl crew and I got to say guys get the dishes done more regularly and the rug stays cleaner longer. It's not just Japanese girls, it's across all races and cultures. Mind you, these are single girls I'm talking about, not married or moms.

The time, the time....darn. Isn't that just too much of a coincidence? Was buddy in a hurry? Maybe to get somewhere so he can start hitting his ozzie? Or were there friends waiting for him? Dude, you have to make it here for 4:20, and buddy realized he spent too much time playing with the iPads at the Apple store cause he was all zoned out and had to rush. Man, in some provinces of some countries I would not mention here, but I'm sure at that particular time, even the cops are taking a tea break.

To the people taking this opportunity to bash China just because it's Chinese news, I got to say you people got class and probably would do fine as a SS guard back in WW2 in Austwitz gassing the state's enemies or information extractor at Abu Ghraib. Victims of disasters are the same everywhere. Instead of expressing sympathy and condolensces to the people who perished, you took the time to bash the 'skill' of Chinese construction. For the 'mericans(which the majority of us on here are), this is akin to foreigners pointing out how shoddy the WTC towers construction were the day it collapsed. Sympathy and generosity goes a long ways, people. You just never know when you're are going to be needy enough to be on the receiving end yourself, yeah, even you anonymous brave armchair internet commentator hiding behind your screen handle and proxy servers.

People, this is stupid. It's a waste of a Saturday, instead, do it on a Monday or midweek and tell your boss it's for a patriotic thing. Free day off, everybody wins. What with that pic of Liu, btw? It's like going to a protest against Walmart and you have a 'Sony Sucks' sign. Cohesiveness, people, you got to stick to a topic else it's just confusing.

I think China should have it's version of the Nobel and give out to awards to people who expose the lies and manipulations of the US and other western governments, like the dude who runs whatreallyhappened.com and give recognition to people ignored by the MSM like Indian rights activists or inner city volunteers which would highlight the scum and decay going on in Western societies. Just saying. With all this China bashing because people are so blinded by the msm and just because people are just so freaking stoopid that they actually think CNN and Faux is the news, wtf....

    @mtngal:

Um, that may be true if you live under a totalitarian government, but in a democracy? not so much (thankfully).

Did the protests everywhere stopped the US and the 'coalition' from the shockandawe show in Iraq and Afghanistan? Nope. That just proves my point. China is not the only one doing it. There are a few textbook cases in current news. When a power is rising, it'll feel it can do whatever it wants. And it will. And remember China had a good few milleniums and a couple hundred sh!tty years. They were at the top once before in this part of the world anyways, and they want that spot once again. If only the Japanese had a time machine to go back in time and instead of invading China, they worked with China to kick out the Western imperialists which was the main Chinese goal at that time. Chinese kids would be learning Japanese in school right now and look up to Japan as a great big brother or at least significant and trusted partner instead of learning about Japan as a hated enemy to this day from CCCP sponsored and produced patriotic true historical weekly drama series bs. I know, I live in China and my wife is Japanese. But you know what, what we're talking about here is not even news here. Perhaps I live in the boonies, but still...I think a lot of people are making a big deal about this incident and people in China, the everyday folks anyways, just don't care. It's just a couple slow news week, people. The next major environmental disaster will make all this disappear. So move on, nothing to see here.

This reminds me of all the peaceniks and libs protesting back in '03 to try to stop the Iraq war. People, hippies, antiwar-riors, there's nothing you could do to stop a major power to do what it wants.

I was holding out for a second gen iPad but my parents came visit and bought one for their grandkids. I call it the family computer. A 5, heck, a 2 year old can pick it up and use it pretty much right away. I'm not gonna get into a Mac vs. Win debate here, but to those that's saying the iPad doesn't pack enough power in there and how you can get a full win7 home os on a net book, well, I hope you're happy with yer net book. Anyways, my fave apps so far: VLC Player, PvZ(buy something else if you value your free time), Xe currency converter, goskywatch(it's free, get it and be blown away even if you're not into astronomy), airvideo(you do need a pretty powerful computer for this one but it's great for those with 16g ipads), vnc lite(will upgrade to the full version, it's cheap and does what I need) and Bookman for my books and comics(PDF, cbr, cbz, rar files). There's tons of apps out there and while a lot of them are total time wasters, there are also lots that'll make your life easier and make waiting in line/traffic more bearable. But don't get one now, wait for the second gen, I promise you it'll be better in a lot of ways, ok, maybe you won't be able to jailbreak it right away......

We haven't bought Sony products in over a decade and we're glad for it. Back in '99 I bought my last MD player, 3 or 4 months later it stopped recording. So I took it to a local electronic repair shop in Miyazaki. They took a week, told me I needed a new laser for 4man yen. A new player is like 3man yet. I declined the replacement and they charged me 2,000 yen to look at the thing and tell me the exact reason I know was wrong with the unit. I went back to cd's which was a pain. In 2003, I bought my first Mac after being off computers for nearly a decade. It was intuitive and easy to use. Later that year I got my first iPod, a 3rd gen 40g, it only just died recently. One day, I plugged it into my friend's win pc which is a no no for a Mac iPod of that era and it killed my hd. A week later I was in Japan with my randomly self erasing iPod. My heart was broken, iPods were rare in those days and they were expensive. So I was in Tokyo and I wanted to visit the first Japn Apple store they recently opened up in Ginza. I made an appointment at the Genius Bar, showed up way early and played with all the cool stuff in there for a while. Then it was time for my appointment. I produced my by that time making loud whirring noises iPod. I showed it to the guy and told him I have a -36 problem or something when plugged into the computer. He looked at me and told me that a common windows iPod problem. I kinda nodded and he asked me where I bought it. I got it in HK almost a year ago, he entered the serial and told me that I'm 3 weeks from my warranty expiring and there's nothing they could do about it except giving me a brand new iPod. I signed my name on a couple pieces of paper and the genius handed me a new iPod minus accessories, of course. I was so stoked, new iPod and all. Sony never did that for me. 2 weeks ago, my parents picked up for my wife a brand new MBP and an iPad for the kids in Singapore. My parents, they don't know anything about computers. So they took the box back to their hotel room, took apart the packaging and packed everything in their suitcases. The box, in a one in a million eff-up didn't come with a magsafe power adapter and my parents didn't know it was missing. They flew to China where we live, gave the MBP to my wife, she goes to plug it in and realized the adapter is not there. My parents are meticulous people and they don't leave things behind and they remembered there was an square empty space where the adapter was supposed to be placed. So I called the store in Singapore where they got it, talked to the sales guy who transferred me to his manager and they told me it's not their problem. So dead end there. Next I called Apple in China and tried to buy an adapter. They don't have any for sale, at least not for my wife's new gen, they redesigned the adapter but the power is still the same. Anyways, buddy at Apple China gave me another toll free number to call, I got to talk to an English speaking rep who by coincidence is in Singapore cause their English call center for Asia is there. I explained my dilemna and told him how it's akin to buying to Ferrari, you paid for it, signed the papers, jump in the car, and dude, where are my keys. And it's like sorry, sir, they're still in Italy or something. He took my details, asked for the serial and told me I'll be contacted shortly. Shortly as in 20 minutes later, the manager of customer relations Asia called me personally and apologized for the mistake and have one sent out to me right away. She sincere and apologetic, we had a good 10 minute chat, I told her a couple good jokes and told her it's not her fault, it's a one in a million accident. She called again in a couple days and told me the adapter is on it's way. Yesterday, the Shanghai center called me and told me it should be here latest tomorrow. So they do follow up. That's what I called good customer service. You can try to make a good product, but they do break and if it's a mass over produced electronic thing, it's worth it for a company like Sony to replace the unit entirely just to keep customer loyalty. I had a lot of Sony products, at least 3 'unbreakable' yellow sports walkman, md players, speakers, cd players, you name it. They were generally very well made and they did deserve their reputation. But times and technology change and so do people's buying habits. Now, we need ease of use and multiple functions built into a device. Like some people mentioned, a dictionary/translater on an Android/iPhone/iTouch is priceless. For me is the ability to write out Chinese characters instead of using pinyin of which I'm clueless on the iPad. Sony had so many diversified interests from music to plasma, memory chips to semiconductors maybe it's hard for them to focus on the end user experience. We're past the age of buttons, they were still kinda cool in '91, but we're gradually getting used to touch interfaces now and I think it could be the way forward. I'll miss my keyboard's and ancient Nokia's tactile feedback but I can see reduced manufacturing and post consumer waste in the near future by going to touch based ui. Back a few months ago, Gizmodo did a series of what's wrong with Sony and how they could have changed and still have a chance to change. Yeah, Sony, we kinda miss you and if you make nice products again, I might give up my fruit themed hardware, but until then, gunbatte kudasai.

What an absolute idiotic comment that is! Are you seriously suggesting that America has contributed more than the ancient Romans/Greeks, and closer to date, the Chinese, Dutch, Spanish, Portuguese, French and British, to name a few. The way our society runs today was pretty much orchestrated by these countries. E.g. The Dutch created the banking system as we know it today, along with the first publicly traded shares of the Dutch Indian Trading Company. Don't even consider comparing America to the Britain in the way it managed to ascertain it's authority under it's empire.

With the exception to some of the excellent products to come out of Silicon valley, I'm struggling to find anything that America does exceptionally well, bar being a hypocrite! #

I'm talking current era, as in the last few decades or so. The article deals with the present, not ancient history. For one thing, without the US, we won't be arguing this on the internet. I'm not saying they only contributed positively, that's why I said both good and bad, eg. Vietnam War, Hiroshima, Agent Orange, the CIA etc etc. I'm not daft, ya know, there's 2 sides to a coin. And don't insult me again online. If you like to, set up a time and place and do it in person. It's easy to be brave behind a monitor and keyboard.

America will pull through like she did before. As much as I 'hate' the US, that country has contributed more, both good and bad than most countries on the planet put together, to the world. If America goes, it won't bode well for the rest of us, believe me. As many crazy, greedy idiots there are in the US, there are also almost an equal amount of decent people who care enough and want to make a positive change to the world, environment, social condition etc. It's their government that's the problem, not the people.

If it was a Yakuza grow-op, the cops would not come near it with a fireman's ladder. And correct me if I'm wrong. According to popular rumors, Hokkaido is full of the good green stuff. Why is this man growing? That's like bringing sand to the beach.

@Branded "A "chunk" ytou say ? Is that how you'd describe China's 1.3 trillion gdp to Americas "14 trillion" ??? And those were 2009 figures- when the global economy had all but froze up ! As for the rest of your post- petty attempt at America bashing. Like China doesn't have pollution problems ? Home to 12 of the 20 dirtiest cities on the planet. Nuclear armed North Korea in their backyard, a disenfranchised work force, an economy that could swing either way- depending on how much the yuan is allowed to freely flow, an under current of social angst brought on by communist ideologies... I could go on, but I won't. I"ll just tip my hat to the chinese for passing up Japan in record time- now the rest of Japan and it's inhabitants must chew on the fat of reality... China is #1 in Asia."

Won't disagree too much with you there. But I wasn't to 'bash 'merica', so quit twisting your panties into a bunch there.

If I was a mixed race, I'll be pretty pissed off if I was called a hafu, wtf is that supposed to mean, half full glass or half empty glass? Hafu load of bricks? Hafu is degradatory and it conjures up words like half-caste, half-breed which are not good words in the English language. Dabaru sounds obese and full of cholesterol choking bad things that is bad for your heart and arteries. I suggest the name 'combi', 'kombi', or 'combo' for combination of 2 or more races. My 2 yen.
