i not so sure this was a 'we don't like america vote.'
it makes sense to give south america a turn. obama should have seen that possibility coming. brazil is a emerging as a major player. why not have the olympics there? it makes perfect sense.
obama just looks a bit bush league. that's all. it wouldn't be a big deal if he wasn't already looking bush league in oh so many ways.

i was being sarcastic.
i don't like hearing people call the US a racist country. are there race issue in the US? of course. but how many other countries have elected minority leaders? what will it take to get the accusation of a racist nation off the tongues (finger tips) of all this critics?
brazil may be a great country. and i'm sure rio is a great city. i have family who have lived down there for decades. i know a little bit about brazil. the good, the bad and the ugly.

i read toyota has recalled millions of floor mats because of this issue.
it's funny how people here always want to pass judgement on the victims. i'd hate to be married to you all. i can hear it now...'i told you so...how could you be so stupid...if you had only listened to me'..etc.

thank you tekiru. that was a very insightful post. you raise some very interesting questions.
emotions run high when we see a parent arrested for simply trying to be with his own child.
it's an especially sensitive issue for those of us living in japan with children.
if indeed the courts/lawyers screwed this up i hope it can be fixed without destroying these lives.

wow where did you get all that? did you read the transcript of the case?
what is the use of speculating? we don't know what the court based their decision on. do we? on top of that your speculations are based on a false premise. i read she was actually given custody of the kids by the hicktown courts. having your facts are wrong doesn't lend much credence to you speculations. they only gave him full custody after she broke the law. from an american perspective that is the key to the case. she signed off on a court agreement then broke it.
i agree it looks as if she was getting the short end of the stick. he probably did use and abuse her. but you know someone is always getting the short end of the stick. and the courts deal with that fact everyday. my understanding is these agreements are always being modified by the court to help parents meet changing life situations, new jobs etc. did she try to work with the court? or did she she see a quick fix for her problem? i won't speculate.
sadly it seems respecting the US courts is not a high priority for the Japanese government. if cases like this one catch on emotionally in the states there will be a price to pay. that's politics.

you are right. it sounds like he screwed her over. but then again we don't really know, do we?
besides, that is not really the point. is it?
it may have been an error on her part but she did go through the american court system. she even won custody of the kids. she agreed to the terms, right? i'm certain she had to sign an agreement with the court. she was bound to that agreement.
if she was unhappy she should have tried to work something out, legally. instead she broke her agreement with the court. it seems to me the father was acting with the backing of the US. he now has sole custody of his kids. she may have changed her mind but the US courts don't let you have 'take backs.'
now it comes down to whether the japanese government will honor the US courts or not.
unfortunately it seems from all i've read they won't.

i'm with you on this but i think your being a little unrealistic. there is no way obama wants to raise this issue to the level of an international crisis. i think the state dept. will be haggled over this behind the scenes. no grand standing.
on the other hand i think the congress would be better vehicle for putting pressure on. that proposed bill might be enough of a wake up call to get japan's attention. it would be mostly symbolic, let's face it the US won't be changing it's national security policy over this. but a bill cutting some program somewhere might be enough of a message.

i think the cops were justified in arresting the guy. they can't be expected to untangle this mess on the spot. this is beyond their pay scale. it really is an international treaty issue.
all this back and forth defending/attacking the players is pointless. this is not about which player was right or wrong. it's about japan participating in an international treaty agreement or not.
i think us citizens should be outraged that our ally could so boldly dismiss our rights and laws. this is an interesting challenge for the two new governments to solve.

actually he was booed at the state of the union address. but hey bush was not a cry baby. (neither is obama to his credit) but the Dumbs sure are.
and another thing. who do these Repugs think they are? having protests, marches, civil actions, shouting out demands, making all sorts of accusations against their government. it has to be stopped. who do they think they are Dumbs? no way man. they are not Dumbs. it's just not fair. boo hoo. it's tearing the country apart. boo hoo. can't obama arrest them or something? at least arrest rush. please.

calling the president a liar! my god what has the country come to!? didn't the Repugs learn anything about civility and respect watching how the Dumbs behavior while bush was in office?
i think the Repugs should do better, they should treat obama as bush was treated.
