I don't think its just one thing such as selfishness. Life just gets overwhelming, and at that age, a person doesn't think logically about the consequences. Maybe he/she's thinking, "I'll do this, because life has become unbearable;" but why couldn't/can't they think of an alternative action that would also prolong their lives and give them a chance to see a brighter picture than at present? That is the question. I think the 13 year old stage has a lot to do with bullying, pushing, peer presure etc. But now that modern internet instant information system has evolved, kids learn too much about well, just about anything they want to. Remembering back to my teen years, about the ages between 16-18 were the danger period and recreational drugs were rampant in high schools. A star athlete, baseball and basketball player, first team at a very prestigious school got a scholarship to a small college, and perhaps out of lonelieness indulged in his penchant for drugs to his demise. He died at 18.5. I visited his parents within a year, and they were just the most decent, respectable, crushed to the heart people you'd ever could have met. I'm sure its like that for all suicide related families.

Hey Mark, what a cynic! I highly doubt O'Barry is making a killing in making money, on the scale the hunters are with the dophins. Ever hear of doing something out of your deep personal beliefs? If the man loves dolphins for over 50 years, wouldn't you think he might feel something averse to a story like The Cove without being driven by thought of financial gain for himself? I think you strike out completely on this point.

Its nice to have a fashionable pair of wear like this (for 5,670 yen.) But if the girls really want to shape up, take 30-minutes to an hour a day and go out walking. The brisk, commando style posture of this models will suffice as a good style to follow. Then give yourself 30-60 days of such a regimen, and you might even save yourself money. After 2 months, you may not even need the size you originally thought you would buy before starting the regimen.

I find nothing "surprising" anymore. Its a very obvious "sign of the times". People in this country, especially younger people who don't have much experience with society, or had any chance to develop proper hobbies (lack of space, money and time) become dimwits. I'm afraid there are close to a million or more such young people these days. Japan has some serious house to tend to make the "beautiful Japan" concept imagined by loose bowels.

What a dress. I'm not quite sure why she's standing in front of all that whiskey? Oh, its the sponsor, I see. I'd like to see Norika Fujiwara in this dress.

Its obvious that Cain and Able will never resolve the issues. That's why we still need laws and abide by them. From the above, I can see that the two countries involved would get into a dog fight right away, if there was any chance. The German people repented, reflected and changed and are a much better off for having covered the whole 9 yards of it with continuous diligence to not let such a bizarre mentality exercise control over them forever more. And how about Japan?

You said it. I watched some very disturbing videos on You tube and if they are original filming, its such a crock that it makes you really doubt the WC conclusions. Looked like a whole team and them some were behind it.

Tomtokyo, nice work if you can get it (and be helped by connections from back home and live the high life you profess, but you ain't my role model or necessarily worthy of respect just because you can live the high life here. "Expat losers?" Is that how you want to address the 99% rest of us who came here for reasons besides the economy if you could fathom that, which I doubt. The problem with Mr. James is that its promoting BIG MAC and its doing so in an outdated way. Black Sambo anyone? Happy Bob, the character that made fun of Japanese in the dailies 15 years ago till his one liners became down right, RIGHT ON, and too directly painfully true, and was henceforth withdrawn forever more. Personally, I didn't get offended by James because I to feel secure with who I am, what I do with my life, and what values I try to uphold in whatever culture, country I reside. But to have this character in 2009, is simply VERY OUTDATED, and both the ad company who created it (Japanese domestic company) AND Big Mac should know better. as in period. Still it doesn't surprise me when I see many very still derogatory, blatant commercials on the trains with people of non-white expressions. Did you see the Coca-Cola commericial recently with the African UN rep. (big, fat, and none too intelligent looking mind you) drinking the juice and then making an exaggerated expression, then laughing stupidly when he finally gets the Japanese UN rep (dressed impeccably in grey designer suit). Its very marginal whether this should go unaccounted for also, I believe. Hello Debito, you've seen that one on the Yamanote line, haven't you?

"We need more people like Mr James in our lives - good-hearted, smiling, encouraging and well-dressed with nice manners." This comment is a joke and a double standard. You can't live here for long without being dramatically pushed up against the hard reality of space, expenses, and total disregard of your "equality" or "acceptability", normal things. How about expecting the natives to be "good-hearted, smiling, encouraging and well-dressed with nice manners?" Because it can't be done. Too many miserable people get in the way and try to push you aside and ignore you. Its a survival of the fittest, pure and simple.

Denying that bullying exists BIGTIME in this country, and at all age groups till the end is just burying your head in a keg of nuka.

I think you're all giving DJP too much credit. Let's remember, this is Japan. Hatoyama and Ozawa (and Makiko Tanaka etc.) were once strong members of the LDP. They just couldn't get high enough positions so they branched out. If you go to the country side of Japan you'll see. A country, with large spaces of land, and nothing, absolutely nothing on it except for farm land, pachinko parlors, and golf courses. Libraries? Homes and properties for the aged? (a crummy dormitory here and there). Everybody jumped from the war to export machine with little thought for building a "Beautiful Japan." Until stomach ache Abe-san came and left. I don't think ANY gov't style will help Japanese people and more or less. They have to determine what kind of country they want, and stand up for it. Not only with a change from LDP to DJP. But maybe its a start. See you in about 50 years, in the land of our children and grandchildren. Do you think Japan will be much different from today? Heavily dependent on the big cities and little development for the countrysides? Me thinks not.

I don't get al this hate mail towards Debito. Why shouldn't the guy be allowed to air his opinions and take actions where he deems appropriate, just because they may differ from your own? Its a free society, and he once in a while makes a good point. Beware of burying your collective head in the sand, just because you find this society refreshing in the beginning. In time, you might start to thank a guy like Debito for his diligence.

Woooo, wait a minute. Why did "white people" have to be dragged into this? Why don't you just refer to them/us as "anglos." And I don't agree. Half to me sounds predjudice. I've been here since before the term was used and when it was introduced, I didn't like the sound. But the recent fiasco of the African female runner who wins the race and is questioned as to really being a female or not, gives another possible meaning to the word "half." What do you think?
