Yes this may be a non-story, but so far 50 blog-ins have appeared so it must strike a chord. I think the bigger question here is, a married couple riding bicycles at night (one without a light) with chocolate in their basket THINK OF THEMSELVES as just riding around Mayberry with Andy and Barney the cops taking care of business, which is nothing more than locking up the town drunk or double parking etc. In other words, we as gaijin feel we are already up against enough restrictions in the daily social life etc. and what's a little red light crossing anyways? But the environment (of the world) has drastically changed since 2001, the 2016 Olympics are in the picture, drugs are proliferating, out-of-work people now in the majority, and overall doom and gloom written all over the place. Against this RECENT background, the police did what they thought was their job, to the best of their ability. Still, some parts of what lodomi says I can relate to. Its definitely a STACKED DECK. But we live here FULL KNOWING That to be the case. So, after all. Stop on REd. Look both ways before ANY CROSSING, SIGNAL OR NOT, and especially stopping at little lodge roads where you might be living, because the natives ride their bikes against traffic all the time, and I doubt they've ever been stopped about it. THAT is a double standard though, don't you think? And that's the bottom line. Is it a double standard? Unequivacably it is. So? We stay and endure it or we take flight? Sorry to be so blunt, but that's the long and short of living here, or so I conceive. How about others?

all I've ever had to do is give them one of my looks, and they leave me alone, heh. Sarge, what do you mean by "one of my looks"?

We all know everything about this story and more.Learning and following the laws of the roda here are quite a chore, but a necessary one, because the J-cops ARE ALWAYS RIGHT. So when they approach you (and me) about it, that's because you (me) have made some violation. I've been stopped and ticketed 3-4 times in 10 years. And once was bated by a rookie cop who wanted to and DID make his point of showing who was the boss. That's all there's too it. As long as we live here (and why else would we be writing about it) we have to realize that we either obey or we attract attention like a magnet. Then anything goes. Remember, this is the country that still places great emphasis on arrest by confession.

We all live here right? I live in first floor 40-year old wooden apt. Not only are my bedroom windows open, but every xxx window in my 2LDK is wide open, otherwise I suffocate. I hate using "air-conditioning " which just gives me a sore throat and makes me naucious. Welcome to summertime in Tokyo. That's why she doesn't lock the windows on the 2nd floor. I'm surprised readers don't know that!

Let's see. They get raped if they work in the Green Car, if they subscribe to a newspaper and if they live on the 1st or 2nd floor. I used to wonder why J-girls walk around so often looking miserable. Must be some connection to the opportunities they don't have and being taken hostage by the J-guys who don't have any sense of ...what's the word?

Welcome to the "real world"of trains here in Tokyo. At least times have changed, though the Odakyu train seems to be more of the same. I remember more than a decade ago, seeing a young guy pretend to be sleeping while sitting down and leaning into the stacked young lady sitting next to him with one hand purposefully resting on the adjacent customers prolific parts. She for her part just chose to ignore it! I couldn't believe my eyes as the Akihabara geek looking type guy faded into her chest over and over, while pretending to be dousing off each time he'd get a feel.

Its a simple act of being bored. There's absolutely nothing for them to do to enjoy themselves, no jobs to improve themselves and almost no hope for any future beyond having kids. Now whose fault is this? LDP/DPJ or the society as a whole?

One day i was riding in the local train line I live on, narry a foreigner do I see. But one day there was a group of brightly dressed, talkative French people carrying on like they were in Paris. The Japanese sitting quietly and French buzzing right along. At first I was deligthed. Then after 5 minutes I wish they'd tone it down. Everything in balance as they say.

A line drive is when the baseball leaves the bat like a smash in tennis, no lob or curve to its trajectory. It travels straight, fast and in this case about neck high, which is relatively low in the scenerio of possible trajectories and is correspondingly extremely painful when it hits a body directly.

I remember after the WBC alot of people here gave me heat as to why American doesn't take the event more seriously and send a better team? I tried explaining they didn't want to risk injury by speeding up training before the long season ahead. Looks like there is something to that argument after all.

Gotta love the contrast and positioning of the red and black colored outfit. She's looking better and better with each transformation. Wasn't she in the news last week giving elementary school kids advise against not using drugs?

I agree with Azrael and dishdash. WWII movies about Japan are all too rare compared to the ones about Germans. But feelings of animosity towards the Japanese still live on and can only be helped by movies like this and others. And what a beauty Takaoka san is, no?!

If you have a destination like a golf course, and 3-4 to play together, the car pull routine is a very familiiar way to do it.Being on the recipient end of things, I'm always sure to chip in on gas, tolls, and buy the driver a coffee or snack on the way to and fro. For years (about 10), I ran a catering business and drove all around Tokyo, Saitama, Chiba, and that was before the days of Navitime! I learned by my mistakes, but I learned quickly that "driving defensively" was the only sane mode. Anything on the aggressive end and trouble awaited soon and bigtime. That being said, I wonder how this type of commentary got its way into the news to begin with? I'd love to see someone write a commentary titled "Why I hate smoking (places) in Japan." Will such a topic ever be addressed properly, and without fear and favor? I sure hope so, and soon!

Bushlover, Are you referring to the comment of "Nappy headed ho's"? By the shock jock, I forget his name, but it wasn't a simple, naive slur, but one that crossed the line, for which he was heartily disciplined. They were the championship team at the time.

All people, of all colors and genders have predjudice thoughts in our inner and outer minds. Its just a matter of how we control ourselves or not.

Talked with a retired police investigator about this. He says, its far from being an isolated case, and that literally thousands of Japanese families face a very similar situation. Affordable care for the elderly is not in place. Would someone in the Diet actually start doing something for the people for a change? Problems such as this one is just raising its head, and along with suicide is going to only get worse. Its on the verge of an epidemic. Wake up!
