Cheers to Kanagawa for having the stones to get this ordinance passed. Now if only Tokyo could follow suit. Unfortunately, outside of Chiyoda Ward (why could they along succeed?) and only on the streets, not in the restaurants etc. Tokyo is still smokers heaven.....much to my lungs chagrin.

I'm afraid the convenience factor of this society has gone to extremes in this case, but not only this case. Its a very wierd dichotomy that is happening in this society, the good with the really bad. The caring with the really zombied out population. But after all the good and bad is reported, is it in the end just like any other country or not? Not only different, that we will all agree on, but does the good outweigh the bad in Japan? Obviously or else we wouldn't stay......?

A very sad day, and a horrific piece of news. Wipes Oshio's disaster right off the page, almost. Thank your lucky stars to be born with more wits than these sad, chronic , unfortunate losers.

Do what you can. You means J-people in position to do it. There's NO reason to be standing (yes standing, anyone sitting these days?) on the train, holding onto a strap for dear life, and having one of those smutty magazines with 15 plus/minus girls staring the elementary school/jr.high/school boys in the face for the duration of the daily rides, while the girls sit there like ducks in a pond. It won't cure the problem, but anybody for standing up to maybe think about a way to stop perpetuating it? Like it doesn't exist? Like so many other things.

yosun-This fish-throw guy looks more like Japanese than Chinese/Taiwanese! I suspect he is an anti-whale catching activist to protest there~ The red hat old guy behind him is absolutely another Japanese~ LOL

These two guys are as Chinese/Taiwanese as the sun. Your comment is in error.

CoolCali, you da man! Next time just keep the off the butts entirely. Or try putting out the butt on your butt and see if that's as painless as a callussed hand. I doubt it. Your second hand smoke offends, but this must be the 5th time to start that debate that tkoind2 and smithinjapan will eloquently come to the fore on, so I'll stop here.

. There is more smut printed, color smut with elementary/jr. sr. high school girls in gradually more compromising poses on most any train we ride here in Tokyo. WHY?! Start there, pass a law. No more smutty photo'd magazines with compromising poses on the trains. Go on the the Kiosks. Then the convenient stores. Its so xxx xxx obvious what steps to take, but NO ONE TAKES THEM. NOT Kan, NOt Hatoyama, NOt Ozawa, none of them. WhY? Tell me that. Don't they have daughters or female children in their extended families? Its down right embarrassing, don't you think?

"Of course, he would not commit suicide. To the end he believed that what he did was right".....As do a great majority of J-people since then and nowadays too.

Why didn't she just kill herself first! "Tries to kill herself". What bad joke. Adept at murdering 2-innocent children (her own nonetheless), but not capable of offing herself. Sounds way too bizzar. Is there any scenerio that can be envisioned here? And why didn't the woman die? Because her self-inflicted wounds weren't made with enough conviction?

In less than a decade, a mosque is being built (proposed) on the very sight of the attack. Unimaginable in any other country except the USA....showing the depth to which freedom is defended in that society. The Q controversy guy is at the other spectrum, and that kind of kook exists in every nation ad nauseum.

Oyatoi says it well, good and bad that it is. The other day, Kaori Shoji, Japanese writer said that Japanese ladies have endured 1000 years of poverty, so someone like Julia Childs (eternally wealthy, successful) doesn't appeal to most J-ladies. It made me think. 1000 years of poverty, 30-years of apathy.hmmm But concerning the education proposed by dolphgirl, I think its going to take ALOT more than that. Say about 1000 times more. I agree that J-people raise their children beautifully tilll.....school age. And then the mess begins. Indoctrination, groupism (already enough from the crib to 5), anti-foreignerism, anti- you name it. I remember how enamored I was of J-education/culture before I came here and saw it face to face. Sure they used to be good at math etc. but now? And past that? Still oyatoi's final comment, that Japan is a society that will endure long after others succumb is pretty believable.

I'm afraid I have to agree with Kkumanopooh. 50-50 or not? USA is always a gaming target, and the attackers always have ample reasoning to criticize US. But if you think that's cute and righteous etc. think again because what goes around comes around. I ain't burning nothing this week, but sooner or later, this type of action (writing Satanic Verses, buring Quran's etc.) is bound to happen if the crazies of Iran, including their "leaders" keep cheap talking the USA and any other countries it tends to differ with. Not much different than N.Korea problem, but more people to deal with in conflict.

Of course its poor action, but can you blame the dude? I mean, who started this. And why not be able to say a word or two against the blasphemous things done in the name of _______. Today's paper shows a woman getting lashed and potentially stoned to death because of some crazy reason according to the Q. Can anybody in their right mind agree to this behavior? The LAW? Glad I write under an alias, or I'd be looking over my shoulder worrying about retribution. And that is about the only thing I respect about this crazy guy, he's saying "I ain't backing down out of fear of getting terrorized."

Lumping the titled issues together is very unfair to acupuncture. I've received rather significant relief from neck, back problems over the years from Acupuncture administered by a great practitioner whose spent the majority of his life at it, as did his father before him. The history is more than 1000 years I believe. My brother, a trained physcian gets angry at me each time I mention it. "It only works because you believe in it." I grew up in a family of Western physicians and as youngest sibling went of things like Oriental Medicine and brown rice, miso soup, etc. Go figure. But after many years, I still feel I've gained a great deal in my oddessey studying and practicing "Things Japanese".

People, the girl is 24-5. I know we were/are all genius's and fashion tops at that age, but again let's cut the girl some slack. I haven't followed any of her history till now, so I don't know except for a quick look at yahoo page, but for whatever number of other reasons, the energetic feeling she exhibits on this hot as hadies day somehow picked me up. And I thank you!

ij, those long gloves are the J-way to prevent excess sun exposure, they are trying to keep their skins white/light, which is looked on as beautiful, even among mainstream J-society. Say what you will about J-fashion, but they do hae some good ideas (though unorthodox) about health. The sun umbrella for example, or drinking green tea and eating tofu instead of cola and ice cream. Whale instead of hamburger (the latter being a joke). O.K.?
