Japan does pay parents a monthly stipend. It isn't huge, but enough to pay for a sitter a couple times a month.
Not sure where you're going with that one. Odd association.

Its harder to take action against the perpetrator than you might think. Speaking as the husband of a woman groped, I'm glad the one got caught and felt compelled to admit his other transgressions. My wife is normally vocal and strong-willed, but felt so shocked by the act of being inappropriately touched that she couldn't react quickly. And then the guy was gone. Now she carries a wee pepper-spray bottle. I hope she has the composure to use it.

According to the CIA factbook, Japan's defense budget is the 5th largest in the world. While they might not be battle hardened, neither are the NK forces, and they are very well equipped relatively speaking. If there is any country in the world I'd be worried about re-militarizing, it'd be Japan.

Excellent. How did we get along all those previous millennia without kids having cell phones? Cell phones are extremely distracting even to adults, so imagine how difficult it would be to manage 20 cell phone wielding kids in a classroom.

Grown men don't have sleep-overs with children. Fathers don't dangle their babied from balconies. Its up to someone else to decide now.

If we look at the outcome of Japanese parenting, rather than anecdotal observations, maybe we'll come to a different conclusion. Japanese people are gentle, hard working, respectful, humble, polite, and highly social. Its parenting that instills these values.

There is no such thing as "forced suicide". Its murder, committed by the ultimate coward.

Pixel-count races are a prime example of marketing based on meaningless specs rather than actual usability. With increasing pixel-count, comes increased pixel density, and increased sensor noise. If not managed well, this means that your newer camera with "more megapixels" will take a lower quality image than the previous generation. There are many examples of this phenomenon in the marketplace, both with cell phones and dedicated cameras. Besides, with a "lens" the size of a head of a push-pin, you're never going to get much of an image.

Japanese keitai suffer from the same development blunders as many Japanese tech products: They simply continue to push a spec race, while ignoring what consumers really want/need/lust. Various keitai are marketed as "high spec", without considering usability. For example, the user interface of Japanese keitai are archaic when compared to the iPhone, blackberry, or Palm Pre. Or they are marketed based on their case design, again ignoring actual device usability. If Japanese keitai's are so wonderful, why is it that they are not sold outside of Japan? Docomo tried, and it failed miserably. Keitai's only succeed in this local captive market. I suspect that if the Palm Pre is brought to Japan (it'd need some extra network capabilities first), it would really put the local keitai's to shame, especially considering it's got a "real" keyboard which the thumb-wizards of Japan could utilize.

Nice. And the competition is getting better too, which is good for the consumer.

Its for research. A limited controlled study to use existing technical capabilities to try to better understand the propagation of highly contagious illnesses. Its nice to see an existing pervasive technology being used for something beneficial. Turn your big-brother fear mongering down a notch.

inakaRob: be careful...around 1/4 of the training supplements sold in the US have steroids in them. And many have some nasty fillers added. And that point you made about needing 1g of protein per 1lb of body weight, is also wrong. Weight lifting magazines and websites are not the places to look for accurate information. (watch a film called "bigger stronger faster") It'd be funny if we find out that the IV drips in Japan are slipping in a little EXTRA boost. :) A little THC maybe...

For many people, working in a foreign country for a while is a resume builder, not a big risk. It seems strange that this wouldn't also be the case for Japanese. I've never heard of this problem for Japanese who have worked in Germany, France, UK, or US for a few years.
