At least Japan says that students should be taught that there are differing opinions with South Korea over the uninhabited islets but that they are Japan’s territory

Perhaps they approach the situation this way because the koreans are actually controlling and administring the islands?

The basic pieces of info reported about news figures are: name, sex, age, occupation, and place of residence. Nationality if the person is foreign. I see nothing particularly sinister about this.
