Sound, logical, rational thinking. That's why it will never happen in Japan. Because the old folks who are going to be the big drain on social services in the future, along with the agricultural sector, are too closed-minded and control too much of the vote.

Posted in: Swelling numbers of working immigrants would also help expand Japan’s tax rolls—which the country desperately needs to address its unsustainable debt load. Social security and healthcare spending would fall relative to GDP. And the tax burden would spread out over more workers, boosting consumption.

The Blue Samurai had wished to do better than a 4-0 loss to Brazil in a friendly in neutral Poland last October, but instead now have eight defeats with two draws in 10 games against the South Americans

Haven't Japanese teams worn out the "Blue Samurai" name already? Don't see a lot of evidence of the fighting spirit in these teams that the name deserves.

Panasonic and other Japanese companies commonly own cross-shareholding stakes in their suppliers and customers to cement business ties.

Yup, and possibly one of the many reasons Panasonic and other Japanese electronics companies are failing. Instead of investing their capital in R&D and other means to stay more efficient/competitive, they have it tied up in the stock of other companies. Stability has its price.

The draft deletes a guarantee of basic human rights and prescribes duties, such as submission to an undefined “public interest and public order.” The military would be empowered to maintain that “public order.”

Wow. Scary, but, unfortunately not all that surprising. Japan really has screwed up trying to be a democracy -- especially the last 20 years or so -- so it is only natural some folks would want to go back to the system that they believe made Japan "great". Imagine this concept of "public interest and public order' would make it even more challenging for foreigners. Glad I'm not there to worry about such nonsense anymore.

But the latest figures were worse than a previous 120 billion yen loss estimate that Tokyo Electric Power (TEPCO) announced just two months ago

LOL. In just two months their loss grew by a factor of almost 5 -- 520 billion yen. Please, how foolish does TEPCO think the J-public is? Anyone who trusts their numbers about anything is simply a fool.

They fear that blind faith in the central bank’s firepower replaced a cool-headed assessment of economic reality and doubt a monetary shock can shift Japan into higher gear.

Fair concerns. I'd put the odds of Abenomics being the answer to Japan's problems at no better than 20% But given almost three decades now of a sustained lack of growth, and maybe the old "Hail Mary" play was in order.

Unlike many other developed countries, largely mono-ethnic Japan does not have a significant Muslim population, and there is little emphasis in the educational curriculum on cultural sensitivity.

All too true and one of Japan's biggest weaknesses. Very difficult to be a leader in a global world when you still view it as Japan and everyone else. Insularity and arrogance are not great traits to have in the 21st century.

    Yeh, right.

“Islamic countries, the only thing they share in common is Allah and they are fighting with each other, and they have classes.”

Tragic display of Japan's inward focus and total lack of real understanding of the international community, including other countries and religions, even among top officials.

Nope. The storage of contaminated water has been the central issue after the cold shutdown. That's why they've been building underground and outside tanks.

Nigelboy -- and they've been doing such a wonderful job that they've had at least three leaks in the past month or so, and are having to set up a panel to study the problem. Two years into it.

The panel was set up in response to a visit from an International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) inspection team last week. The team said that managing the steady increase of contaminated water would probably be the most challenging task for the plant in the foreseeable future.

So if I have this right, TEPCO has been pooring water on the reactors for two years, but it took a visit by the IAEA to make them realize they might have a problem in disposing of it. Unbelievable. The inmates truly are running the asylum.

Good ! The start of Sony's new rise.

Jozabad -- You might just want to temper that enthusiasm and look at the numbers before you jump on that bandwagon. The article says they sold off over $2.2 billion in real estate, plus a chemical division and their holdings in DeNA, yet they will only have a profit for the year of about $400 million. So their actual operations are losing well over $1.8 billion. Not sure that is the start of a "new rise".

The comparison to the German invasion of Poland in 1939 is ridiculous and typical of the absurd over-exaggerated bias of the Korean anti-Japan crowd.

Ossan -- the only thing absurd is you making the distinction between the two about invasion, rather than simply aggression. The fact that Japan's military superiority was such that it was not required to use force against Korea does not make the pain and suffering inflicted on the people there over the decades of Japanese rule any less real. Do you think the thousands of Korean "comfort women" feel the same way you do? Or how about the hundreds of thousands of Koreans forced to go to Japan as slave laborers to support the war effort? Including working in Aso's family's businesses.

Wow, great day to live in Japan. First three stories on JT are: Abe pledges to use force against China, 168 lawmakers visit Yasakuni, and the IAEA says it will likely take at least four decades to clean up Fukushima. Very glad I'm out.

I disagree, sounds like "the apple doesn't fall too far from the tree". His dad flaunted his mistresses and used his wealth and power to his advantage. His son appears to have just done the same. Except now there are increased protections for women, like anti-stalking laws. Both appear to treat women like commodities, where's the big difference? Which, given that this company sells its products mainly to women, is pretty amazing.

Amazing how well they have succeeded given the protectionist obstacles the J-government put up to protect the Yamata's of the world -- like making it illegal for express companies to own their own fleets of airplanes for domestic use. For sending anything overseas, FedEx is really the best option.
