I disagree, sounds like "the apple doesn't fall too far from the tree". His dad flaunted his mistresses and used his wealth and power to his advantage. His son appears to have just done the same. Except now there are increased protections for women, like anti-stalking laws. Both appear to treat women like commodities, where's the big difference? Which, given that this company sells its products mainly to women, is pretty amazing.

branded -- nice thought, actually lasted about three posts/one hour. Then WilliB felt compelled to regurgitate the conspiracy theory for all of our benefit.

Amazing how well they have succeeded given the protectionist obstacles the J-government put up to protect the Yamata's of the world -- like making it illegal for express companies to own their own fleets of airplanes for domestic use. For sending anything overseas, FedEx is really the best option.

Great came. Saints deserved it. Sean Payton clearly out-coached his counterpart -- the on-side kick to start the second half was brilliant.

Another clear sign that we cannot expect any coverage that does not include Japanese athletes. My guess is this clown could not name even five foreign athletes who'll compete in Vancouver. What's more, the American anchors have been prepping for months for this assignment. This guy was just hired less than two weeks ahead. What a farce.

Hey, where are all you folks claiming all this attention on Toyota is being caused simply by the U.S. government's desire to help the Big 3? Unfortunately, if you bother to read this article, and the numerous other ones out there, you'll see that the Japanese Transportation Ministry ORDERED Toyota to look into the Prius problem first, before even the U.S. Transportation Department. Care to re-think your position? Please, accept the obvious -- Toyota grew too fast, cut some corners, and then, because of the corporate culture, no one had the guts to push management to acknowledge the problems as pro-actively fix them. And, if you don't believe that Toyoda-san's becoming head a few months ago was a coincidence to these problems -- think again. They knew the sh*t was going to hit the fan, so they put the only guy in place who has the clout to clean-up the mess and change the corporate culture.

Branded -- absolutely. Toyota gets about 40% of its profit from the U.S. If they were not smart enough to protect that business when the gas pedal issue first arose in 2007, then they should get what they deserve. Respectfully, the Transportation Deparment in the U.S. acts totally differently than the one here. Here, the transport ministry basically works to protect Toyota and Japan Inc. In the U.S., they work to protect the consumer/citizen. If Japan is so myopic/dense that they have not figured that out in all these years, then they deserve to fail.

I know men in Japan don't give presents on Valentines Day, but neither of these two would make me rush right out to buy chocolates. But, then again, I'm way past senior high school.

Apsara -- thanks for stating the obvious. I know what "de" is in Japanese. What I was referring to was its silly use here in Japan in many names of shops, restaurants, etc. to give it a phony French sound -- like "Salon de Nails". But, I guess you missed that.

olsmonkey/lovejapan21/bamboohat -- you cannot be serious with that nonsense? The J-authorities, and puppy-dog press, basically put Schindler out of business here because of a single accident, and reveled in publicly humiliating Citi Bank several years ago over a minor infraction (conveniently while the big banks here were struggling, and you have the gall to accuse the U.S. of doing the same. Please, stop blindly reacting and actually start educating yourself. Even NHK is now questioning Toyota's trustworthiness given the problems now developing on the Prius braking system -- which they noted are ALL made in Japan. The fact is that Toyota knew about the sudden acceleration issues as far back as 2007, and at least 19 Americans have been killed in accidents due to this problem since then. If Japan had a right to made a big stink about the one tragic death that occurred due to the Schindler problems, the U.S. certainly has a right to do the same with 19 deaths and Toyota.

Hopefully Chibana will learn enough French to teach NHK a proper sounding title for the show. What is this "de" thing anyway? It just gets stuffed in between Japanese words in order to make the title sound French.

This article makes me even more depressed about Japan's future. If the new hires are that scared of even answering a phone because of the potential to receive "demerits", then how in the world will the out-of-the-box thinking that Japan needs to remain globally competitive ever happen? Japan can only compete by constantly bringing new/breakthrough ideas to market. Yet the next generation of managers pees its pants over simply answering a phone. Scary.

I am always amazed at how few Japanese people, particularly those over 30 or so, wear sunglasses. Young folks wear them, for fashion mostly, but most older folks don't. Haven't J-folks become aware of the dangers of UV rays to the eyes -- namely cataracts. Women cover their entire bodies to protect their skin here, but msot people still squint or try to shadow their faces with their hands, rather than wear sunglasses. I wear them 12 months a year.

Ossan -- Apsara is right, your post is, as usual, based on your perceptions of reality, influenced no doubt from watching too much U.S. prime-time TV, and not the facts. Sure, joint custody arrangements have problems, but to say that they are not a better alternative than basically pretending that your father is "dead", is foolish. And, yes, I do speak from experience. My wife and I divorced in the states over ten years ago, and she had "residential custody" of the kids initially. And, yes, I made mistakes in dealing with that situation, which certainly caused my kids some pain, which I wish I could somehow undue. But I never stopped trying to be a dad to the kids, and they knew that. As a result, I ended up being a single dad to two of them when they decided they wanted to come live with me. They are both now college-educated and happy in their adult lives. And that never would have happened if I had been cut off from them.

tkoind2 -- good posts. Anyone who thought this panel was going to reach any concensus on the most emotional issues, like Nanking, was way too optimistic. The Chinese panel members could not possibly deveate from official government policy, and the J-historians were also not going to contadict 50+ years of LDP-led propaganda. Especially since many of them had been teaching it. But I do think that even the J-sides' willingness to agree to the "aggression" wording was something positive.

Is the team sponsorless or is the plain white on the car and the drivers intentional? I can't imagine that is the case, since the sponsors want the exposure these kinds of shots get.
